He wants to take him to a gay bar. For some reason, Pete Carroll is allegedly going to talk to Arthur Blank about the Falcons job this coming Wednesday, perhaps out of pure courtesy, perhaps because for some reason he wants to leave college football heaven and unparalleled success for the shitheap of the Atlanta Falcons. And the reason he would want to do that is unfathomable, unless somewhere in Pete Carroll’s defensive brain lurks a glowing, undying shred of moron. Or perhaps Arthur Blank simply wants to take him to a gay bar, and has something to put into Carroll–like the spiked butt plug of two 4 win seasons before a flaming return to the college game or a turn in the broadcast booth.
We really just wanted to shoehorn the song “Gay Bar” into the blog this morning. It’s so damn perky. Anyway, watch for SEC fans to chant “S-E-C! S-E-C!” if this does somehow transpire under the mistaken impression that the Falcons are, in fact, the Sunday post-game practice sessions of the Georgia Bulldogs. (Scratch that–UGA might have won five games in the NFL this season.) A booster offered the Washington AD $100K to fire Ty Willingham. We wish we could have done this, but thirty seven dollars and some serious Delta Skymiles were all we had to offer to get [NAME REDACTED] fired in 2003. John L. Smith is interested in the Hawaii job, and thinks he’d be just a peachy fit. “With 18 years of collegiate head coaching experience and over 130 wins, I would hope that would qualify me as a candidate to be the next head coach at the University of Hawaii,” Smith said in a telephone interview from his home in Louisville. He missed the obvious opportunity to send them promotional t-shirts that read “John L. Smith: Coaching So Good You’ll Slap Yourself.”
Stan Drayton will be the next running backs coach at Tennessee, thanks to the fact that at his previous job in Florida, the job of running backs coach didn’t involve coaching anyone who played in the offense. Drayton also noted that one of the factors in his decision to leave Florida dealt with the limited role of the running back in Meyer’s spread option offense. “If you’re going to be a running backs coach, you want to be part of a system that involves the running back,” Drayton said. It’s difficult to argue against the move. Florida will also have a second open slot on the coaching staff as Doc Holliday takes his tubercular recruiting genius back home to West Virginia to become the defensive coordinator for Bill Stewart’s new staff. As nice as it was to have Holliday on staff at Florida, losing him to West Virginia was only a matter of time: he spent 20 years on Don Nehlen’s staff in Morgantown and is a native of the state. ATMs gave Kansas no respect in the Orange Bowl, according to Bully for Old Mizzourah. |

Who needs running backs when you have a rainbow shitting Hammer of Thor and a wide receiver faster than most cheetahs (I have not ruled out gene splicing)? Running backs at Florida are good for two things, taking a few hits for Tebow and fumbling.

while carroll staying seems as obvious to me as the next guy, the one little thing that nags at me is this observation on the situation at USC which was penned in october.
if it is realistic to think that usc has peaked (which i’m not at all ready to admit, although smq has some very good points for the argument), then it is clearly in carroll’s best interest to move on while his stock is still high.
the falcons make sense because if the petrino affair taught us anything, is that the job can be parlayed into a quality ncaa coaching spot after at least one year. (the falcons don’t make sense in the fact that blank sure as hell ain’t gonna allow a lotta wiggle room to get out of the contract if things don’t go as planned in ‘08)

What a nice piece of dishonesty from Drayton…maybe if his running backs had produced they’d have been more involved in the offense. I don’t really think that Meyer wants Tebow or Harvin to be his primary runners — he just wants someone who he can trust to get 4 yards and not fumble; he’s not looking for Barry Sanders, just Jacob Hester. It’s a good pickup for UT from a recruiting point of view, but as far as coaching goes, they can have him.

baconboy,
I’ve read a lot of arguments about Jancek (UGA’s LB coach) that sounded exactly like that. It’s amazing how much better the linebackers were when they were actually talented. My take is that Florida’s running backs simply aren’t very good. Although, I never understood why Moore was playing over the short/fast guy. He’s built pretty solid and I didn’t notice him fumbling on the few carries he had.

I can’t fathom Petey leaving U$C unless there was a clear threat of NCAA sanctions over the Reggie Bush agent/housing mess. Since it doesn’t appear that is the case, I think it is just a courtesy to Arthur Blank and a way for U$C to put a little something extra in Petey’s envelope this year. Since I live here in Atlanta, I will assure you that the apathy for the Falcons is at its highest point ever. Atlanta is a transient city to begin with and allegiance was sketchy at best before. Now the only reason to go to the games is to see the opposing team.

While I think Carroll would be a fool to take the Atlanta job, let’s remember that he spent 15 years in the NFL as an assistant or head coach. And while his record wasn’t fantastic at 33-31, he’s already proven he can be reasonably successful there — more so than Saban or Spurrier. So I don’t think it makes sense to treat him as if he’s just some college coach trying to jump to the pros to give it a shot — he knows the pro game and what it takes to succeed there.
Will — someone could also ask who was the last NFL coach, other than Carroll, to jump to the colleges and be successful. Just ask the fans in South Bend and Pittsburgh…

Next season you have Emanuel Moody and a host of former 4 star scat back, elusive types in your backfield. Let’s see how much you use your TBs next season.
I don’t know whether it’s been you have not been developing talent in the backfield or Meyer does not really utilize them, and I am certain someone will argue that Utah or BG had some 1,000 yard rusher or even two in the same season, but next season Florida will have no excuses and will be choosing to have Tebow run the ball 20 times a game.
I still look for Brantley to beat out Newtwon for the role of backup QB by Labor Day.

