A big day for the ancien regime. Yesterday was the day to praise allegedly dead aristocrats: 1985 broke out all over again in college recruiting as Notre Dame, Alabama, Miami, and Oklahoma had large days in the handshake wars, passing out Ocean Pacific shirts for the boys and jelly shoes for the girls in a celebration of Huey Lewis-era recruiting trends. Phil Collins duet-awesome is the one and only word to describe how all of them did yesterday. The top ten classes, in an extremely scientific and indisputable manner from Rivals.com: 1 Alabama Again: this is science, and you’re looking at the exact finish of the BCS top ten in three years. Glad we could save you the trouble of watching the games, or of showing you the five biggest disappointments, because Brian’s already got that. Tommy Tuberville is in fucking trouble. Underline that: oh-for-seven in-state against Saban. The big get for Alabama was Julio Jones, the phenomenal Alabama wideout who adopted a vow of silence leading up to his recruitment. Jones announced on ESPNU with an admirable lack of fanfare: walked in, thanked people, put on a hat, and then shut up and left. The gloating may begin for Alabama fans, who claim their 363rd national title and can begin letting everyone know about their heaping pile of recruiting awesome, starting with their leader’s Ari Goldian celebration.
Miami, too, can only begin to express their glee in the form of gif animation No better summary of Miami’s triumphant day at the races can be found than the Great Barstoolio’s recruiting diary, a gif-strewn litany of recruiting exultation from start to finish. If you were to tell us that she was up at 4:45 a.m. waiting by the fax machine like Pete Carroll, we would not have been surprised, though she would have been listening to Rick Ross instead of the Who, what with being a Miami fan and all. Randy Shannon truly was a shoplifting seagull yesterday, walking into Miami Northwestern and taking all the chips he liked. Yes, he made it up. All of it. Terrelle Pryor is still standing at the Starbucks. No, go ahead ma’am. He’s not sure what he wants, actually…there’s just so many…choices…. |

Eh, Auburn signed an adequate class I think. And since they’ve generally done better than Alabama in recent years they should make it seven in a row this season. Eight or nine looks possible. And if Saban does lose a couple of more in a row to Auburn I don’t think he’d be there long enough to fix things. Not that I really expected him to be there long enough to fix things anyway.

Do we crown Bama now for their [mythical] 13th National Championship? It’s about as valid as half of the ones they claim. Too bad for the boy in Tuscaloser that the proof is played out on the field, because they seem so pleased to gleefully celebrate the paper one now.
No matter. 0-7 won’t stop 7-0, and even 8 or 9-0 might prove troubling to avoid. By then, Saban will be about as welcome as a fart in church. Tide coaches don’t last very long when they lose concecutive Iron Bowls. If you don’t believe me, just ask Bill Curry or Mike Shula.

Yeah, Tennessee fans shouldn’t be concerned about JPW having another 32 of 46, 363 yards, 3 TD’s, No INT’s performance now that he has Julio. Not at all. I’m no JPW apologist, but any QB can look good when the Offensive line hands out a beating like Tennessee’s Defensive line took that day.

I want all the fans of other schools to stop and think about a few things. You get raped by the ncaa because of the actions of a few assclowns who are not even alumnus of your beloved University. You hire a snake in the grass, who bolts when the winds of change shift. Your next hire is a guy so out of his league, he thinks no one will notice the strip joint tips placed on the UA credit card. Then you get a guy who was a great player, but as evidenced by his deer-in-the -headlight look @ press conferences, is no where near ready to head the ship @ a major university. All this time, your instate rival is tapping that ass for ya (as they should have). How the fuck would you act, if after all that, you get a guy who has a ring..and that gets talent that USC is chasing? Honestly, how the fuck would you feel today as a fan?

I think all Alabama fan is (or should be) saying is don’t be suprised when you see us in a BCS game in 2 years.

And Futbawl, Julio will be catching passes from JP for one year. Jesus, CJ had to catch passes from Reggie Ball. Hopefully McElwain can help JP’s last year be much more like 06 than 07.

As opposed to what? Losing games 78-73, and the annual slaughter by the ‘Horns? If oxygen has hit Lubbock, you’d know that McElwain runs a balanced, vertical offense, with some spread elements. So yes, he’ll be blocking, but his blocking is partially why he’s the #1 receiver in the country.
“Guess Julio wanted to be the “#1 WR” right away, instead of catching 80-100 passes per season.” -RR
Bullshit. You know damned good and well, he’d dominate Crabtree’s lithe little ass, and be the #1 by October.

Steve says:
Biggus,
If he’s going to get top recruiting classes for the next three years, I’m pretty sure that we’ll be loaded enough that even Tommy Tubberville could win a national championship here.
Regardless of what he does, we will be better off when he leaves than when he arrived. Having said that, I don’t see him leaving. No one is going to pay him more money, and if he does leave this time, people will be extremely suspect of hiring him with the understanding that he may leave after a year or two.
Of course, with Auburn logic, you got a better recruiting class because Ears gets more talent out of his players.
Remember, you just can’t polish a turd, no matter how much spit you use.

Biggus Rickus says:
Steve,
Point is that if he loses to Auburn again in ‘08 with something like an 8-4 season the rumblings will start and he won’t sign the same kind of class. Lose for a third straight time and go 8-4 again in ‘09 and he’s gone, one way or another, I’m guessing. And God help him if he has another 6-6 season.

Biggus,
The talent in the state of Alabama is going to be very good again next year. And Saban proved with this class that he’s going to out work Tubs on the recruiting trail, and you know, not go duck hunting during prime recruiting time. So even if Bama goes 8-4, which is not a bad prediction with the schedule, I say he gets another top 5 class next year.

biggus rickus, we’re all very proud of you for making such a bold prediction “saban wont stay long”. you really went out on a limb there bud, way to buck the conventional wisdom that was being espoused by oh, 999,999 media types for every 1 million.
the part about the saban hatin’ that bothers me most, is how people have completed distorted what actually happeded. I was re-watching the bowl game last weekened and couldn’t help but notice bob davie and the other jagoff complete mis-represent what happened when he left miami. “there were a lot of hurt feelings… there’s still a lot of acrimony… it was pretty continuous” what did wayne huizinga say? what did his palyers say? the ownership and players were fine with it. it was a-holles who need topics to rant about on the radio who took ooffense and who had “hurt feelings” well fuck them. saban acted ethically and did not lie to his team. he told the media what had to while the season was going on.

Huh, so I’m being lumped in with radio guys who had to audacity to hate on Nick Saban? I don’t mind coaches leaving one job for another. Hell, I even defended Petrino ditching the Falcons before the season was up. I just wouldn’t expect him to hang around long if my program of choice had hired him. Honestly, I would say Saban would stay for a while if he was coaching any other team, but I can’t see him sticking it out with a largely unrealistic and crazy-ass fanbase. And I’m not too worried about Bama fucking Georgia up. Eloquent, by the way.
