I emailed Mr. Clark and I got the response below:

“NFL studies showed that adding the 25-40 clock will actually add 4 to 5 plays per game based on consistent pace of play. BCS Football and officials themselves were for this change. With the ready for play, live ball out of bounds rules, (This happens about 12 times per game, with on average 3 of those in last 2 minutes) we should get the same amount of plays in a time span that is a few minutes shorter. For the record it is BCS football, TV, Conference Commissioners with lengthy seasons and television that leads the push for faster games. The Committee’s stance is that the game has given about all it can give back without a negative influence on product. Next move will have to be from Administrators or Television themselves. It is still a great game. MC”

#51 - Or just go to the NFL sudden death system. Should be shorter on average.

For those who scream that this system is decided by the coinflip, I heard a statistic quoted a few years ago that the team on D first won 51% of NFL OTs. But that said, the NFL doesn't have whole conferences that rely soley on high powered offenses and discount defenses totally. In CFB this seems to be every conference except the SEC and Big 10.

In order to shorten the length of games: get rid of overtime. In the BCS situation we have now ties would go further toward helping us decide the two best teams in seasons where no one is undefeated.

Wins, losses and ties are a part of football like it or not. It may not be a popular move, but no one complained about game length before NCAA added OT.

“As much as I hate the War Tigers, I will never forget the Aubie student section chanting “Reggie! Reggie!” as he layed there on the field.”

Student sections at cfb games are definitley not the highest expression of the human condition. How’s that for understatement? Anyway, it’s been pointed out repeatedly by various Aubs that RB lowered his head into that hit through no fault of JR’s, so he obviously deserved the taunting..
————————

Er, hey Einstein, that wasn’t taunting. That was support. It started in the Georgia section, and then the entire stadium (not just the Auburn student section) joined in. It was one of the most amazing CF moments I’ve ever witnessed. My brother-in-law, a Dawg through-and-through, said it gave him chill bumps.

One way to make much of this better - including the most ridiculous aspects of it: GET RID OF INSTANT REPLAY.

A flawed rule

That doesn't achieve it's own implicit goal

Which goal is ridiculous

Oh well, Ctchthlu/the Sportsertainment leader love instant replay.

You mentioned looking to rugby for good form tackling. The reason, besides not having a helmet or shoulder pads for protection, is that in rugby it is a penalty for not attempting to wrap in a tackle. I'd rather see that added to the rule book than this other bullshit. It annoys the hell out of me watching players dive at the ball carrier's legs and calling that a tackle.

#38 - Powlus's first major injury, a broken collarbone, happened in pre-season practice his freshman year. The second injury happened against Navy, but it was a broken humerus, which could happen with any awkward landing. I don't think the horse-collar tackle caused it per se. But the injuries did cause him to be fat, drunk, and hanging around too late at parties at Turtle creek. He actually had a remarkable career at ND considering just how un-athletic he looked after that first injury and a season of swilling Natural Light.

You can't have it both ways on the clock rule... whether you like it or not, either it's going to cut the number of plays OR it's going to cause people to go to the no-huddle... but not both.

removal of the incidental facemask should be a fail, that's gonna lead to alot of unearned yardage, ie roughing the passer in the nfl

#6 - both chop blocks were because the guy going high did the wrong assignment, and the guys doing cut blocks didn't see it. It happens most games, and is called in a few. Auburn happened to do it to a great player (and didn't even tear an ACL - which is the danger of the chop block) and the media decided to have that play be one if it's big stories for the year (hello Duke Lacrosse!!)

Dorsey was chop blocked the very next week by Alabama in a very simliar play, and nothing was said. Alabama was, however, called for the penalty.

Ask any lineman, and they will all tell you that this stuff happens in every game. They don't call the line the "crumpets and tea zone", they call it the trenches, for a reason.

And the next person who brings this up will be concussed by Junior Rosegreen while simultaneously being chop-blocked by the Chop Block Posse. Closed Head Injuries and ACL tears are needed to support Hillary's idea of socialized medicine. Take one for AMERICA!!!

Didn't two-time Heisman hopeful Ron Powlus break his humerus because of a horse collar tackle against Navy?

The thought of breaking that bone makes me wince.
