Dennis Dixon: Man, I can’t believe this. Heisman. Shot at the National title game. A possibility of finishing out a dominant season with a Pac-10 championship and going to New Orleans. Finally putting Oregon over the top. God, I can’t wait to get this pass off–

Unmistakably cruel and random? Check all the boxes. This one’s a perfect ten.
Number One’s coming, and it’s not App State. App State didn’t cost Michigan a national title shot. You can’t blame a lion for eating you when you’re wearing–yup–baconpants. This one’s actually worse.

Talking of cruel fate, it doesn’t get much better than AU hitting the game winner against FL, twice. If that wasn’t fate, I don’t know what is.
I would say the image of the LSU DL engulfing Boekman in the MNCG is right up there, too.

It has got to be Pat White injuring his thumb against Pitt – not only did W-f’ing-VU lose to their bitter rival, it cost them a shot at the MNC and probably their coach. If WVU beats Pitt, no way does Rich Rod leave for Michigan.

Note that Oregon lost several games due to their QB injury, whereas WfVU still got to a BCS game.
I say this still beats White’s injury.

#26 – I personally agree with you that this should be #1. I watched this game and I actually threw up a little bit in my mouth when Dixon’s knee went the other way. That stuff creeps me out.

As an Oregon fan seeing this over and over again is a killer. My one argument for this being number #1 is that USC was still going to lose to Oregon and still lose the Pac-10 if Dixon stayed healthy.

#31) I don’t know about that. I’m a USC fan but I’ve said before that Oregon with Dixon was the best team I saw all year. Without him the Ducks folded. The team that lost to Arizona and was shut out by UCLA would never have beaten USC.

Yes, without Dixon USC would have won, and I wasn’t trying to say anything different. My point was that the logic behind #1 was that losing to Stanford derailed a national title shot, but my point is #2 was a much worse twist of fate because even if USC had beat Stanford, by the time of the Oregon-Arizona game (the crossroads of #2), USC was still not only not getting a title shot, they were still down in the Pac-10 hunt. Thus, I’m saying #1 only became tragic BECAUSE of #2, because without Dixon going down, losing to Stanford would ultimately have had no national title significance.

I still don’t really agree though. I see your point and after USC lost to Oregon I was hoping for Oregon to run the table and open up the Rose bowl slot for USC.
I can’t say I felt nearly as much pain over Dixon’s injury as I did the effects of the one to JD Booty.
Another point in favor of USC/Stanford being #1 is that this is the second year in a row that a fluke loss to an inferior team cost USC a slot in the BCS title game.
