THE TEN MOMENTS OF PURE MALICIOUS FATE, 2007: CRUELTY, INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED
Sometimes the wolves attack in pairs. Sometimes in packs. Either way, they're coming. Here's number two in our ongoing list of endlessly painful moments from 2007.
Dennis Dixon: Man, I can't believe this. Heisman. Shot at the National title game. A possibility of finishing out a dominant season with a Pac-10 championship and going to New Orleans. Finally putting Oregon over the top. God, I can't wait to get this pass off--
Knee: So sorry. Other plans. (POP!)
Unmistakably cruel and random? Check all the boxes. This one's a perfect ten.
Number One's coming, and it's not App State. App State didn't cost Michigan a national title shot. You can't blame a lion for eating you when you're wearing--yup--baconpants. This one's actually worse.

F- SEC speed and LSU backing its ugly self to the MNC trophies….the PAC 10 has the top three spots on this list! Yeah baby!

Better not be the academies beating ND this year as No. 1.

I’ll say this…although it doesn’t deserve to be number one, I think it’s negligence that John Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson’s 108 yard pick six against Mississippi State isn’t somewhere in here.

Lesticle-licious TD pass against Auburn with 5 seconds left?
Parker Wilson’s OT heave against Arkansas?

pete, you are supposed to proclaim it in such a manner that will relate to all the keen understanding you desire to have marital relations with the swine itself.

This ought to be #0. I can’t imagine a crueler twist of fate than this. USC-Stanford was entirely self-inflicted, for example. This was just getting shit on.

- has got to be given to the Big 10….given their overall ineptitude. Meetchicken is #1.

- - If this were the 10 stupidiest plays, that would have to be in there. My 12 year old knows better than to throw that pass. Not sure it really fits this category….

It is amazing that the fucklion did not get to said baconpants prior to App and Oregon.
You would think lions enjoy all varieties of pig, including living and fried in a skillet.

Talking of cruel fate, it doesn’t get much better than AU hitting the game winner against FL, twice. If that wasn’t fate, I don’t know what is.
I would say the image of the LSU DL engulfing Boekman in the MNCG is right up there, too.

Thanks for not putting us (App State) #1 Orson.
It’s not a cruel twist of fate when the team that suffers it turns out to really just not be that good.

#17….
Didn’t Michigan beat FLORIDA in their bowl game?
by aventius on Jan 10, 2008 4:29 PM EST reply actions
It has got to be Pat White injuring his thumb against Pitt – not only did W-f’ing-VU lose to their bitter rival, it cost them a shot at the MNC and probably their coach. If WVU beats Pitt, no way does Rich Rod leave for Michigan.

- - surprised it took that long for someone to say it. gotta be the ’eers
by Ryan on Jan 10, 2008 4:34 PM EST reply actions
Note that Oregon lost several games due to their QB injury, whereas WfVU still got to a BCS game.
I say this still beats White’s injury.

Orson – I think you are just withholding Michigan’s due ridicule and scorn out of spite. It is not our fault that Reggie Nelson wasn’t playing safety.
by maskedavenger on Jan 10, 2008 4:45 PM EST reply actions
And, of course, Oregon also lost to their bitter rival due to their QB injury.

Gotta believe it’s USC losing to a 41-point dog led by the backup QB at home on a last second pass.

- - I personally agree with you that this should be #1. I watched this game and I actually threw up a little bit in my mouth when Dixon’s knee went the other way. That stuff creeps me out.
by Berdingo on Jan 10, 2008 4:50 PM EST reply actions
As an Oregon fan seeing this over and over again is a killer. My one argument for this being number #1 is that USC was still going to lose to Oregon and still lose the Pac-10 if Dixon stayed healthy.
by Joe Patrice on Jan 10, 2008 4:50 PM EST reply actions
- I don’t know about that. I’m a USC fan but I’ve said before that Oregon with Dixon was the best team I saw all year. Without him the Ducks folded. The team that lost to Arizona and was shut out by UCLA would never have beaten USC.

33, you might want to re-read 31. I don’t think he suggested anything to the contrary.
by Erik on Jan 10, 2008 6:00 PM EST reply actions
Yes, without Dixon USC would have won, and I wasn’t trying to say anything different. My point was that the logic behind #1 was that losing to Stanford derailed a national title shot, but my point is #2 was a much worse twist of fate because even if USC had beat Stanford, by the time of the Oregon-Arizona game (the crossroads of #2), USC was still not only not getting a title shot, they were still down in the Pac-10 hunt. Thus, I’m saying #1 only became tragic BECAUSE of #2, because without Dixon going down, losing to Stanford would ultimately have had no national title significance.
by Joe on Jan 10, 2008 6:35 PM EST reply actions
Eric and Joe: My bad, I did misread that.
I still don’t really agree though. I see your point and after USC lost to Oregon I was hoping for Oregon to run the table and open up the Rose bowl slot for USC.
I can’t say I felt nearly as much pain over Dixon’s injury as I did the effects of the one to JD Booty.
Another point in favor of USC/Stanford being #1 is that this is the second year in a row that a fluke loss to an inferior team cost USC a slot in the BCS title game.
