TIM TEBOW SAYS “TA-DAAAAAAHHH”
Tim Tebow hasn’t led Florida to a fourth-quarter comeback win or won an SEC championship WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM MY GOD?
There’s logical quibbles to be had with the premise–how many sophomore quarterbacks win SEC titles or lead fourth-quarter comebacks to begin with, much less in their first year starting?–but the essence of the thing is an accurate variation on the preseason fluff piece. Tebow good, could be better, Tebow improve, Tebow not care about awards, etc, etc. All true, especially the bit about becoming a better pocket qb. Then again, he’s probably the only junior in the country with a frame of expectations hung around “a.) needs to win conference title, b.) must lead at least one fourth quarter comeback.” (Stafford’s close, but much of the heat is dispersed by proximity to Knowshon Moreno.)
There’s also the issue of metaphorically burying the Heisman, which LSUFreek works up nicely below. Magic trick!
All due apologies to budding superstar Ricky Jean-Francois, who was chosen because he looked like a badass from LSU, and not because we think a Heisman should be slammed up his nose. Oh, and let’s pre-empt the usual list of Tebow-relevant comments, since God forbid an opposing fan admit a player was exceptionally talented.
–”He’s a glorified fullback.” Who completes 66.9 percent of his passes.
–”He’s the best 9-4 Heisman winner evarrr!!!” Totally his fault for not playing defensive tackle.
–”WOOOOOO GEORGIA!!!” You can count! Even with half your population failing to finish high school! Good for you, Chester!
–”Tebow sucks.” Yes, probably the best of the arguments here, since it doesn’t even start with a logical premise, bypasses reason, and instead moves directly to invective. Just go ahead and use this instead of any of the weakling verbiage above.

I’ve never bought the argument that going 9-4 should disqualify someone from winning the Heisman. It’s supposed to be “most outstanding player”, not “random starting QB or RB who doesn’t suck on one of the two best teams in the nation”. As you said, it’s not his fault the defense needed asbestos jerseys.

This story is the media equivalent of the “make up call” among referees. Last week someone else came out with a list of the top “clutch” players, and Tebow headed the list. But Tebow, while the best player in the country hands down (I see no room to dispute that, disappointing Georgia fan that I am), hasn’t really done anything that’s “clutch.” That’s not a knock, more a statement of fact regarding opportunities that have presented so far; and I certainly wouldn’t call him UN-clutch. The first piece was typical lazy article generation, and now someone else is generating an article to present the “other side.” Ho hum.

You can rule out Texas Tech QB and Hawaii QB, since they’re not important enough to have names anyway.
McFadden had some great games, but wasn’t even the best RB on his team the first half of the season, and his teammate averaged 3 yards/carry more than him too.
And the normal default Heisman place to look, well I don’t even know who the best player on LSU or USC’s team was, and Chris Wells was hurt and came on too late for OSU.

As a fan of a team that’s 2-1 against Florida Heisman winners, I’m cool with it if they move the award ceremony to Gainesville and rename it the Tebow.
Obviously he’s an incredible talent and a good kid. Still, the excuse that “Tebow doesn’t play DB” is a facile one when you’re looking at his record against top teams. Granted, making you look bad is what good teams do. But, by the same token, bad teams (like WKU, Troy, Vandy, South Carolina and FAU) can make your stats look absolutely inhuman and that has certainly been the case with Tebow.
Tebow either rushed or threw the ball an average of 43 plays a game. Against the aforementioned bad teams, he passed or threw on 40.25 plays. Even when Florida was blasting FAU 59-20, Tebow was involved in 45 plays. Point being, there’s a reason Tebow looks so gaudy on paper.
Here’s his average line against Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Michigan: 58.3% comp % (66.9% season),136.4 QB rating (178.3 season), 3.5 TD/INT (5.3 season), 2.6 yds/rush (4.2 season). Those are some sizable deltas from his season averages.
Respectable stuff, but not legendary. Legends are the guys who rack up the numbers against the big boys, not the ants.

D.N. Nation says:
All nyuk-nyuk-nyuking aside about Florida’s 5th-place conference finish last year, Tebow is in a strange place. He’s loved by his school, adored by the media, has put up ridiculous stats, and has a Heisman. Great! He also has 1/2 wins of any relevance (the early-season beatdown on a Tennessee squad that, let’s face it, was clearly on not-giving-a-crap mode). The losses aren’t necessarily his fault. He dinked around in the first half against Auburn and was sacked a lot and had the game-ending fumble against Georgia, but none of that was worse than Florida’s sucktastic D. Sure. But the losses are still there. 9-4, a 5th-place conference finish…sheet, Georgia did that in 2006 and we were all pretty steamed during it.
Matt Stafford isn’t in Tebow’s league, but here’s what he’s done: He brought his team back from 18 down against a very good Virginia Tech defense. Kicked Auburn’s ass twice. Had the clutch comeback against Georgia Tech- you may laugh at that Tech team, but I don’t think they’re worlds worse than Meatchicken ‘07. Hit Mikey Henderson in OT. Oh, and beat Florida. Finished second in the nation. Won a BCS bowl.
Tebow’s got the stats. Stafford’s got the stories. If I were designing a college football program, I’d take Tebow. If I were designing a college football program based on games already in the books, I’d take Stafford.

I think there are not too many gripes against Tebow. But one of them is that the obscene numbers, the touchdowns at least came mostly from the bad opponents. Notably the games against Troy, FAU, Vandy and WKU. I know it stands to reason that a team would fair better against a worse team, but what got Tebow the Heisman was the huge number of TD’s. When he went up against the better defenses of the league, Tebow was much more human. Also, the best team the Gators beat last year was UT, and the highest ranked was Kentucky. So maybe the criticisms aren’t completely unfounded.

It isn’t his fault that a vast majority of the national media has crowned him some kind of superman. And it isn’t to say that he isn’t a fantastic player because clearly he is.
