If only THREE plays had ended differently, it would have been 24-31. If only FOUR plays had ended differently, it would have been 24-38. If only FIVE plays had ended differently..........

The problem with putting the WVU-Pitt game up there is that there isn't one moment where it all went from "yay title game!" to "oh fuck". Was it a disaster? Sure ... but there's no single moment you can point to and say that's where it turned.

I think that more devistating than the Ga win over Ala (after all look where Ga ended up) was the overtime Tenn win over SC. Of course, as a SC fan, I am glad that you didn't have that up there. After coming back from a 21-0 deficit, we allow a HUGE kick-off return and a field goal to take it to overtime. Then miss the field goal in overtime to lose the game. Not only that, it set the tone for a 5 game losing streak that not only knocked us out of the rankings, but out of a bowl trip. I hope that some one sticks a red-hot poker through my ear and burns out the synapse that storing that memory.

Ah whatever. I watched that Stanford game unfold in all its sickly glory and was convinced it was a lost cause in the third quarter.

After all, this was the same USC team who had spotted Washington almost as many yards in penalties as Washington had been able to scrape on offense after all.

Malicious fate? More like "it was going to happen eventually" given the early to mid-season issues for the team.

Doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the bunda palate cleanser, however.

i liked the “TOUCHDOWN USC!!! err… stanford” call, myself.

When I was watching this game, the satellite and/or TiVo wigged out, freezing the video around 3rd down. All I had was audio. I heard “Touchdown USC!” and was rightly confused.

Pitt beating West Virgnia was way worse than this. It at least deserves a spot in the top 5.
You're a 28.5 point favorite against your unranked rival... PITT. You're number 2 in the country and half your fanbase has already bought non-refundable travel packages to new orleans for the championship game.
Suddenly, injury. Your QB dislocates his thumb. You start to choke and get dominated by the PITT defense. After you lose the game, Michigan steals your coach, who decides he won't coach the Fiesta Bowl against OKLAHOMA.

I know if I were a WVU fan, I would've cried.

I know this series was about individual moments, but the most painful turn of fate had to be West Virginia losing to Pitt.

--It's your biggest rival, and you lost. Oh, and you were 10-1 and they were 4-7.
--It keeps you out of the national title game, depriving you of the chance of announcing yourself as a major player for good and providing validation for your conference.
--As it turns out, being in the national title game was probably the only thing you could have done to prevent your beloved, hometown hero head coach from bolting for Michigan.

Not even USC's loss to Stanford was that bad, because of USC's high standing in the college football pantheon. Plus, Pete Carroll isn't going anywhere.
