Are you saying that DickRod didn't run Pat White into a 9 or 10-man front? Or perhaps didn't make awful offensive calls?

The reality is that DickRod got the deer-in-the-headlights look very early in that game, and kept hoping that White/Slaton/Devine would bail him out with another miracle run, as almost happened with Devine's kickoff return. Alas, Rod went right back to his same execrable play-calling, finishing up the night with an off-tackle run by Slaton on 4th-and-3 that got 1 1/2 yds.

That's reality. That won't happen next year.

Auburn/WVU threadjack? wtf mate.

Sullivan, it should be noted that the 291 yards were given up by LSU but in a 3OT game, one of which for Arkansas consisted of a 25 yard run that still upsets me a bit and gets my HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Eh, we'll see. In that game, either McFadden or Jones carried on 1st down 12 out of 19 times. That sounds about as imaginative as DickRod's calls against Pitt (18 carries out of 19 1st downs). White threw 19 passes against OU vs. only 10 against Pitt. If you're expecting Stewart to keep running the ball into a 10-man front like DickRod did -- well, keep hoping.

Gonna be an exciting game.

Kwitcherbitchin'...this is a thread about Napoleon...keep your comments on point!

After all there is plenty of evidence that L' Emperor did not die on St. Helena, but rather on a plantation in Lousiana as the husband of Betsy Balcombe, 16 years after his faked death in 1821.

Not to get into a flame war, but Auburn's defense also stopped McFadden and Jones - to the tune of keeping them at less than 45 yards each and 0 points.

That was the same McFadden and Jones that smoked the National Champion LSU Tigers for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the second to the last game of the regular season.

Feel free to disregard these facts if you will. Go ahead and cheer your team with brimming confidence of Bama-fan proportions.

The result will likely be the same.

wes @ 27

i dont think you can lump wvu in with the rest of the big east when talking about speed, individual or team. all of wvu's players are fast - in fact, loadholt and other members of the "best offensive line in the country" are still grasping into thin air after our defensive ends blew past them to sack or hurry bradford.

listen - wvu is one of the fastest teams in the country, filled with some of the fastest players in the country. i have always loved auburn and can't wait for the game - it should be fantastic - but to say auburn is gonna smoke wvu, at home, in a night game, because wvu hasnt played teams with speed (georgia, oklahoma, south florida, etc.) is just foolish.

besides, if you argument rests on the fact that auburn is fast and they stopped tebow, then you haven't yet seen speed.

Then again, Auburn is installing a brand-new offfense that WVU has been running for eight years now, and whose defense is very used to defending. Since you agree that speed isn't going to be the issue, it's going to be things like zone blocking schemes, familiarity with the offense, and skill players. WVU has all five O-linemen back from last year, and the receiving corps will be upgraded as well. The quality of the backfield goes without saying.

Transitivity is a poor test usually, but in this case it's all we've got -- and last year Auburn lost to a Mississippi State team that got smoked by WVU to the tune of 25 points. In case you've forgotten, Patrick White went to the house on the first play from scrimmage.

The Oklahoma defense thought they matched up well against WVU too, but events proved otherwise.

By all means, though, feel free to come up to Morgantown next year thinking that the BE isn't a competetive league and that Auburn's speed will be something the 'Eers have never dealt with. We welcome you.

WV is gonna get smoked, plain and simple. If AU stopped the Tebow spread TWICE, they will stop a WV offense used to Big East defenses. I'm not going to go into SEC speed or any of that. I am going to say with a great amount of confidence that Auburn will be the best defense WV sees all year and they will certainly be used to slower Big East defenses they will have played for about two months.

the key to West Virginia football is not to tell us we're gonna win.... the Pitt game last year was too much of a party, even Pitt fans were in on it. When that team has to listen to how theyre gonna get smashed by "SEC speed"... well, they pop off for 400 rushing yards... make no mistake, they play big in big games, and given the previous history with Pitt, that wasnt a big game, it was a coronation.... Totally the team's fault. Totally the fan's fault. Totally the media's fault. Totally the coaching staff's fault. We all bought the hype and we got caught asleep at the wheel. I promise noone is going to be caught napping on a thursday night in morgantown...

Pitt didn't _catch_ Pat White; DickRod kept running him right at the 10 guys in the box. Look at the Fiesta Bowl to see how easy it is to catch Pat White when the coach actually calls a few passes downfield to make the D play honest.

All props to Pitt for their game plan, though. Wanny called what was necessary to stop what DickRod kept running. It's that "definition-of-insanity-doing-the-same-thing-expect-different-results" schtick that left DickRod holding the bag at the end of the game.
