First time reading Buzz, and I want to elect him president. The man knows exactly what is wrong with the US (and only the US)… a preoccupation with sports. If we just end this, all of our ills will be washed away. I’m also surprised that he is the first person to figure out that college football has no impact on general alumni involvement, charitable contributions to the university itself, national exposure, or campus morale.

[Pause for readers to look up the definition of sarcasm]

By the way, in no way do I think this was curmudgeoning for curmudgeoning’s sake. This was most definitely curmudgeoning for getting published in the New York Times’ sake.

How come Holly never posts anything about the irony of Phil Fulmer talking about the importance of his players having character? I thoroughly embrace the thuggishness of my alma mater, and have for years. What is about Saban she hates so vehemently? The...fact that he coaches Alabama? Since when is that not enough? To set on your ass and complain about something you have neither participated in nor will ever understand is about as productive as pissing in the wind. You can take a look at just about any activity we as a people enjoy and find something to bitch about. Someone needs to introduce this guy to a porn site and teach him the art of tailgate power drinking so he can loosen up a bit. Reminds me of an argument Woody Hayes ended quickly when he was the OSU coach…..for those that don’t know, Woody was also an associate professor and a huge history buff…..I believe he taught US History 101 or something like that.

Anyways, one of the professors was complaining to him about how much emphasis the football team got and how much Woody and his assistants got paid- and Woody said to him, “Remember, sir, that I can do your job, but you cannot do mine.”

I remember when I first read “Friday Nights Lights” based on the over-the-moon recommendation of a friend. This was before the movie, obviously before the TV show.

And I hated it. Too obvious, too melodramatic, too much shoehorned politics – and my reaction to the book was not met with high regard.

Well, after all these years, dammit, I was right. Anything that man creates is by nature unlikable.

Lets get real – what else could the NYT say without angering their “average” reader. They all know we’re ignorant, violent morons out here in fly-over country, a perpetuation of the smug hypocritical mindset that Randy Newman pegged perfectly 30+ years ago in “Rednecks”.

I’d like to cut off the food supply to Manhattan for 3 days, and beforehand close the bridges, roads & tunnels and see who’s more civilized.
