ST. PATRICK’S DAY: SOBER AND WEIRD AGAIN
The finest version of “Danny Boy” ever recorded, again in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
What? You assumed we’d pull out the stops and actually play Danny Boy? Hell to the blar-NO stone, and with good reason: it’s morbid as hell like all Irish music not focused on the topics murder and alcohol, and even with cultural fatigue from decades of “fuck me I’m Irish” bullshit that has made Red Sox/Pats fans the hemorrhoid on the ass of professional sports culture, it makes us cry like a scalded baby.

I would imagine that I am probably as Irish as anyone who reads this blog (both of my parents were born in Ireland) and I have to say that it makes me a little upset to see all these idiots who “celebrate” this holiday by getting shit faced and making asses of themselves. Most have no idea who St. Patrick was or what he did, and for them to “celebrate” his day, makes them ignorant.
And amen to the comment about Red Sox/Patriots fans a.k.a. Sports “Uber-Douche Bags”

Green beer is the devil. If it’s light enough to dye it green, you shouldn’t be drinking it in the first place.
Otherwise, St Patrick’s Day is amateur hour paralleled only by New Year’s Eve, I prefer to knock back a couple of Guinness at home and honor the man who was his era’s Samuel L. Jackson, for getting the mutha-!-ing snakes off that mutha-!-ing island.
(And wear the Celtic FC jersey out looking for fights, of course. I’m not made of stone.)

Haybeav, I collected the sash my father wore and got here as quickly as I could… only to read the wise words of VandyJ about green beer. Leaving aside his sartorial miscues – if you must go in that direction, c’mon the Hibees! – he is right that we should focus on what unites us, and celebrate the great dark gifts of Guinness and Murphys.
Besides, since St Patrick was Scottish and St Andrew was Greek, and my forebears were bigots and Orangemen (redundant, I know), and I live in the US and went to a Catholic high school, I don’t know who to pick a fight with any more…

whenever people start the obligitory “you haven’t had a guiness until you’ve had one in ireland” i always tell them “I lived in Dublin for a semester and the best pint I’ve ever had was ina bar below my hostel in amsterdam.course the hallucinogenics, marjuana and hookers breath stew I was bathing in at the time might of added to my enjoyment, but what are you gonna do.”
that is usually enough to end the conversation

As someone who is genuinely of Irish descent, I’m all for celebration of the day. Not necessarily getting completely wasted on green beer, but celebrated heartily nonetheless. And there shouldn’t be any discrimination on who is allowed to celebrate. The more celebrations (no matter the occasion/origin/ethnicheritage/etc…), the better, as far as I’m concerned. A pseudo-irish toast for the occasion:
May you all have nicer legs than yours under the covers before the new spuds are up.

Just a funny side story: In St. Louis, we have the Hibernian parade on the actual St. Patrick’s Day (as opposed to the “Big” parade on Saturday). The Hibernain Order, at least in St. Louis, are known financial supporters of the Irish Republican Army. Every year my Dad hopes in rains on St. Pat’s day because, as he says, “It’s God pissing down on the IRA”

Some of you people don’t understand what American Tradition is.
The American Tradition is to take someone else’s tradition, bastardize it, and drink like snot on it.
St. Patty’s Day – Check.
Cinqo de Mayo – Check
Kwaanza – Check (so what if we had to make that up because Africa is too war-torn to have a good holiday to celebrate)
Mardi Gras – Check
College Football – Check (bastardized Rugby which was bastardized Soccer)

OOC @ 35 – so far as my kids know, children’s programming only exists via On Demand in the middle of the afternoon, and live television only broadcasts college football and soccer.
So of course what they do is wait until my parents come to visit, and then claim that they are allowed to watch Show X, and count on grandparental indulgence to over-ride parental censorship.
