Speaking as a Longhorn fan, my only real complaint regarding Tebow involves phrases like “greatest player of our era”, or more pointedly, “a specimen Vince Young couldn’t even become in a dream” – like the one found in Mens Fitness.

It isn’t his fault that a vast majority of the national media has crowned him some kind of superman. And it isn’t to say that he isn’t a fantastic player because clearly he is. But I have seen Superman. There is only one Superman. Tebow lost twice as many games last year as Superman did his whole career.

Orson, yes I too believe that the general nature of blog commentary has denigrated into trite and juvenile overworked diatribe. I believe that I can speak for most Dawg fans and most of our SEC brethren, that in the future we will adhere to these standards.

I think there are not too many gripes against Tebow. But one of them is that the obscene numbers, the touchdowns at least came mostly from the bad opponents. Notably the games against Troy, FAU, Vandy and WKU. I know it stands to reason that a team would fair better against a worse team, but what got Tebow the Heisman was the huge number of TD’s. When he went up against the better defenses of the league, Tebow was much more human. Also, the best team the Gators beat last year was UT, and the highest ranked was Kentucky. So maybe the criticisms aren’t completely unfounded.

All nyuk-nyuk-nyuking aside about Florida’s 5th-place conference finish last year, Tebow is in a strange place. He’s loved by his school, adored by the media, has put up ridiculous stats, and has a Heisman. Great! He also has 1/2 wins of any relevance (the early-season beatdown on a Tennessee squad that, let’s face it, was clearly on not-giving-a-crap mode). The losses aren’t necessarily his fault. He dinked around in the first half against Auburn and was sacked a lot and had the game-ending fumble against Georgia, but none of that was worse than Florida’s sucktastic D. Sure. But the losses are still there. 9-4, a 5th-place conference finish…sheet, Georgia did that in 2006 and we were all pretty steamed during it.

Matt Stafford isn’t in Tebow’s league, but here’s what he’s done: He brought his team back from 18 down against a very good Virginia Tech defense. Kicked Auburn’s ass twice. Had the clutch comeback against Georgia Tech- you may laugh at that Tech team, but I don’t think they’re worlds worse than Meatchicken ‘07. Hit Mikey Henderson in OT. Oh, and beat Florida. Finished second in the nation. Won a BCS bowl.

Tebow’s got the stats. Stafford’s got the stories. If I were designing a college football program, I’d take Tebow. If I were designing a college football program based on games already in the books, I’d take Stafford.

Living in Jacksonville, both his hometown (essentially) and a Gator haven, I loathe the constant knobslobbering. It’s pretty much impossible to hate Tebow though if you’re at all rational.

Oh, and Stafford has led a few game winning type drives, including a full-fledged fourth quarter comeback against Tech in ‘06.

No, I am not saying he is better than Tebow because of that.
