For some reason I think this is what Paul Johnson sees when he closes his eyes to make love to his wife.

Only academies can still run these offenses because they require discipline, timing and cohesion.

And you won't end up on Sportscenter.

And in "We are Marshall" they said something about the veer being advantagous to undersized O-line. I guess because of the line flowing laterally at the snap, rather than making them go nose to nose with bigger defensive linemen. And Bowden let them in WVU's film room because that was before he became a douche. But I digress.

I don't know what is going on, but I have my headphones on at work and all of a sudden I hear PB coming through them saying things like "test test test" and something to Orson, and then it went away. I actually almost started talking back until I realized what was going on.

6

The veer was very simple. The QB had to be a quick reader and mobile, but a great arm was not overly important. The HBs set up in kinda an offset T, and the QB would read the defense at the line and audible most of the time. Lots of quick traps, misdirection, option ball, etc.

The QB selected the play depending on what he saw, much like the spread or wishbone. You could start what looked like an option and dart back and pass.

Bill Yeoman of the Houston Outlaws, er Cougars, developed it in the 60s. They beat Tulsa 100-6 one year in the late 60s. Like the wichbone, it faded in the 80s once people got used to it and LBs got more speed.

if i remember correctly, the veer is just a series of read plays for the QB... He fronts out at the snap, sticks the ball in the belly of the FB/RB and reads the defensive end (which has been left unblocked on pupose. sort of like the traditional option play). If the DE comes down to tackle the FB/RB the QB keeps the ball and hits the gap left by the DE. If the DE is playing QB the QB lets FB/RB have the ball and follow the double team given by the G/T (or T/TE) combo. Obviously this is best for athletic QBs who have a run first mentality... You can progress this to play action passes after you've burned a defense with this. Again, it all comes down to an experienced, athletic QB. He has to make lighning fast decisions... Of course it's not recommended to run this past the HS level as the DEs in college and beyond are WAY too athletic and experienced to fall for it. Past the HS level you really don't want to leave any guy with his hand on the ground unblocked. They're just too good to do that. You can surprise em, but you won't make a living doing it...

One of the reasons SOS went to UF instead of UT was that Bowden Wyatt wouldn't change to the T from the single wing.

Just think - SOS as UT HC and No Phat Phil.
