I'm guessing Phil Steele is dealing with a huge amount of blowback from Dawg fans who are exulting in the otherwise heavy pre-season hype, and who suspect him of drinking too much Gatorade. He's obviously right about the scheduling issues for UGA, but ranking Florida number one is what really rankled.

You have to realize that knowledgeable Georgia folk figured after '06 that Florida was moving into a position to dominate the SEC for a long, long time. So This is the Year to challenge perpetual Gator Hegemony.

Personally, I'd be happy if the Dawgs reversed last year's two losses, against the Evil One, and versus Phat Phil, whose blind luck in surviving the Vandy and Kentucky games is what ultimately blocked Georgia from an SEC and MNC shot.

BTW, I read Steele this year for the first time, and though he obviously knows whereof he speaks, and provides some great data, I did find it very tiresome that he devotes about 80% of his text to defending his omniscience in the past. Show, don't tell! And don't use so many damn exclamation points!!!!

You might be onto something there. Another interesting tidbit to throw out: Spurrier supposedly lobbied for Jr. to be the OC at Duke.

Reggie Bush always said that he doesn't believe in God, but he's afraid of Him. DC Trojan, I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is the NCAA.

spartymike @ 15 - you're right, there could be non-monetary considerations like sideline access that would effect the risk - reward calculations. Now, when you say boatful of Hungarians, are you thinking like the Hungarians you might see in certain kinds of, um, travelogue videos shot in Budapest? Because $1MM would be cheap cheap cheap in that case, never mind the van full of money.

NewAZTiger @ 16 - how careless of me. Still, I remain confident that Ess-Eee-See speed will prevail and the Tide will get rolled by one of their conference colleagues first.

Grant Teaff? Bull****.

Real reason? Look at Dook's coach - think there might be a reason he used Mr Teaff as cover?

Old hatreds never die in the SEC.

@ DC:

He may be putting a large premium on future access to USC sidelines, so it's not yet clear he has ventured into -ROI territory.

It is really, really interesting though...$1MM in legal fees, and only 300K liability...there has to be a lot implied in that situation...like a boatful-of-Hungarians-and-a-van-with-$90MM-in-cash type stuff.

You can tell Bush was a sociology "major" with the ROI he's getting on the legal fees.

As for the question of sanctions against SC, we can but wait and see. If I were Fresno State, I'd be getting nervous right about now.

@5- Good points.

Trenni Kusnierek had a good response to the whole situation.
http://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/andrewsreact.html

Very telling...google Trenni's name and the top links are guys asking/debating if she is "hot". Not her ability as a reporter or her knowledge of the game, but her looks. Men are visual and smart women know that. Looks seems to matter as much, if not more, than almost anything else. Women have to live with that fact and balance what we do (and how we dress) professionally so that we are taken seriously.

I deal with that issue when I am trying to land a new male client. I actually have to work harder to prove that I am more than just a blonde. I'm not complaining or want to raise a sexism fight, it is just reality. You just live with it and adjust.
