HONESTY’S ALWAYS NICE
We never want Terry Bowden to become a coach again, not because we bear him any particular animosity (really, isn’t the middle of the night the best way to leave Auburn no matter who you are?), but because we really, really enjoy his work for Yahoo Sports as a part-time columnist. Especially, you know, when he gets all honest and stuff.
I can still hear my football coach yelling in my ear … “knock him on his butt” … “kick his fanny” … “blow him off the line.”
Unfortunately, I recall a few other phrases as well. Things such as “take his knee out” … and … “knock his head off.” As a young head coach, I’m not so sure I didn’t say some of those things myself.
We’re not sure we didn’t say a few of those things about Terry Bowden ourselves as a stunned and teary 18 year old Florida fan in 1994 at Florida Field. We take them all back, Terry. That’s Terry Bowden, not Terry Dean. We still mean everything we said, including the bit involving the bucket of water, a rubber apron, and a car battery. Five interceptions? Really?

Did I say sweep the leg? Sorry about that.

And just like that, Terry Dean went from Heisman contender/future NFL bust to one of the leading insurance agents in Collier County.
Did you really need to include the youtube clip from that treacherous game?

Thanks to this website, I now have a plan. Meet Christian Singles. Get a ‘g’ash advance on my pay-check. Take Christian single to Chili’s with my advance. Talk about how I love saving the oceans in efforts to get laid.
I’ll let everyone know how it turns out. That is all.

I don’t know which is worse, Bowden’s column or Bowdens recruiting….wait, yes I do. He is possibly the worst recruiter in the history of organized sports. And I will vehemently defend that statement as not theory but a natural law.

Holy shit! That Auburn QB is awesome! Quick, Chan hire his ass as your QB Coach/Offensive Coordinator and then start a true freshman at QB, for his full four years. The results will be staggering, they will write songs about you, erect statues in your honor….
What? He did already… how did that work out?

And that is the problem with the cover 2 method in the college game… You have to have enough people to cover the gaps in the middle.

As alluded before, Terry didn’t do too well at recruiting. Most of his success at Auburn were with the championship level players that the legendary Pat Dye had recruited and coached.
I’m one of the few Auburn fans who doesn’t hold a grudge against the guy. He’s got a good head for the game, writes fairly well, even coached well, but just didn’t reel in the talent as well as Pat Dye or Tommy Tuberville.
Thanks for the clip. It was almost as much fun as reviewing the Gators go “Teb0w-and-2″ versus Auburn.

Thank you for that video- I just cried a little into my oatmeal.
There are a few things that you always remember in your life- I remember where I was when the Challenger blew up.
I remember watching the Berlin wall fall.
I remember what I was doing when I heard Kurt Cobain shot himself (didn’t care, but for some reason i remember).
I remember the brown recliner I was sitting in when Cal Ripken took victory laps during game 2,130.
I remember the hilarious plaid pants Bo Jackson was wearing when i caddied for him in a charity golf tourney (and Jim MacMahon played barefoot because they wouldn’t allow him to play in flip flops).
And i remember spraining my ankle while celebrating this catch in ‘94 at my friend’s house.
I liked the win in ‘01 better, as AU was unranked and the Gators were #1, and I was 1st row field level and made it onto ESPN getting arrested on the field after the game, but this game was pretty damned good…

I was there, too, as a 16-yr-old UF fan. That TE #82 still haunts my dreams.
It was the first game I remember experiencing the awful, nut-punch-stomachache certainty, as the clock winds down, that your team is going to blow the game in the end.
