Gotcha...I didn't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill and that's probably the case here. The prescriptive/descriptive nature of English grammar is something that I've been guilty of debating before, to little avail. I guess I'm just predisposed to favoring a particular side (having had my former-grammar teacher mother beat one side of the debate into my head for the better part of thirty-some-odd years now). Hell, she's still got some book from 1908 that she whips out whenever she has need to prove just exactly how right she is on any given point of grammatical contention. So I'll concede to you entirely here...I could probably just as easily argue the point that the more conversational-tone of blog writing is precisely the reason that I prefer to receive a healthy dose of my information via such. I didn't at all intend for my playing the devil's advocate to spill over into being a dick territory. I guess it is sort of dickish to point out one tiny error, in the face of the scads of unacknowledged instances of my enjoying the hell out of Orson's writing. My bad, there. Didn't mean it. But thanks for engaging me in a discussion anyway.
DCTrojan, speaking as a Husker fan...I'm just pleased to finally note that such is not the only lost cause I've chosen to champion for lo, these many years. Yet, as long as there are those who rail in the aisles of supermarkets everywhere, the cause is not lost! But correcting grammatical errors is nowadays just about as cool as coming out in favor of incorporating more CB ten-codes into the vernacular...so it's just nice to know I'm in good company.

And I should add that I replied in the first place because I recognize the emotion behind DT's post. :)

I can never decide to laugh or cry when I see the signs at the grocer's for "Fresh Meat" , though my favorite by far is at the checkout area where customers are warned that All Merchandise Must Be "Paid-For" Before Leaving the Store.

While I find myself deeply cognizant of your considered arguments, I humbly submit to you that I cannot in good conscience agree. English, like every other tongue that Man has created, has both a codified (though frequently and at length debated in the literature) set of written norms and prescriptions as well as a collquial vulgate rife with errors and malapropisms. And yet, many of the flowers of our literary canon have arisen from the sullied soil of the spoken language.

Are not the mellifluous Romance languages themselves the product of gradual deliquescence from the Latin? By what unprecendented contemporary privilege are we, as consumers of English in but a miniscule portion of the mother tongue's storied history, assigned the role of ultimate arbiters of prescriptive usage? I, for one, an unwilling to assume the mantle of the Academy for hundreds of millions of my fellow English speakers.

I'm sorry. I'm just fucking with you because I have a big report due that I don't want to write. Believe me, correct grammar is not the hill that blog credibility will die on.

Also, as achingly well-intentioned as lexical pedantry can be, you're still going to get called a dick when you offer unsolicited corrections of another's speech or writing.

DT, admit it, you are really Buzz, are you not? Quit printing these comments out and grading them with a red pen....I bet Buzz routinely diagrams sentences in his spare time.....that guy is so uptight, I bet he has a Dominatrix beating his arse on a schedule.
Spell check is a big hit, does it check grammar too?
I bet Buzz don't read no mutha flippin Ebonics blogs, his head would implode.....what it do? I bet he hated that movie "How She Move" because of the slang.

TCOAN, I wholeheartedly agree and would even add the caveat that under normal circumstances of my daily enjoyment of EDSBS, I wouldn't even bother pointing out such an error. I was just playing off the tone of the interview, which I seemed to interpret as a dictation on the part of Bissinger as to the ways that blogs are inferior to traditional MSM outlets. As part of such, I felt like such was merited and I am certainly surprised that an ass like Buzz didn't beat me to the punch and correct Orson during the course of the interview! But I certainly understand, and was not trying to sit in any sort of judgement. Lord knows I'm regularly guilty of far more egregious errors in grammar, punctuation and the like. As I said, I typically subscribe to the belief that "that's what editors are for" and acknowledge that most bloggers don't have such at their disposal. I certainly didn't mean my point as any sort of "dick move"...I'm on the bloggers side here. I was just pointing out that (given the subject matter) perhaps a bit more effort to abide by the idealistic standard that the establishment routinely trots out among their "exhibit A" in the case of "What Blogging isn't" might be in order. If not, then I'm afraid that stodgy old dolts like Bissinger are actually correct and blogs are assisting in the "dumbing down" of society (insofar as errors of this sort appear to be not only accepted, but defended among users of this medium). "Queen's English" was a poor choice of words...what I meant to say was: "the most basic and simple rules of grammar that most Americans learned by the 7th grade". But look what happens whenever you point such out? All of a sudden, I'm being called a dick! I don't know what is to be considered informal about conducting an interview with someone on a hot-button topic-of-the-day that is to be published on the website of a mainstream media outlet?! But fine then...if I'm the dick, go ahead and live by whatever rules you want. Go on and say things like "...there's a lot of people..." like the dumbfucks I hear on our local ABC affiliate out here in Bumblefuck, America. It still doesn't make you any less wrong.

Ha ha! TCOAN said "you're" when she should've used "your". Awesome!!!!! (I'm betting it was intentional to see if anyone would catch it)

It's kind of a dick move to point errors out in informal situations. Unless they use "whom" incorrectly. My view is, if you're pretentious enough to use "whom" in spoken English and you use it wrong, you deserve to get called out for it.

DT, darlin', Orson spent more than 4 hours transcribing this interview yesterday in order to post it today. As a former editor, I understand your pique. However, if you want you're news while it's hot, especially when it is produced by a single man, you might have to look past the rare agreement error.

Bissinger’s whole platform is dripping with irony. First, he claims himself to have a rudimentary knowledge of blogs, but yet he comes on Costas prepared to speak intelligently on the subject. Then he takes one sliver of evidence, plucked from a profane commenter on KSK, to support his theory of the profane nature of ALL BLOGS (during a profanity-laced tirade, no less). Somebody, somewhere on a blog I read over the last week said it best, (sorry I can’t recall to credit the when, where & who) “It’s like taking a romance novel off the shelf in an airport bookstore and saying ‘Fuck you Tolstoy…your whole medium is rendered useless…” (sic).
Then in your interview, he then proceeds to proclaim that he’s not all that interested in the opinions of others…which would seem to serve in making his belabored point on this whole issue even more meaningless. So I guess you really cut to the heart of the issue with Buzz. Screw the Maureen Dowds of the world…but as long as Buzz Bissinger has an outlet to express his opinions, that’s all that really matters.

One thing Orson, here’s where he came off to me as being at least a little contrite…because my guess is a pompous ass like Buzz would’ve nailed you on this if given the chance, but perhaps it even escaped the all-knowing genius from the old guard:

“SH: But there’s also humor blogs. There’s a lot of humor blogs out there that are really only accountable to being funny. And if they’re funny, then people will read them, and if they’re not funny, then people won’t read them.”

You’ve gotta get your is/are verb agreement straight there…You worked it out by the end, but I think you mean “…there ARE also humor blogs. There ARE a lot of humor blogs out there…”
This is really nit-picky, I know…and a very, very, common mistake that I see and hear in all forms of media daily. But it’s just constructive criticism. I’m certainly not above making a grammatical error (or twenty) myself…but I’m not the one going toe-to-toe with Mr. “I cut my teeth with Woodward and Bernstein”. This is an area that many blogs get tripped up on, common mistakes of grammar that have become so common that they’ve even grown to routinely infect the office of our fair president. I love EDSBS and consider you a great wordsmith and writer…and it’s my personal opinion that “that’s what editors are for”. But in the event that you’re serving as your own editor…I’m just saying, the Queens English has been long overlooked by many in the blogosphere–perhaps a stricter adherence would help claims of legitimacy in matters such as this.
