DUDE: THE TITLE GAME.

Dude. Title game. Join us for the liveblog over at the Sporting Blog, featuring quarter by quarter updates from bars full of Ohio State and LSU fans. We’re doing the watching in that order precisely to avoid getting killed as a Florida fan and to avoid pepper spray. That shit feels like you inhaled a bushel of tacks when it hits.

As big of a USC fan as I am, I’d vote Georgia No. 2. Both swamped inferior opponents in bowls. But, Georgia’s schedule was much tougher since Nebraska and Notre Dame sucked so much. Georgia’s run at the end of the regular season was a little more impressive, and though both have a bad loss and a decent loss, USC’s bad loss was much, much worse.

Big 10 can play with the SEC. It has been shown. OSU was in the game tonight. Hats off to LSU for their win. OSU had dumb penalties that gave LSU easy points.
Florida fans should stop gloating until they don’t get torched by a team that lost to Appalachian State.
Maybe Urban Meyer should stop showing up on halftime shows and consider going out and recruiting a defense.
Arkansas, Missouri just scored again.

It’s not that I care that much about the final polls. Just confused after watching 3 teams jump UGA after the final weekend of regular season games, and now everybody saying USC should jump them now. 7-2 in Bowls this year. Arkansas was the 6th best team matched against the Big 12 #2 team.
UF/Michigan was perhaps the closest matchup, and UF was at best the 4th best team in the SEC, and Michigan was beating tOSU away from being the Big 10 champs.

Yeah keep parsing your answers. The SEC didn’t win the title. LSU did. Florida and Arkansas got their asses handed to them. An Arkansas team that beat LSU. There is parity up and down all conferences.
Sadly the bowl game is the only time we get to check it out because Florida, Auburn, Georgia are never willing to travel out of the south for an out of conference schedule, so they end up playing a bunch of patsys.
C’mon Auburn, schedule Michigan or USC or Texas in your out of conference schedule. They are a little harder that Oklahoma State and Southern Florida.

Fowler hit the nail on the head.
The reason there isn’t a playoff is because the Big 10 and Pac 10 know what will happen – the SEC will win it most years. Tonight was just proof for them, and they will fight harder to hold off a playoff.
You had an ugly 2 loss SEC team – LSU – who by far was the ugliest SEC Champion in the last 6 years – beat the snot out of tOSU.
And as long as the Big 10 keeps a commish that fights this system, they will be a substandard conference. Winners want to play against the best. Without a playoff, the only time the Big 10 gets to play against the best is when they get Waxed in the BCS MNC game.

#361 – it’s hard to play Michigan when the Michigan AD turns down a home and home with Auburn.
AU has played USC, is playing Home and Home with WVU for the next 2 years and then playing home and home with Clemson.
Do you not think that UGA could’ve beaten tOSU tonight? I do.
The point is that the SEC’s IN CONFERENCE SCHEDULE is better than any one else’s whole schedule, OOC included. The OOC scheduling is a red fucking herring when you’re playing in the SEC week in and week out.
AU played LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Georgia, and Alabama in conference – 6 bowl teams – and USF out of conference – a 7th bowl team. We also played KSU – another BCS team. How many bowl teams did tOSU play in the regular season?
That’s why the OOC is a joke argument that your crap conferences use. “Yeah, well didn’t play the New England Patriots in New England and lost to in conference but we played on the road so we should go.”

Chas says:
360, as well they should.
The Big 10’s three bowl victories this season:
Purdue needed a last second field goal to beat Central Michigan, and got it thanks to the Chippewa’s kicker inexplicably kicking a soft pop fly on the last kickoff, practically starting the Boilermakers in fg range.
Penn State beat a lame duck Texas A&M squad, but to be fair, it’s certainly not JoePa’s fault that Excelsior! ran the Aggies into the ground.
Michigan, playing with the heart and intensity that they had lacked the entire regular season, circled the wagons and won one for the gipper.
So to summarize the Big 10 bowl season, you’ve got one legitimate victory by a team that talent-wise should have been playing in a much better bowl, one win over a lame duck, one last second victory over a MAC team, and five losses. But yeah, the Big 10 can play with the big boys. Whatever.
But hey, it could be worse for the Big 10. At least they’re still better than the ACC.

Aaahh, so you think that the two sets of fans who lost bowl games from the SEC are bragging about the SEC to make themselves feel better? Let see, as a Florida fan we’ve won a football national championship and two basketball national championships in the last two years — I don’t need anything to make me feel better. We all knew that after the run we’ve had that there was no place to go but down — for a while.
I’m not making the case for overall SEC superiority to make myself feel better, but because it makes the most sense.
In fact, you are the one who seems to be attacking the SEC, perhaps to make yourself feel better.

D-nice says:
I agree 374, but your argument really works this year in particular when the SEC was so strong.
The SEC isn’t the type of conference that will get “down” like the rest when it has an off year (meaning its off years will be better than other conferences off years), but it will have weaker years, and that’s when hiding behind ’strenght of conference scedule” is somewhat annoying if SEC teams are not playing quality out of conference games.
But, people do seem to forget, as your Auburn example shows, that some SEC teams actually do play some great non-conference games.

#378 – my team won it’s bowl game against the best defense in the ACC – and we were running an offense we spent 8 practices installing.
And I’m proud of LSU, because I know AU is on even keel with them. The AU-LSU games are nailbiters with the home team winning. LSU has had the breaks with regards to timing for it’s NC runs that AU hasn’t had, but I know we are competitive with them – even over the last 6 years.
Who in the Big 10 do you think is competitive with a team like the 2007 LSU Tigers, or 2006 Florida Gators, or 2004 Auburn Tigers, or 2003 LSU Tigers?
I can’t think of one. However, several teams in the SEC were competitive with each one of those teams in each of their years.

388 – this was a down year in the SEC.
LSU was just a good SEC team, not a great SEC team. They’ve got 2 conference losses and are the first 2 loss BCS MNC team. They’ll not be on any “Greatest Team Ever” lists, and will likely be a trivia question in 20 years when the next 2 loss team makes the MNC game.
That’s not to disrespect LSU, because most of us think that good SEC teams are better than most other conference’s great teams, and this year is yet another example of that.
