SPRING GAME NUMBERS: HUSKERS UBER ALLES

Them's the numbers for the spring games, compiled by the guys at the Big Red Network who, understandably, are quite proud of the massive attendance for Pelini's first spring outing. Insert jokes about "places with nothing to do" leading the list, though we're wondering about Iowa State being so low on the list: shouldn't more people have attended just to huddle for warmth? Chizik-nickels don't buy as much kerosene as they used to, we guess.

Trick Question:

How many people in the big red network know the difference between Ole Miss and Mississippi?

Answer:??

by Southernyankee on Apr 29, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

That crazy Nutt must have had two games and ironically, the same number of folks showed up to both games.

by Crabapple Buck on Apr 29, 2008 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

so…that means….Georgia Tech and Kentucky are the same school, too!!

by Dave on Apr 29, 2008 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

wow…i’m surprised “mizzou” and “brigham young” didn’t make the list

by gerry dorsey on Apr 29, 2008 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

Dave,

Mississippi = ole miss

GT does not KY

by Jonathan on Apr 29, 2008 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

I was at the Kansas spring game, no way there was 10K there.
GBR

by adam on Apr 29, 2008 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

When you consider that the next 10 on the list would have beaten/did beat Nebraska on the field last Fall, you can see why the GBR folds are trumpeting this.

When you can’t win the game on the field, I guess you find your victories wherever you can.

by Beergut on Apr 29, 2008 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

folds = folks

by Beergut on Apr 29, 2008 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, because massive spring game attendance wil help you beat inferior competition, right, Alabama?

Jonathan,
I was posting in my best-est Holy Grail dialect:

VILLAGER #1:
If… she… weighs… the same as a duck,… she’s made of wood.
BEDEVERE:
And therefore?
VILLAGER #2:
A witch!

Heh, yeah. For the record, I am aware that Ole Miss and Mississippi are in fact the same team. Chalk it up to double dipping my spreadsheet and bleary eyes from digging for attendance numbers for 50+ teams.

Anyway, thanks for the link Orson.

Adam @ #7,

Bet your ass there were 10k there. The west side of Memorial was pretty full…at least until the sun went below the stadium around halftime. Then it cleared out pretty quick. I had to get to West Coast Saloon, so I couldn’t stick around. Business meeting or some such.

Also, KU would have had a lot more people but for the fact that they moved it to a Monday at the last minute due to weather.

by PeteJayhawk on Apr 29, 2008 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

When referring to “places with nothing to do”, are we talking about Nebraska, Alabama, or both?

by LL on Apr 29, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

14, I would dare say that comment applies to about 2/3 of all the schools listed.

by EZ on Apr 29, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Ole Pi$$ plans on counting one of the two spring games toward bowl eligibility.

Kinda like the old Monty Python skit on John Cleese & Eric Idle climbing the twin peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Not to mention that the USC and Florida fans probably stayed at home anyway because “the beach is too crowded” or “I have no money to go out” or “my daughter has a china vagina so I keep her home on Saturdays” or some other excuse like that.

by meatybob on Apr 29, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

It’s crazy that some of these schools had such perfectly round attendance numbers. Did Florida, Auburn, Virginia Tech, FSU, etc stop letting people in when they hit a certain goal? Surely at least one ticket counter thought it would be funny to let one more guy in so that the attendance at Auburn’s game would be 35,001.

Penn State: 73,000 braaaaaaaaaaaaaains!

by Rob on Apr 29, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Too bad we didnt beat Maryland in Attendance. Can’t even blame it on the Masters or anything. Damn no scapegoat.

In other news I look forward to the EDSBS rundown of the Paul Johnson Hole in One. KTHX.

by Brian on Apr 29, 2008 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Missouri would have a bit more there (probably would have crested 30k), but for the fact that it was 40 degrees, in a steady drizzle and a lot of people who would have driven in from St Louis or KC looked out their windows, saw that Missouri Weather had reared its ugly head again, and went back to sleep.