Coop, the one advantage to having Tebow run is that he gets an extra blocker from it, whereas a running back doesn’t. So some of it comes down to the O-line. You may be right about next year, but I do think that Meyer knows he can’t run Tebow 20+ times a game. Hopefully Moody will be as productive as he was at USC.
Still, I think Drayton could have done better — he’s been here three years and we haven’t had a running back we could count on. Some of that has to come down to coaching.

Kleph: Interesting article by SMQ, I missed it when it came out. Obviously the symmetry he pointed out has broken down since October since Miami’s Peach Bowl loss and final ranking of 17th does not mirror a Rose Bowl win and final ranking of 2 or 3.
It takes a luck to win a MNC. USC got the breaks in 2003 and 2004. If Lendale White makes another few inches on 4th down in 2005 or Vince Young is stopped on his 4th down play, then USC would have won it in 2005. In 2006 if either Booty’s 2 point conversion at OSU or the tipped interception at UCLA didn’t happen it would have been USC crushing Ohio State in 2006. This year if Booty hadn’t broken his finger against Stanford OR Carroll had taken him out sooner OR USC got some points out of 4th and short OR stopped Stanford on 4th and 20 OR stopped Stanford on 4th and 9 then iUSC would have gotten another shot in the title game this year.
So I don’t see a big drop off between 2003 and 2007, just some evening out of the luck.

Coop says:
The thing is, BB, the RBs coach does the least amount of coaching on the staff. He really has less responsibilities than the WR coach, when you think about it.
Basically, the RB coach teaches blocking schemes to the RBs, and sharpens up their pass catching skills for programs that warrant it, and that is it, because you aren’t going to be teaching a RB at Florida how to, “hit the hole.”
Therefore, I never really blame or praise any RB coach for a lack of, or surplus of, running yardage. I focus on the OL coach and the OC.
These kids would not be there if they was not successful runners in high school, as RB is not a position where the player played a different position like QB, LB, etc in high school, or at least the player played both positions with RB being his priority position.
Thus, who do you make your RB coach, if you are smart?
You do what Pat Dye, then Phil Fulmer, then Jim Donnan, then Mark Richt did and put Rodney Garner there. A guy who is not necessarily a coaching “tactician” but a guy who can recruit.
Your star recruiter, basically, b/c his other job duties are, shall we say, “non strenuous.”
Granted, Florida has had several big recruiters under Meyer, and it warms my hear to see Holliday go as well, as he will get NC State type Florida talent under Amato at WVa, instead of Florida type Florida talent.
But, basically all Drayton was, and all Meyer is looking for, is a guy who can recruit.
His own Rodney Garner.

@coop and @ biggus rickus
I used to think the RB coach was a useless position, but listening to Croom, a former RB coach in the pros wax critically on RB performance changed that view.
Croom talks of the aforementioned blocking schemes and pass catching, but also footwork and reads…lots and lots of reads. Reading the LB’s and Guards. Using the correct footwork to set self up for cuts. Then you watch the RB’s in the game under that guise and it changes your viewpoint somewhat.
Also Drayton coached at MSU before Florida, I think Croom did most of the coaching then too.

He’s “AHC” for the resume padder and the raise so Richt can keep him around, while not really have him do anything but recruit, or at least that held water while Garner was a TE coach all these years.
Glad to see Garner has some legitimate responsibility now.
However, a TE coach? One position that could easily be handled by the OL coach and/or WR coach, and at most schools it is.
In other words, they were giving him something to do for a reason.
But, I was wrong about him being a RB coach, giving him too much credit as other schools made up a position for him, essentially.
Not really speaking in code anymore, are we?

I don’t know how involved he was in coaching any of the position spots he had prior to Georgia, and I know the AHC designation was to keep him in Athens, but if he’s been involved heavily with the defensive line since ‘98 (and I tend to think he has) he’s done a good job at that position. So not all great recruiters are only that.

Also, I’m disappointed that I didn’t see the other famous JLS clip from that era, “THE PLAYERS ARE PLAYING THEIR TAILS OFF, AND THE COACHES ARE SCREWING IT UP!”

Regarding JLS to Hawaii: I think the fight there was more with June Jones than the program itself. Yes, it’s a hellish trip, and the legendarily bad officiating didn’t make matters any better. (It was ‘04, for the record, and Hawaii needed to win its last two games against NW and MSU to be bowl-eligible; those two teams combined for nearly 40 penalties and at least three long TDs called back.) I think the real spark was the ‘05 return game, when we were beating the hell out of them and one of their guys took a cheap shot at Stanton (followed by a June Jones postgame quote defending his player).

I don’t see that changing with the current crop of young players in place. But then again I’m sure Miami fans thought they could stay on top as well.
If Carroll stays at USC, I think that Florida State under Bowden might provide a better comparison. It is possilbe to have a long run of very good years.
