WE CANNOT TELL A LIE*: GEORGIA’S WASHINGTON OUT
The Bulldogs may want to temper expectations of 2008 just a bit, as starting linebacker Marcus Washington is out for a long time. He will be undergoing surgery soon (surgery being the only thing someone can “undergo,” just like kickoffs are the only thing that ever “ensue”) and his recovery time is estimated to be about six months. That takes him to about the start of September, and that’s not counting the loss of lifting, conditioning, practice, etc. etc. so it looks as if a medical redshirt is in order here. Granted, it’s not as if the loss of one linebacker means it’s a one-way ticket to Fourandeightsville for the Dawgs, but any time you start losing senior starters, consequences are usually dire.
*Rejected George Washington jokes include hack references to wooden teeth, cherry trees, and the Delaware River. Also, we lie constantly.

He’s the 2nd string Mike linebacker. While it certainly hurts our depth at MLB, the coaches have been cross training Sam linebackers at Mike & Will due to the diminished need for the Sam position thanks to the emergence of the spread offense.
As a Georgia fan, I won’t be tempering my expectations for the 2008 season.
Really dude, Stafford’s sprained left thumb is a bigger story than this.

Mayhem can also ensue, but that’s about the only other thing I can think of ; but most would say that Kickoff coverage and mayhem are one and the same.

Akeem Dent has already been cross training at Mike, since UGA is not using the SLB as much anymore. It always hurts to lose an experienced LB, but Washington wasn’t the starter…Dannell Ellerbe is.

Also, melees ensue all the time.
Oftentimes they ensue prior to kickoffs, even.

Is this evidence that you’ve joined Holly and Orson’s “mutual hatred of Georgia” club?
Washington is a senior, as already noted, and one that’s failed to meet the expectations that were held for him, thus: disappointment ensued.

Washington hasn’t been a disappointment in any sense of the word. He was very integral to the run defense last year, but had a nagging hurt hamstring and a knee ( I think) the year before that.

Guys, what do you expect? OPS is a clever guy but he does not know anything about relevant football. Iowa, ladies and gentlemen…
Iowa.
He would be better suited to writing for the Letterman show or Conan’s show.
But, you and I have taken more than a 5 second glance at Georgia’s depth chart and we all know about Georgia’s recruiting prowess in recent seasons.
This is a non-story.
While I hate Georgia, I hate them less than Tennessee or Florida, or the rest of the SEC, sans Vandy.
Something tells me Willie Martinez is not exactly shaking in his Nikes….

No Washington references? Well, I’m going to DC tomorrow. I’ll need to remember to get a bunch of one dollar bills for the tolls. The hotel I’m at has a great continential breakfast. I’m seeing the Whigs play a concert later that night with my buddy, Pierre L’Enfant. I’m meeting him at the Mt. Vernon Inn, a small bed and breakfast. I was told to look for the big white house. I heard that its run by the father of this country music singer who’s really famous. I’m flying back to England on the Concord after I stop by a UK basketball game in Lexington. Last time I was there the bar I was at ran out of whiskey and there was almost a rebellion. The last basketball game I went to I saw the Celtics in Boston play the Knicks: it was a massacre! I just can’t wait to get back home to Virginia to see my special lady Martha.

They need to temper their expectations anyway. They’ve got one bona fide receiver, a running back who hasn’t really transcended flash-in-the-pan status yet, a decent-but-nothing-special quarterback and a D that, while strong, was prone to collapse last season. Toss that in the least predictable division in the strongest league (featuring the defending Heisman Trophy winner), and you might want to wait to buy those tickets to Miami.
