CALL US RAINBOW 7: LAS VEGAS FANDANGORAMA
We’re off to Vegas to cover the first weekend of the tournament for The Sporting News, and it promises to be Con Air awesome, minus the Nicholas Cage Skynrd locks. Follow our descent into madness–and really, the aim is to destroy this gig and never, ever let anyone come close to our rapid mad post rate ever again–one of several ways.
The Sporting Blog. Not only does it have our interview with Ric Flair, but it will have our posts on what Vegas during the first weekend of March Madness looks, feels, smells, and feels like, including the part where we wind up drinking $2000/bottle cognac from goatskins with the sheikhs of Dubai at a live man versus panther death match in the hills of Nevada.

Step One, this. Step Two, fire up laptop. Step three: MASSIVE PROFITS.
Flickr. I’ll be posting photos live from the fracas, as well, so keep up by following here.
Twitter. For those too ADDled to even get through this blog post, we’ll be posting on the EDSBS Twitter feed muy rapido all day and most of the night.
Your guest host will be Oops Pow Surprise from Black Heart, Gold Pants , a demented gent who promises to not only provide the Curious Index, but an installment of “Things Black and Gold People Like,” the latest in our series of fan profiles. We will usurp the Iowa jokes by saying the only one we know for sure: meth.
Godspeed. And wish the same to us. If we fail to come back from this mission, know that we went to bat country happily.

Also, if you go to the Spearmint Rhino do not take your Amex or any other card with no, or a very high, limit. Trust me on this one Orson. Trust me.

the first time i was in vegas was during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, 1999 - had to check into the hotel using our fake id’s, b/c none of us were 21 - while there, i made my favorite sports bet of all time: Duke -40 vs. Tulsa in the second round - i just remember thinging “Duke by 40? i’d be stupid not to take that much chalk” - Duke covered, winning by 41
a word to the wise: drink only screwdrivers or bloody mary’s (or something else with a vitamin c based mixer) - stamina and health are important, and trust me, there’s no vitamins or minerals in whiskey

I’m so jealous of Orson right now. He’s taking the exact vacation I’ve wanted to go on for about 3 years now. Vegas for the first weekend of the NCAA tourney. All those big screen TVs, all those free drinks… tears soak my cubicle desk.
Also, after reading the first couple of pages of BHGP, I think I need to add it to my regular rotation. Nice work.

Don’t break the internets with all that posting good sir. Last time you lit up the webs, your furious typing caused a tornado.
Do take lots of pictures of:
1) Old Ladies playing video poker wearing sweatshirts with lots of kittens on them.
2) Old dudes with those radiation goggle sunglasses, yea you know what I mean, you went to school in FL.
3) B list celebs
4) chicks working “the skank shift”
5) People wearing mardi gras beads
6) Old high roller Cowboy dudes with young women, or any combination thereof of Asian or Middle Eastern guys doing the same.
7) making it rain
And this is on the house: There is an In-n-Out Burger in Vegas, just so you’re aware.

As most P&C (Charleston, SC) readers know, there is a weekly pro wrestling column on Sunday, and Wrestlemania will be Flair’s last match.
I hope he gets the title again, or that he is at least wrestling for the title.

The only time I’ve ever been to Vegas (well, other than for 9 hours overnight with my parents and little siblings on a three-week family road trip out west) was the Wednesday-Sunday the first week of March Madness six years ago. One of my buddies from college had gone that weekend with a couple of his fraternity brothers every year since he turned 21, and he occasionally invited me along, but I was never able to go for financial or scheduling reasons.
Then, a couple months before our oldest child was born, my wife told me that if I wanted to go, I better go that year. So I did. Three of the best days of my life.
I need to go back, but I fear going at a time other than the first days of the Tourney might be a disappointment. Fortunately there are other distractions in Vegas (so I’ve been told).
Do they still have the auditorium/theater in Paris set up like a huge sportsbook with three games being projected on jumbo screens? That was my favorite place to watch the games. I liked a lot of the other sportsbooks too, but the setup in that theater was pretty sweet.
