WE BALLIN’, BABY. IT’S A SHAME.
We here at EDSBS would like to say that officially we are appalled by the demolition of the wall separating amateur sport and professional. The increasing sickness and greed surrounding college football disgust those of us who still recall the original spirit of collegiate athletics: the elevation and growth of the individual through physical effort in a team environment, the aspiration to the Greek ideal of honing both the mind and body for the unyielding rigors of life. It’s a kind of tragedy, but not the real tragedy of tragedies in the SEC’s impending megadeal with ESPN for all the SEC games not taken first by CBS Sports on fall Saturdays.

It’s a total tragedy. Pass the champagne, please.
The real tragedy: ESPN’s $2.25 billion buy-in for the SEC starting next year is not the dissolution of the borders separating college athletics–that was obliterated long ago, especially at the D-1 level where teams function as the de facto professional team for their geodemographic. The saddest part will be the loss of the three Daves, who first earned your derision, then your affection, and then finally your sarcasm-tinged but unending love in broadcasting the side-meat games of the SEC on Raycom Sports, formerly known to the O.G.s among us as JP, or Jefferson Pilot.
Gone in name first, and now gone. The upside: part of the deal with ESPN involves getting Comcast to put ESPNU on basic cable, a huge feat given Comcast’s willingness to go into multi-year grappling matches over its basic lineup.
Oh, and as Inside the Sprawl reminds you: we’re rich, bitch. It’s shameful. And awesome. Shawemesome. Kind of all of these things at the same time, actually. We’ll weep as we dive into at our buckets of money. Depth: 90 feet and counting.

This seems as appropriate a post as any to ask the EDSBS community about ESPN360.
Yesterday I went to sign up for the Gameplan online because, as Orson pointed out in a podcast recently, the online version archives the games and just rocks. Apparently the online version isn’t offered anymore and is replaced by ESPN360, which if I’m reading correctly, contains all the Gameplan games plus the regular ESPN and Deuce games FOR FREE! Can that be right? Anyone tried this yet?
Of course, I can’t get it with my shitty cable company, so I’m stuck paying $109 for the Gameplan with no archiving

As an LSU fan who, much like a vampire, cannot stand the thought of attending a day game, this is a great deal. “JP Game” is a four letter word in Baton Rouge. I am sure ESPN will keep that shitty 11:30 AM time slot alive, but hopefully now that they will be broadcasting more SEC games, they will understand that certain teams should only be viewed at night if you want to get those golden camera moments of drunken fans coated in body paint & vomiting on themselves. All a “JP Game” can do for you is guarantee the stadium will be two-thirds full.

With this acquisition, the WWL is more or less mandating that we CFB junkies will have to purchase Gameplan. At least those of us who setup the tv on top of the other tv every saturday morning will have to.
My biggest concern is that the WWL still has contractual ties to the Big Televen that will have to be honored, so all this means is that there won’t be a noon game on CBS. Phooey.

Actually, you should thank Jim Delaney and the Big Ten Network as they pretty much scared the WWL into helicopter dumping 2.25B on the SEC. The last thing the WWL wanted was another conference network taking coveted product off the market. I’m sure you’ll get right on that thank you card.

JD4AU @32: Hell some of us are so ancient we remember back when there was a total of ONE college football game on TV per week on ABC. And teams were limited in the appearences they could make each season. So when USC played a top OOC game like Alabama or Oklahoma the network would have to drop the game against UCLA or Notre Dame.
SKLM @ 19: No jealousy from this USC fan. It has been a long time since a USC game was not on TV in SoCal.

blon57 – As for the Big 10 and Big 12 renaming themselves “Inadequate” and “Substandard” conferences….I beg to differ. The Big 12 is strong and should have no shame. They could call themselves the “Almost-as-fast-as-the-ESS-EEE-SEE-Conference” if they wanted to, but Big 12 fits better on a t-shirt.
The Big 10……carry on with the renaming. Both of your suggestions were appropriate.
