#38- Well, color me unimpressed re: TAH-NOO-TAH, as usual his defenses are overrated, GT finished 58th in pass efficiency D last season, despite facing the worst collection of QB talent ever in a major conference in the ACC, and also getting Notre Dame on the OOC slate, the worst offense in CFB.

And the VT game? Maybe he was good in the 2nd half, he finished 9/21 for 129 yards with a TD and an INT, so unless he was 0/21 and an INT in the 1st, his 2nd half couldn't have been awesome.

Now, the intangibles such as "being a winner", maybe that's true, just hard to assume for a guy who was 56th in pass efficiency last season, and whose schedule gets harder this season.

If we can trust Wiki, then the SEC plays an equal or better counterpart in ALL of its bowl games. Two out of seven matchups are guaranteed higher finishers in the other conference. One is a guaranteed #2 vs. #2. The other four reqire the lowest possible SEC pick and the highest possible opponent pick to have an "even" matchup.

I think this requires a more than casual glance when using bowl season to guage conference strength.

PS: Sorry if this is a multiple post. I blame having to retype my email every damn time. POST THIS TIME DAMMIT!!!!!!

#37 Your excuse last year was that he bobbled the ball in some reverse angle shot (I looked at that too, and he didn't). I've seen that video a dozen times, and the Temple guy's foot was in. Absolutely a blown call. And Louisville wins that game without that blown call as well.

I'm not a fan of any of those teams by the way. But the ass raping by WFVU and the bowl game loss to Wake was certainly some instant karma.

Albino,

Because we all know that Wikipeida is always accurate: the below link has the most comprehensive bowl matchup grid I could google in 5 minutes. According to this the SEC bowl teams can never finish higher in the SEC than their opponent finishes in their own confernce. Though only the Cotton/Chikfila guarantee a B12/ACC #2 vs SEC #3/4/5, all others require the highest possible SEC pick and the lowest possible other conference pick to get even a tie. Again, NONE give the SEC an advantage.

I think this is worth more than a casual glance when using bowl season to measure conference strength.

#37: UCONN is high on my list of teams that AU should play home and home with in football. I'm a bit of a closet UCONN fan after watching their program grow and they way they play football. I think that UCONN coming to Auburn for help with increasing the AU basketball program's profile in return for AU increasing the UCONN football program's profile is win-win for both schools.

It helps with OOC scheduling for both schools in football, increases national awareness of both schools (would likely be an ESPN game), would help UCONN with it's stadium expansion (or even get creative and schedule the game at a nearby NFL stadium like Giant's Stadium or Gillette Stadium) and would give AU exposure in a market it usually doesn't get for football.

As for basketball, it gives UCONN an easy two wins, helps with OOC scheduling (not that you need much of that in basketball), and will help AU's basketball profile and recruiting.

I would LOVE to see an AU-UCONN Football/Basketball series. In fact, they are my #1 school that I would like to play OOC if the deal can be arranged like that.

@33: Stafford torched Tenuta's and Muschamp's defenses during that seven-game stretch, which was no mean feat, and he put on a 2nd half clinic against Virginia Tech last year.

Tebow racks up stats in an offense designed for exactly that. http://blutarsky.wordpress.com/2008/08/20/how-long-he-can-endure-remains-to-be-seen/

Stafford? All he does is win games.

Per UConn bullshit: The Temple guy was out of bounds and Louisville was up 10 in the 4th quarter. Two legit wins.

UConn won 9 games last year and is better this year with just about everybody back. As long as they beat UVA in week 3, they will be undefeated into October and hopefully the nation will take notice.

To the Auburn fan: I have NO idea why UConn doesn't schedule teams like Auburn for football/basketball rivalries. They do them with schools like Indiana, UNC and UVA but that doesn't really help the football team. And the bball team needs no help.

TigerInATL -- it tends to happen that way to some degree for every conference. For example:

Holiday Bowl: Pac-10 #2 vs. Big 12 #3.
Cotton Bowl: Big 12 #2 vs. SEC #(~3).

Add in the BCS pulling teams out and conference selections not being required to be in the same order as conference record and it starts getting really wacky.

blon,

I haven't taken the time to brak down your bowl lists from 2007. But I think another thing to consider is that in many bowl games, the SEC team is matched against an opponent who finished higher in their respective conference. I think this is an interesting bit of information that gets left out of bowl season analysis.

Blah blah blah Ohio State too low, last year wasn't even expected, everyone back, this is the season, blah blah.

The only thing that bothers me (about all the polls) is the baffling confidence everyon seems to have in Matt Stafford, I mean Georgia didn't exactly run a murderer's row for their 7 win streak ending last season. This season, they have a 4 game stretch that is brutal, while Florida has a (relatively) easy SEC schedule with a Heisman winner at QB...

Sell UGa, buy FL.

Not really disagreeing with your point, but Ga. Tech hasn't been in the SEC since 1964.

Oh, and one other thing about UCONN.

I would love for AU to do a Home and Home with UCONN with a basketball tie in for home and home.

BCS teams where AU helps the profile of UCONN in football, and UCONN helps the profile of AU in basketball.
