Pretty much, dude. The playoff proposal fronted by the SEC and the ACC died unholy, cruel deaths at the BCS meetings in Florida yesterday. First Delany pulled at its flesh with pliers; then he had minions whip it with electrified cables; then it was forced to swear fealty to the Rose Bowl forever before sitting unsupported on a bamboo spike. When it finally caved and spoke mercy, Delany then pissed on it, ripped its organs from its body, and had its head hung over the city gates as a warning to the citizenry. As the Wiz wrote: The formula for success is simple: Line up the nonconference schedule with home games against the likes of Tennessee Tech, Maine, Wofford and Villanova, ensuring four victories. Then grind out a 2-6 conference record and presto — you’re bowling! There is hope in all of this for one team looking for an elusive bowl win: thanks to Central Arkansas, Notre Dame might win a bowl game this year. We think we said this last year, too, which shows you that just when you think you’ve hit bottom, the floor drops out and deposits you into a seamless concrete tank filled with lit kerosene and flameproof crocodiles. Thugs don’t always work. Charlie won’t recruit those hoodlums and thugs you know and love, college football fan. His plan has worked so far. Weis mentioned that he has had very little social problems to deal with in his three years as coach of Notre Dame. “I could get hoodlums and thugs and win tomorrow,” Weis said. “I won’t do it that way.” Weis still has not learned how to be a proper head coach, and this is further proof, because as anyone knows, Iowa tried just that, and look where it’s gotten them. City Boyz Inc NOT EQUAL wins.
We think that’s a myth. Shavodrick Beaver, hyperheeled qb recruit for Michigan, receives the ass-end of some awkward Tom Luginbill phrasing in an excerpt from Feldman’s entry from yesterday: He is probably very similar to what Pat White looked like coming out of high school as a passer, but Beaver is much bigger and may be more explosive for his size.” That’s all a myth, right? Further field research required. It’s a road…you go…when you die… Take a shot from the mancannon of the internet in the face, Bissinger! Where else can you get bearded hipsters singing odes to the Rainbow Road level from MarioKart, a game we will waste at least seven hours this weekend playing. |

Don’t like the current BCS system, it allows for padding your schedule with easy games.
Don’t like a playoff system, it renders the regular season irrelevant.
I think each conference should have changing BCS shares that would depend on things such as out-of-conference wins, schedule strength, yadda yadda. That way, current “heavy” conferences are kept honest while the upstart conferences have a chance to go to a serious bowl.
Now, to convince the Orange Bowl that USM can bring enough fans . . .

I didn’t sleep very well last night at all, I feel very inadequate because I’m not a “#5″ like the other 98% of the super witty posters here at EDSBS, I feel that if I had not dropped out of school in the 8th grade to become a complete and total slacker with a bag of dope and a skateboard that I would be able to reply to this blog in a much wittier fasion and then other posters would reply back to my posts (@8 your responce was so cool and witty). No, I’m an overpaid sales donkey at a lumber yard with next to zero responsibility and unlimited access to the inter-web. So excuse me if my post are only slightly witty and full of mis-spellings and bad grammer.
Maybe I can go to night school….

Tressel’s implication was that if you continue to recruit players who have made an oral commitment to a school, you’re scummy.
Rodriguez was the subject for that moment, but the comment and attitude also extends to Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Les Miles, and anyone else who has tried to flip a recruit.

As a journalism student (just because we drink more than Group 5′ers and earn a pittance doesn’t make us ALL bad), I must ask you, Orson, this: who do you use in Mario Kart? I’m partial to Diddy Kong at the moment, though if we’re talking DS there’s no beating Dry Bones…

Dave -
While I hope ND keeps Weis for the comedy possibilities, the bloom will be off that rose as the fertilizer degrades. ND is not going to wake up the echoes anytime soon, despite the ravings of their fanbase. Charlie is just simply not a very good coach. He got developed talent in NE and worked a scheme. He can’t develop the talent he gets at ND.
Regarding the RR/Tiller tiff, Tressel was asked if there was a gentlemens agreement on committed recruits. His response was “only among gentlemen”. Of course, UM took offense. Kind of like when the coach is bitching about the team not hustling when you’ve given all you’ve got. If you think he is referring to you, then you probably weren’t hustling. I think RR knows which category he resides.

Wait… hasn’t Notre Dame had three top-10 classes according to rivals? Who are these thugs that would make those recruiting classes even better? Maybe the problem is he doesn’t live up to his own press clippings as a coach.
This isn’t basketball… a few thugs that don’t go to school can’t singlehandedly turn around a program.

Wilbon made a good point on PTI yesterday about Weis:
Notre Dame has never won with “thugs and hoodlums.” They can’t get into school there anyway. It’s a red herring, and sounds like an excuse for not doing better. Rockne, Parseghian, and Holtz won there without them, why can’t you, Charlie?
It’s just a continuation of Midwestern self-righteousness that we saw back in Jim Delaney’s anti-SEC rant last year. It’s a minority of fans that think that way, but there’s a really strong vibe coming from the administrators and leadership in that vein. First Delaney, then Tressell and Tiller in their “we’re too noble to continue to recruit committed players” shots at Rich Rodriguez, and now from Weis.

Sounds like Weis has been drinking the Delany kool-aid re:recruiting. Perhaps ND should join the Big Televen after all.
Seriously…it makes me laugh…”I could get hoodlums and thugs and win tomorrow”…yeah…that Tebow is such a thug.
Charlie should go into politics…he deflects blame “like a champion”.

And 7 is dead on about ABC/ESPN. When they had the BCS, nary a peep out of them.
Now that’s Fox’s, you would think the BCS raped their daughters and killed their mothers with the amount of disdain and hate they heap upon the BCS.

Weis almost sounds like the Notre Dame marketing strategy has shifted to “OK, so we’re not that good, but we’re willing to trade a few wins each year for self-righteous moral superiority.” In other words, they’re Georgia Tech without a conference.

Ever since the mouse took over ESPN, the talent has evaporated. Luginbill is just another example in a long line of talking faces that should be the true target of a Buzz Bissinger rant. Funny how while ABC/ESPN had the BCS, they didn’t want a playoff either. Now that FOX has it, they want one. Regardless, I still don’t know why the SEC is so hot for one. Ever since Auburn was left out, they have been given the benefit of the doubt every time. While they have been deserving lately, these things run in cycles, and I can picture them getting in over another equally deserving school in a future year.

I’m disappointed by the lack of SNES rainbow road in that video. So much of my childhood is defined by that sort-of-3D-in-a-very-2D-kind-of-way stretch of multicolored highway.

Charlie Cheeseburger is such a hypocrite. However, they have enough cupcakes and donuts on the schedule to accumulate 8 wins.

I love how they want to protect the “sanctity” of the regular season, but they do things like allow I-AA wins to count towards bowls that will only ruin it.
Oh no, a playoff ill inevitably increase in size! What about the 34 confirmed bowls for this year, meaning 68 teams get to go? That’s not a concern?
Oh, and Mario Kart Wii’s Rainbow Road is the best yet.