We still filled up the west side of Faurot pretty well, the Garage Sale was good (for my part, I picked up an old David Overstreet jersey and a baseball shirt) and tailgating was drunk as usual.

by El Hombre on Apr 29, 2008 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

#18: A lot of schools don’t release official attendance numbers. So, the round numbers are most likely due to reporters guestimates.

by Jason on Apr 29, 2008 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

as a fan of the 4th place team (and you can reason #1 and #2 teams may think likewise) – the wins don’t come as easy anymore. When one is guaranteed you attend, you attend.

Dave,
Stupid tone on the internets, your comment is far funnier with the voice prompts

by Jonathan on Apr 29, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

You should do a chart called “most delusional Fanbase” and relate spring game attendance numbers to season win totals (excluding 1AA)

I bet it would look about the same!

by Scott on Apr 29, 2008 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yoyofutbawl, +100 cocktails for the Mt. Kilimanjaro reference.

And FYI, the only reason Ole Miss had that many at their spring game was for the ceremonial Eli Manning-Patrick Willis Circle Jerk. Go figure, the last spring game that had comparable attendance was…Eli’s first spring game as a Rebel!

May Archie and Olivia be blessed with nothing but granddaughters.

by the croominator on Apr 29, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Never mind…there are two grandsons (but they’re Cooper’s so they don’t count).

by the croominator on Apr 29, 2008 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Scott,

Nebraska would definitely be at the top. They think they can win 9 or 10 games with the schedule they have this year. Crazy.

by Big12Guy on Apr 29, 2008 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

[Insert school name here] would have had [blank] if it wasn’t for [blank]

Quit making excuses, KU and MU fans. Your fan bases are fair-weather (quite literally) and inadequate at best.

#18,
You beat me to it. I like how Clemson closed the doors at 25k. I understand it wasn’t even close to that many.

by Charlestownecock on Apr 29, 2008 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

Croominator,

Too late. Arch Manning exists. He’s a grandson. He’s Cooper’s kid. If all things go well, completely unpredictable spinal conditions will avoid him at all costs.

I saw the texas game on Fox Sports and there is no way there was 42K.

I haven’t seen the A&M game either (it hasn’t been uploaded to the website yet) so I don’t know the legitimacy of that number yet.

Why did the Big Redders fail to add into the Florida total the ESPN nationwide television audience? Dammit.

by sb on Apr 30, 2008 8:07 AM EDT reply actions

Yall aren’t the only ones who confuse Ole Miss and Mississippi State-our favorite one is ESPN- they regularly run Ole Miss info commercials during Mississippi State games, hehe. You should see the State message boards after THAT happens. Oh, Ole Miss had home baseball games that weekend-and had over 9,000 fans everyday for those. Hotty Toddy!

by Lynn on Apr 30, 2008 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

Hey Raider Red (#10) I’m assuming you’re a Texas Tech fan…it didn’t seem to stop us from whopping your butts a few years back did it? RTR!

by TheDeuce on Apr 30, 2008 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

but how many have the stones to charge 10 bucks a head as do we in south bend? yes , i know its for charity but still we got 30k to show and pay! maybe others do as well and cocktails to them and their adult offspring.. just thought i would add to the insanity of spring football

by john on Apr 30, 2008 3:46 PM EDT reply actions

38. Nebraska charged too. There was even tickets being scalped. So think of another excuse for ND’s overrated fairweather fans. Oh and i cant wait till Hefty goes the way of Bill Callahan for getting great recruits and not developing a single one.

by James Woods on May 1, 2008 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

john-
Actually, Nebraska charged 10 dollars per seat as well, and sold out months in advance. Tickets were going for $80+ in the week preceding the game.

by klowe on May 1, 2008 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

Why wouldn’t Husker fans think we can win 9 or 10? We have 3 guaranteed out of conference wins, plus automatic wins against Baylor, K-State, Colorado, and Iowa St. That’s 7.

The games in question are Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Virginia Tech. We play Kansas, Missouri, and Virginia Tech at home, so I think 9 wins is very attainable. Hey, the schedule is very much in our favor this season.

by DT on May 1, 2008 4:06 AM EDT reply actions

WVU had more than 18,000 for their game. There were only 18,000 tickets printed up and they were gone long before the game started and thus many people just paid the money and went in w/o purchasing a ticket. Recent reports are in the 22+ range would would be more accurate, also, students aren’t added to the equation…
