FULMER CUP: CORRECTIONS
According to the Charleston Gazette, the Fulmer Cup scoreboard is due for a major correction in the case of Kendall Washington, the redshirt freshman wide receiver who broke, entered, and feloniously assaulted a man in putting the ‘Eers on top…for a hot minute, that is, since Washington wasn’t even on the team.
This was evidently a point of confusion for more than just your average sloppy blogger:
According to the story, “it’s unclear what this means for his football future at West Virginia University, where the 6-foot-2, 192-pound Washington was in the mix to be a receiver for the nationally ranked Mountaineers this season.”
Uh, not exactly. Yes, Washington was a member of the Mountaineer football team last season. He even caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the spring game from backup QB Jarrett Brown.
There was additional confusion with the listed rosters for West Virginia, as well; Yahoo had him, then didn’t have him, Rivals didn’t have him, and so on into mediocre confusion, etcetera. Consider all of the points for Washington’s offense removed from WVU’s record, thus returning them to their prior total of nineteen points.
Additional revisions: Georgia’s Clint Boling had a DUI reduced to reckless driving, meaning his ability to convince the judge he was merely “operating a vehicle in a frisky fashion” and not “driving drunk” equals a reduction of one point for UGA. In response to emailers: Jeremy Lomax’s weapons charge has already been removed from the total, and should be correct. If not, we will penalize other teams for no good reason and even things up in the second half.

I think there could be more cups in the future, to compliment the Fulmer Cup: a) for alumni of a program, i.e., Jamelle Holieway, Kendall Washington, Peter Gardere; b) recruits that aren’t technically in the program yet, like Mr. Jarboe.

For #5: Yes, the WVU SID said yesterday that Washington was dismissed by the team after Spring practices. I assume that was part of Stewart’s program to take out Rodriguez’s trash, but no further details were provided.

“Washington, however, is not a member of the WVU team. The coaches dismissed him after spring drills.”
NOW it makes sense. Row, Todd!

Notice that Kendall Washington is mysteriously on that version and not on the current version. Maybe just an oversight that had a stronger reason to be corrected lately. The google knows all.

Hmmm… that’s interesting, EchoWhiskey.
Still, schools don’t always update their online rosters during the off-season, so it’s possible that was just an oversight.
Or, to be similarly generous, that Washington was kicked off in the spring, but with some sort of lifeline from the coaching staff to “earn” his way back on the squad (i.e., comm. service, good behavior, good grades, etc.), and thus, he wasn’t removed immediately from the official roster.
But that sure looks suspicious…

It seems to me that WVU is trying to “backdate” his dismissal to make them look better in the public eye.
There was no announcement of his being dismissed, and he was a scholarship athlete, which is usually announced pretty quickly to make room for incoming recruits.

Steve – I have a strong recollection of someone posting about this incident in early July. There was some reference to as yet unknown WV football player being investigated for a robbery. Like Kansas State University being in the top 10 in recruiting dollars? They aren’t getting much erturn for their dollars…well, I guess I shouldn’t say that. They beat Texas last year. Other than that, though, not much else stands out for that school.
Some of the large divide between numbers is the cost of traveling to recruiting visits. From the article:
In the mid-1990s, when the Big 12 was still known as the Big Eight, homegrown athletes populated most of its teams. Coaches “would occasionally bring in a young person from California or Florida,” he says, “but that would be the rare exception to the rule.”
Now the conference reaches from Iowa to Texas, and more coaches are going after athletes outside the region.
Just as coaches are setting their sights farther, so are athletes. “Kids who 20 years ago wouldn’t dream of leaving the mid-Atlantic area, they’re getting [scholarship] offers around the country,” says Mr. Leckonby, formerly of Maryland. “And West Coast kids who would stay in the Pac-10 think nothing of coming East to Duke or Maryland.”
Orson should do an analysis tomorrow on Rumin-ations.

Your welcome. As far as victories go, I guess we will take it. We still have a lot of month left since its is early in the 4th quarter. I was browsing last years FC in the archives on the right hand side, and Illinois took the title with 24 points on 8-29-2007. They had a decent year on the field. We shall see. With Prince Hall now suspended, I think recruiting for LB’s should be at an all time high….
Don’t know if that helped ILLlinois as in weeding out the bad apples, or that they had a stable full of wild horses they had to tame/break.
