TREV STRIKES AGAIN! NOTRE DAME ON THE UPS

Trev strikes back! Trev thinks Notre Dame recovers this year, which along with Phil Steele picking them as one of his most improved teams means you'll get the floating head of Tom Hammond haunting your dreams with "WAKE UP THE ECHOES" for only the rest of the offseason. If the Floating Head of Tom Hammond haunting your subconscious isn't enough, perhaps the thought of us having Phil Steele's 2008 Guide To College Football before you do will make you writhe in sufficient agony.

(Florida? Number one in the SEC East? You're killing us with high expectations, Phil. More on the goodness tomorrow.)

We interrupt this Trev post for something really fucking funny….there has to be a future EDSBS entry in there somewhere. Absolutely priceless pictures.

Carry on.

Ah crap. Trev was feelign good abotu us last year too, and we all knwo how that turned out.

However, if Phil Steel (our only hope against SkyNet) feels we have some upside, then by God, I’ll take what I can get.

Is it really that much of a stretch saying ND will be greatly improved? Where else BUT up can they go?

And no, Trev, college football seemed to have survived last season just fine with ND being totally irrelevant.

Maybe the stupidest clip I’ve ever heard.

It’s that kind of nonsense – which in fairness isn’t being spouted by a ND alum – that gets me going.

Weis is overpaid.
He won on Willingham’s talent, not his own.
They won’t be back.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T State University said a football player died from complications of heat illness on Tuesday.

The school said Wednesday that senior Chad Wiley collapsed after a voluntary workout on campus Tuesday. Officials said he was transported to a hospital after an athletic trainer stabilized him.

The 22-year-old from Black Mountain was a two-year starter on the offensive line.

Weis doesn’t make that much compared to other coaches in college football and he lost last season with Ty’s players. Next stupid comment please Ohio?

2) has their own office (lawyas) or
3) doesn’t give a shit. (me).

Poor Trev… I almost feel sorry for him, sitting there in the ATL paying for studio time at WXIA to record a piece of football-based flatulence for mighty “SprintTV”.

This poor shitbird is a lock for a bronze bust in the Pantheon of Regrettable Show-Biz Career Decisions.

And BTW, who the hell is “Norter Dame”?

I never get the comment about college football being better when Notre Dame (or Nebraska or whomever is the traditional program that is struggling) is relevant.

I know I had a grand ol time last year counting the losses – if they continued and Notre Dame never really amounted to much of anything again? I don’t think I’d care. I wouldn’t count the losses – I’d just shake my head and move on.

Did people in the 1960’s argue thst CFB was better off when Army and Fordham were relevant? I just don’t see how the argument holds water, and the fluid power structure is what makes the game great.

Strong words. Strong, retarded words.

yes, having heard the “CFB is bettah when ND is relevant” argument many times, i have yet to hear a single validation of it.

Trev is as relevant now as ND will be this year….
but ND will prolly be back, whereas Trev has no hope without the Worldwide Leader.

#9, Weiss is paid relatively well for a 3-9 coach, not?

by dawgaddict on May 28, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

I love all these “journalists” (and the idiots who echo them) that claim Weis is making $40 million. From the Fort Wayne (IN) Journal Gazette:

“Weis may be making a lot as the Irish’s football coach, but the post-extension contract numbers that had been speculated to range from $21 million to $40 million might not be accurate. The school paid Weis $598,000 in salary from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, along with $51,628 in contributions to employee benefit plans and an expense account of $66,649. …
Weis, who will enter his fourth season at Notre Dame in 2008, did receive a bump from his salary reported by the school from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006. In that time frame, Weis made $565,566 in salary, $53,115 in deferred compensation and benefits and had an expense account of $55,100.”

These were from ND’s tax forms. I say not a bad price for a coach who brings you 2 BCS games in 3 years.

by irishwave on May 28, 2008 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

NDTeve – I’ve seen $4 million as his salary. I don’t know. You can be overpaid at any number, however, if you don’t generate results.

I thought Quinn, Samardzija, Zibikowski, Ndukwe etc. were recruited by Willingham. If so, he won with Willingham’s recruits and as the percentage of his recruits got larger relative to the whole team, the performance suffered.

Song – lighten up.

by OhioDawg on May 28, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Samardzija, Zibikowski, Ndukwe etc…

Doesn’t Notre Dame have any players with last names that make sense phonetically?

by Andy Axelotl on May 28, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

OhioDawg, unless ND is committing tax fraud, Weis’ salary is as I previously posted.

On the “Willingham’s players” argument. Yes, he did recruit those guys; however, Samardzija never sniffed the field while Willingham was there, but in just his first game under Weis, he thrives. Quinn was barely a 50% percent passer with a 1:1 TD:INT ratio, and we all know what he did under Weis. Ndukwe was a WR who also never got any action at that position under Willingham, and Weis converted him to an NFL starting safety.

All of those guys mentioned were Willingham’s first full class. We saw the results of Willingham’s later recruitng efforts this year. 3-9 is what happens when you are forced to play all true freshmen and sophomore’s because your predecessor was a lazy coach who would rather work on his putting game than spend time on the road recruiting.

that FWJG highlights who is the most important person on the ND payroll: Scott Malpass. Dude is personally responsible for increasing the university endowment by fourfold (or something like that) over the past decade or so.

Can we put to bed all this nonsense about only having 9 seniors at ND last year? Who freakin’ cares. Georgia had 12 seniors on their two-deep last year.

Only five of those seniors were considered “starters” and only a handful more got meaningful playing time. Two of those were running backs Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin, who gradually lost playing time to Redshirt Freshman Knowshon Moreno. They started three freshman on the offensive line. In total, 11 of the 22 starters were underclassmen.

Georgia finished #2 or #3 (depending on the poll) and was 11-2 last year. Notre Dame was 3-9 against a far worse schedule with comparable recruiting classes the last few years. Please stop using Ty’s recruits as an excuse. It is possible to win games with young players. Perhaps it takes a good coach to do so…

Also, most coaches receive only a small portion of their salaries from the actual university. The rest is paid through endorsements and other avenues like radio and tv shows that make up the bulk of the actual compensation. I thought everyone knew that. Apparently not. While Weis may only make $650,000 from the actual university, be assured that he makes $4,000,000 total for being the head football coach at ND.

by The Realist on May 29, 2008 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

I think college football is better when ND, Bammer and tOSU are all IRRELEVANT.

I would include USCe in that list but that would be repetitious.

Any ND Alum worth a damn would be the first person to agree with you re: Malpass. The man would make 9 figures at any Wall Street company based on his returns.

CFB is better off without nd, trev and weis. the pinching irish will be horrible for years to come as weis continues to gag…no hidden video men around to help the fat man now…nd = blowhards! enjoy your 5 wins chumps and lil jimmy gettin crunched again.
