TEN MOMENTS OF MALICOUS FATE: NUMBER 1A
We completely botched our list of moments of malicious fate yesterday by not including the blunderous monstrosity of not only not covering the 28 point spread over a 4-7 team, but losing your shot at a national title to Dave Wannstedt…at home. How we’d forgotten the football expression of hitting yourself in the balls with a taser we’ll never know–caffeine? Brain tumor? Distracted by a particularly striking piece of lint floating in the sunlight? It could have been anything, but no matter–it was an inexcusable oversight on our part.
We present West Virginia losing to Pitt in their last game of the regular season versus the Wannstache, a 13-9 loss that–did we mention this yet?–cost them a shot at the national title. Pitt was ready to ride, dawg!
We apologize for the error.

I’m guessing the number of death threats sent to the kicker easily covered the over.

That is what you get for trying to decimalize misery when it comes in idiosyncratic groupings better suited to furlongs.

#2 team in the nation going into the final week? Check.
Lost to a mediocre conference opponent earlier, but is now right back in the thick of it? Check.
Sure invitation to the NC game on the line? Check.
Huge favorite in the final game against their most hated rival? Check.
Previously unstoppable offense suddenly unable to get anything started? Check.
13-9 loss, goodbye NC dreams? Check.
Watching that damn WVU-Pitt game gave me horrible flashbacks like none other.

#3: USF was mediocre? They beat the 2007 Auburn Tigers, the best team in the history of college football.

You also forgot to mention cherry on top of their misery – that loss also cost them their headcoach to Michigan.
So, really, that loss cost them a shot at the title, shot Pat White’s hopes for Heisman votes, and cost them their coach. And by sending LSU to the title game, it also cost Les Miles his dream job. That is a lot of misery from one game, specifically one sprained thumb.

Yeh, but ya gotta think, had Rich stayed put, and the drum of the Michigan job banging louder for Miles, would he have won that MNC game, then promptly haul ass to Michigan? Win or Lose?
The Wannastache was responsible for at least 10 story lines out of that one game, which is a weird kinda awesome….

I’m glad RR is at Michigan, but I’m still not glad we lost that game. You’re an asshole for even posting this Orson. Well, you’re not really an asshole, but you did just make me cry. Again.
Oh well, at least we can run more than 4 plays!!

#8 – either you didn’t watch the game, or don’t understand what happened. “One sprained thumb” is about the worst oversimplification i’ve ever heard. He played over 3/4 of the offensive snaps, yet only the BACKUP QB was able to get into the endzone after a weak personal foul penalty. He was inneffective the entire time he was in the game – even when healthy. Pitt was hammered by corrupt officials – that’s the only thing that kept the game within reach – otherwise it’s 20-7 and Pitt is running out the clock. They were dominated by the ‘Stache. Game over.

Auburn committed 6 turnovers and had a bunch of penalties, USF was not the better team. Now we see what happens w/o all those mistakes by the opposing team. Although USF played inspired football.

WVU lost because they were missing their QB for 1/4 of the game? You realize Pitt had their 3rd string QB in for the whole game, right?
