Around SBN: Gary Carter, Mets All-Time Great Catcher, Has Died

AT LEAST HE WAS THE SHOOTED, NOT THE SHOOTER

As noted in the headline: we're both glad he's okay and not the guy pulling the trigger given the recent trajectory of Florida offseasons.

Former Armwood All-American lineman Matt Patchan, who now plays for the Florida Gators, was shot in the back Friday night at Sadie Park in Brandon, Armwood coach Sean Callahan confirmed Monday morning.

Callahan said he has since talked to Patchan and added that "he's fine." Florida coach Urban Meyer just confirmed in a statement that Patchan was shot and is doing okay.

If he has a massive season on the line, chalk it up to involuntary iron fortification. Mike Barwis does NOT endorse this method of vitamin delivery, btw.

Not trainer-approved method of working in vitamins.

Shot in the back and doing “fine”? Shot with what…

It all makes sense now, my son is missing one of his Batman action figures and the accompanying “cannon.” We should probably report it, as it appears it was used in the altercation in Sadie Park.

That method of delivery wouldn’t supply iron. It would supply copper and lead; neither mineral is high on the list of necessary food suplements.

Ok…that’s three, together with the Finch transfer and the creative financier of posthumous indebtedness…now we’re done, right?

I’m guessing the shooter is a die-hard Hofstra fan.

Take that, Stony Brook.

Any chance we can give him a fulmer point on the bases of pure bad-assness! The bullet is still in his shoulder and he could play the season with it in there. That should be worthy of the Rambo trophy….damn it, he needs an award!!!!!

Anyone who followed this kids recruitment would be not surprised!

Really – is this the best we can do?!? With regards to the Red Cross – you can choose to allocate your money to international or domestic uses, and even to a specific disaster effort.

CONTEST UPDATE:
1) Florida – $250
2t) South Carolina – $100
2t) Oklahoma – $100
2t) Mississippi State – $100
3) LSU – $75

As a poster on the Fansblogs site said, more up-to-date results may get more donations… his moneky- pull lever-get food analogy was spot on.

Do you know what a pistol is, Patch? I got one in the car if you’d like to see it. I like to carry it. You never know when you’re going to need it. A situation may come up. For example, someone’s been drinking…and about to drive a loved one home. Then I like to know I have it. Not to kill, no. Just to maim. Take a little off the shoulder. The elbow. Shave a little meat…off the old kneecap. You got both kneecaps?

AULIVES @ #12…I thought his recruitment was a well thought-out, reasonable, somewhat public process…kid and whole family were canes and the family supported the kid who chose a program that fit him despite the family ties…nothing there that would make me think he was arrogant, much less worthy of high velocity lead poisoning. What have I missed?

  1. Pat – Orlando Antigua had a bullet in his head when he played basketball at Pitt. It was behind his ear. That should get some points for something there.

Or just a warning to stay out of the Bronx.

  1. SB

At the end he did sound more level headed, however read these quotes below from Rivals…..“mentally weak” LOL

Even when he was just a Rivals100 member, Seffner (Fla.) Armwood lineman Matt Patchan didn’t believe he was getting the credit he deserved and now that he has been elevated to five-star status, guess what, he still believes he is underrated. On the surface that may come across as a bit conceited, but listening to his reasoning behind his statements and he comes across more driven than cocky.

Matt Patchan
“You know what Sir, where do they have me rated now?” asked Patchan. "They have me at a five-star now, but the way I look at it you can rate me a one-star if they want to – I think they would be wrong – but I think they’re wrong not to have me at the very, very top of the list, period.

“Take the film from the last camp I did, which was the UCF camp, and put it up against anybody and I guarantee you I am the best player in the country, period, at any position.

“That’s just my confidence level – I’m not trying to sound cocky. If I’m not considered the best, I look at it like maybe I’m not working hard enough since it’s not getting through.”

His self assurance isn’t limited to his own ability – it carries over to what he thinks of his team as well.

“My expectations are the same as they have been every year that I’ve played football. I expect to go undefeated and win state. Anything less than that is considered a failure. Even if you’re at the lowest of the lowest schools, your expectations should be the same. You should come to work every day with the attitude that nobody can beat you and you are the best team and you are the best player in the country.

“That’s how you have to approach this. If you don’t approach it that way, you’re mentally weak and you shouldn’t be playing football.”

I love these discussions:

Your [insert rival school]’s recruits are mean arrogant sucky people, who are attention whores and dishonest.

My [insert your school] recruits are honest hard working, and would never lie and cheat the way your recruits do. They are merely misunderstood.

Just saying

by Jonathan on May 12, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

Check these quotes,

“I want to play both ways in college,” Patchan said. “I know there aren’t many people doing that but I talk to the coaches and that’s the first thing I tell them. Most coaches say they’ll give me a shot.”

I’m relentless and fast off the ball,” he said. “Most linemen are fat and slow but I’m quick. Linemen don’t have to be big and fat."

My recruits will shoot your recruits….after we take your recruits guns away from them, then, in turn, the Tuscaloosa PD will then shoot our recruits, the

We gators are unused to being victims (aside from our secondary in 2007 – zing!), so we may need some clarification…if you are shot, do you lose fulmer cup points? After all fulmer cup points=street cred, so is the contrapositive true?

What does the school have to do with the discussion, I don’t give a shit what school he is headed to. He is a sucky punk! JK, but really kid is a high fan of himself and I maybe his mouth had something to do with the bullet in the back???

AULIVES @ #16…got it…sounds a little odd from an 18 year old…then again I was never a highly motivated five-star recruit whose stock in trade was successfully leveraging my 6’7" frame against extremely large people with bad attitudes. My milieu was more surfing, women and beer…bad attitudes and motivation was for those not getting laid.

by sb on May 12, 2008 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

  1. I was just saying, that had he gone to UGA I would say his attitude was ambitious, competative, and showed his drive to win. All admirable qualities for the most part.

Unless he pulls a Hornsby, I’m thinking a lot of teams would take the kid.

(you see what I did there with the coining of a term for dispicable socail behaviour, yeah, you know you’re going to use it)

Are Fulmer Cup points applied for being shot if it is later determined that he had it coming, or simply “needed shootin’”?

He backed off of UGA when Richt took him to Mat Drills on his official…

Said (paraphrased) he “didn’t like to work out in the morning”…

by ah on May 13, 2008 7:57 AM EDT reply actions

And just for the record, Patchan has already played on both sides of the ball. The coaches moved him over to the defensive line where he had an impact because of his work rate and he might have a chance to start in the fall. So while maybe he sounded arrogant, it turns out he was prescient/

by baconboy on May 13, 2008 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

baconboy @ #39…“…sounded arrogant, turns out he was prescient.” Wish I had said that.
