DOOLEY STATUE ISSUE BENDS OUR MIND
Host: Peace in the Middle East. Cold Fusion. Agreeing with Terrence Moore on anything.
Us, hitting buzzer: Um, what are things that won’t ever happen?

Unless you’re talking about this column, where we…um…agree with him? Oh God…we’ve lived too long…

So in 1 year, people who are paid by tax dollars approved the sales of a UGA themed casket and a Vince Dooley Statue to be placed near the Vince Dooley Athletics Bldg.
It’s not THEIR money. Let’s keep going
The Larry Munson Media Booth
The Erk Russell Dome (if FSU does it, can UGA be far behind?”
The Coach Wally Butts restroom facilities and washroom
way too many UGA grads under that gold dome !!!

I like the idea of carving Dooley’s likeness alongside that of UGA VI on Stone Mountain. Just sayin …

The real news, by the way, is elsewhere in the AJC. Rule change fun for everyone!

It doesn’t make a lot of difference to me where they put the statue, but I do like the proposed location on Lumpkin at Pinecrest. Plus, he was a pretty good coach (rendered great to the extent that he may be considered to have been great by the gentleman from Wrightsville). But he was a much better AD. The NCAA championships started falling like rain in Athens during his tenure (yes, I know, women’s swimming and diving, gymnastics, tennis — and one baseball!, etc.).
What excites me most about this news is that it may cut short the rumblings out there for Sanford-Dooley or Dooley-Sanford Stadium. It’s Sanford Stadium, dammit. None of this hyphenated crap.
Granted, I may change my mind when I get my invitation in 2046 to the Sanford-Richt renaming reception. Of course, by that time, CMR’s levitation powers will have matured. The stadium’s capacity will have expanded by another 20,000 or so, as Richt will be able to coach the game while simultaneously maintaining enough concentration to keep the additional spectators hovering over the field.

Does Ray Goof get a statue too? Oops, my bad. It belongs outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
