You joke with the SEC/Big Ten comparision, but I’m pretty sure that was at least a factor in the crowd being 90% pro-Giants in the Atlanta sports bar where I watched the game. I had several conversations where one of us mentioned we’d never pulled for a NY franchise in a big game in our lives, yet everyone was jumping up and down and screaming like their team had won the SEC/BCS title game when the Giants retook the lead.
Not sure if it is true nationally, but I’ve never seen a super franchise that is as hated as the Belichek/Brady Patriots are around here.
