Meatybob @ 34 – “kleph, did we start the war with Japan?” No, but as i understand it we effectively cut off their oil, they figured that was a precursor to war, and decided to get in the first shot against the US… since they were tearing it up in the rest of the Co-Prosperity Sphere anyway.

Kind of like how the US started the War of Northern Aggression despite the Confederacy firing the first shots, if I understand some of the “traditionalist” explanations.

So, my cousin and his family was visiting his paternal grandmother (no relationship to me) about 10 years ago out in San Francisco. The family went out souveniring, and my aunt picked up a re-print of the front page of a 1941 newspaper that says, in gigantic font “Pearl Harbor Bombed,” or something to that effect.

As they were unpacking, my cousin’s grandma sees the re-print and, very loudly, states, “They did it again?!?! I knew you couldn’t trust those Japs!”
