After practice, Julio Jones is quoted as saying, “If the NFL doesn’t work out, I look forward to a promising career with Cirque du Soleil.”

Making plays like this, JJ will make JPW look like a respectable QB.

by The Snake will Drive Again! on Aug 15, 2008 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

Of course, it’s all relative to the size of the person in the background. If he’s around 6 feet tall, that means Julio’s about 3 feet off the ground. If he’s a circus midget, Julio might have problems jumping over the sunday paper.

Either way….wow.

by WhiteSpeedReceiver on Aug 15, 2008 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

He’s in mid-spike.

by Allahver Fist on Aug 15, 2008 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

Anyone know what his vertical leap happens to be? I assume he has incredible speed and will turn out to be a great possession receiver, if all his hype holds up over the next four years.

  1. I watched a replay of the Alabama-Georgia game yesterday on ESPNU, catching it late in the game, from the beginning of the fourth quarter. Great finish. JPW didn’t look too bad, but maybe that was a good day?

  1. Well, a good finish for Georgia. You probably weren’t too thrilled at the outcome.

I am playing with Alabama in an online dynasty with some friends on NCAA09. I benched JPW for Star Jackson, who leads the Heisman race after 8 weeks. Last night I beat Ole Miss 46-3 and Julio went off with about 10 catches for 200 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s a goon, he’s a beast, he’s a muthafuckin problem…and I’m just a huge dork.

Judging on how JPW usually throws in a game, I expect to see a lot of this from Julio “Iglasias” Jones.

by NewAZTiger on Aug 15, 2008 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

According to Rivals, he has a 41 inch vertical. And he’s 6’4. Jebus. Why’s he have to play for Satan?

by Ninja Football on Aug 15, 2008 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Blon – yes, JPW at times looks like a very capable SEC QB. However, at times he looks well below average (LSU and MSU games 07 come to mind). I like the kid; great attitude and grit, but his brain just seems to get in his way at times. Hopefully the new OC and his “QB friendly” offense will settle him down a bit.

by The Snake will Drive Again! on Aug 15, 2008 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

@ 11

He certainly is very talented and no doubt Mel Kiper has his eye on him already.
His “ups” won’t help him dig balls off his shoelaces.

by Ryno on Aug 15, 2008 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

It will be difficult for JPW to get the annointed one the ball when he has a perfect view of all the renovations made to the Georgia Dome ceiling.

FWIW, I say AJ Green has the better collegiate career.

I like it, Coop. Bringing the pain with two weeks to go…

Just be sure to come back here after Clemson goes all “late season Tommy Bowden” during the first game.

And I’ll be sure to come back after Bama loses by 50.

Once again, bama fans will get in a lather about something that doesn’t happen in a game.

Julio should declare for the NFL immediately. In fact, the entire Alabama freshman class should do the same. Those guys are awesome.

While Julio is the physical freak, there are players on the team that claim to have witnessed Terrence Cody perform a 360 degree dunk on the basketball court.

Why is this impressive? Unlike Julio, Cody plays defensive tackle, and is rumored to be the largest player Alabama has ever had at 6’6" and 390lbs.

The few films floating around of practice make the guy look like Glenn Dorsey playing against a peewee football team. If he is half the player on the field that he appears to be in practice, then the SEC offensive line coaches should be fearful for their jobs.

What the images and stats don’t tell you is Julio’s incredible YAC factor. He is extremely hard to bring down and elusive as smoke from a distant fire. Look for him to leave some jaws dropping around the league on routine hooks, outs and crossing patterns, followed by 15-20 yard bursts and more.

by Crimson Geezer on Aug 15, 2008 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

For some reason, that picture reminds me of the scene in Return of the Jedi where the Emperor sneeringly informs Luke that the Second Death Star, while appearing to be largely under construction, is actually a fully functional battle station. And then they proceed to obliterate the nearest Rebel Heavy Cruiser.

I honestly don’t think Auburn will be able to get away with that chop blocking shit this year.

They got a bit of a free pass this past season, but if it starts happening again, I look for refs to be on the lookout for it strongly and taking appropriate action, meaning most likely expulsion from that game for the offending lineman (or linemen).

by El Kabong!!! on Aug 15, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

SEC speed apparently now translates to the vertical plane also.
I hear Jim Delany is proposing that the Big 10 allow mini-rockets embedded into players’ shoes

I don’t know what report YOU heard from the AL/MS all star game…….but take it from someone who was there and isn’t a Bama fan, Julio Jones had everyones jaw on the ground. He also had a pretty moderate case of turf toe we were told, but it didn’t matter…..he made folks look foolish.

The only guy who contained him was Alonzo Lawrence but he won’t have to worry about him anymore because Saban went ahead and made sure he came to Bama as well.

I hate to say it as an LSU fan but in about 2 yrs Alabama is going to be a BEAST. The team this will really kill is Auburn…..at least at LSU we’ll get most of the top talent in Louisianna, I have no clue what Auburn’s going to do.

First of all, THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING BLOG EVER. You guys are the best. Second, as an Alabama fan being ignored for about a decade, it’s nice to hear even haters talk about the program. Third, Jones has a documented 41 inch vertical. However, who wears cleats on astroturf? Looks like a shit storm to me.

by JAY on Aug 16, 2008 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

This picture is deceiving. That football was actually wedged up in the rafters and Julio jumped up and got it. The cameraman merely caught his final descent to earth.

Nope, not photoshopped.

AU fans, check out the third shot. You had better hope that the 5’6 db’s on your team(the ones that didn’t get beaten up by a teammate) don’t end up looking like that…

Look at the second photo. Are those two DBs white? Those two kids didn’t have a prayer against Jones.

I hate to sound racist about my own race, but we just should’t play at a CB or a saftey position. Unless we are going up against a slow, big, white TE.

by blon57 on Aug 16, 2008 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

#33,

Julio had a bad case of turf toe in the MS/AL All-Star game. Even with that he still was amazing.

#40,

First day of pads and a large storm came in. Weren’t going to pass up practice in pads, so they went in doors.

If any AU linemen try and chop T. Cody, I hope the chopper has his affairs in order. The impending “Timber!”-like falling to Earth will, in effect, turn said lineman into a tub of goo.

Unless white DBs have an incredible vertical leap and great speed, they are dead in the water. Know many of those?

by blon57 on Aug 18, 2008 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

Jack Hunt was a white guy who played safety for Saban on his 2003 championship squad. Around the same time, he recruited another white kid, Craig Steltz, to LSU. Steltz was a pretty important player on last season’s team, also a safety, and I think he started every game. Both of those guys were probably quicker than they were fast, but had good game speed, read the ball well, and hit hard. Guys like that will always have a place in defensive backfields, provided they have good coaching.

by Nick Saban Stole Your Lunch Money on Aug 18, 2008 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

@49
When is the last time you saw an Auburn CB go for the ball? They’ll be running through his legs so he ends up on his head.
