Any ND Alum worth a damn would be the first person to agree with you re: Malpass. The man would make 9 figures at any Wall Street company based on his returns.

I think college football is better when ND, Bammer and tOSU are all IRRELEVANT.

I would include USCe in that list but that would be repetitious.

Can we put to bed all this nonsense about only having 9 seniors at ND last year? Who freakin' cares. Georgia had 12 seniors on their two-deep last year.

Only five of those seniors were considered "starters" and only a handful more got meaningful playing time. Two of those were running backs Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin, who gradually lost playing time to Redshirt Freshman Knowshon Moreno. They started three freshman on the offensive line. In total, 11 of the 22 starters were underclassmen.

Georgia finished #2 or #3 (depending on the poll) and was 11-2 last year. Notre Dame was 3-9 against a far worse schedule with comparable recruiting classes the last few years. Please stop using Ty's recruits as an excuse. It is possible to win games with young players. Perhaps it takes a good coach to do so...

Also, most coaches receive only a small portion of their salaries from the actual university. The rest is paid through endorsements and other avenues like radio and tv shows that make up the bulk of the actual compensation. I thought everyone knew that. Apparently not. While Weis may only make $650,000 from the actual university, be assured that he makes $4,000,000 total for being the head football coach at ND.

irishwave--
that FWJG highlights who is the most important person on the ND payroll: Scott Malpass. Dude is personally responsible for increasing the university endowment by fourfold (or something like that) over the past decade or so.

@20:

No kidding. For what it's worth, there is an outside chance of an entire starting linebacker corps named "Smith," so that's something.

OhioDawg, unless ND is committing tax fraud, Weis' salary is as I previously posted.

On the "Willingham's players" argument. Yes, he did recruit those guys; however, Samardzija never sniffed the field while Willingham was there, but in just his first game under Weis, he thrives. Quinn was barely a 50% percent passer with a 1:1 TD:INT ratio, and we all know what he did under Weis. Ndukwe was a WR who also never got any action at that position under Willingham, and Weis converted him to an NFL starting safety.

All of those guys mentioned were Willingham's first full class. We saw the results of Willingham's later recruitng efforts this year. 3-9 is what happens when you are forced to play all true freshmen and sophomore's because your predecessor was a lazy coach who would rather work on his putting game than spend time on the road recruiting.

Samardzija, Zibikowski, Ndukwe etc...

Doesn't Notre Dame have any players with last names that make sense phonetically?

NDTeve - I've seen $4 million as his salary. I don't know. You can be overpaid at any number, however, if you don't generate results.

I thought Quinn, Samardzija, Zibikowski, Ndukwe etc. were recruited by Willingham. If so, he won with Willingham's recruits and as the percentage of his recruits got larger relative to the whole team, the performance suffered.
