DUDE: THE TITLE GAME.

Dude. Title game. Join us for the liveblog over at the Sporting Blog, featuring quarter by quarter updates from bars full of Ohio State and LSU fans. We’re doing the watching in that order precisely to avoid getting killed as a Florida fan and to avoid pepper spray. That shit feels like you inhaled a bushel of tacks when it hits.

Whoever starts the SEC ’speed’ crap (either for the SEC or when a Big 10 player runs someone down from behind), will be subjected to a night of the Ralphie Treatment from Pam Ward.

And considering how weak their schedules are and how much they have returning, both will likely be ranked #1 and #2 and run the table.
I tell you, the main reason there isn’t a playoff is because an SEC team would win about 40% of the championships. That is why the Big 10 and Pac 10 refuse to participate in one. They know what a playoff looks like – it looks like LSU/UF/AU/Bama/UT/UGA hoisting trophies year in and year out.

App State could beat anyone in the Big Ten, outside of Ohio State. And yeah, they could probably take the lower half of the Top 25. What am I supposed to say? It was a terrible loss for us. I’m just proud we bucked up and ended up knocking off the defending champs in (what amounted to) their backyard to end the season.

Any speed difference is on the defensive line, not at the skill positions. The d-linemen in the SEC are strong and fast. It’s hard to prepare for that unless you see it regularly. The lack of that speed was what undid UF this year.

Given Georgia’s two losses and lack of division title and USC’s loss to Stanford (not to mention a schedule that while very good on paper at the beginning of the season, ended up being weak), I’m not sure they “deserved” to be in the title game. But, I would have loved to see Georgia or a healthy USC match up with LSU.
Most anti-climactic end of season ever.
Someone asked whether an undefeated OSU would even be invited to the NC game again.
But, also, will a 2 loss SEC champ ever be left out again? IMO, only if two teams have 0 or 1 loss AND a strong strenght of schedule.

Sadly the bowl game is the only time we get to check it out because Florida, Auburn, Georgia are never willing to travel out of the south for an out of conference schedule, so they end up playing a bunch of patsys.
C’mon Auburn, schedule Michigan or USC or Texas in your out of conference schedule. They are a little harder that Oklahoma State and Southern Florida.

The reason there isn’t a playoff is because the Big 10 and Pac 10 know what will happen – the SEC will win it most years. Tonight was just proof for them, and they will fight harder to hold off a playoff.
You had an ugly 2 loss SEC team – LSU – who by far was the ugliest SEC Champion in the last 6 years – beat the snot out of tOSU.
And as long as the Big 10 keeps a commish that fights this system, they will be a substandard conference. Winners want to play against the best. Without a playoff, the only time the Big 10 gets to play against the best is when they get Waxed in the BCS MNC game.

Do you not think that UGA could’ve beaten tOSU tonight? I do.
The point is that the SEC’s IN CONFERENCE SCHEDULE is better than any one else’s whole schedule, OOC included. The OOC scheduling is a red fucking herring when you’re playing in the SEC week in and week out.
AU played LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Georgia, and Alabama in conference – 6 bowl teams – and USF out of conference – a 7th bowl team. We also played KSU – another BCS team. How many bowl teams did tOSU play in the regular season?

360, as well they should.
The Big 10’s three bowl victories this season:
Purdue needed a last second field goal to beat Central Michigan, and got it thanks to the Chippewa’s kicker inexplicably kicking a soft pop fly on the last kickoff, practically starting the Boilermakers in fg range.
Penn State beat a lame duck Texas A&M squad, but to be fair, it’s certainly not JoePa’s fault that Excelsior! ran the Aggies into the ground.
Michigan, playing with the heart and intensity that they had lacked the entire regular season, circled the wagons and won one for the gipper.
So to summarize the Big 10 bowl season, you’ve got one legitimate victory by a team that talent-wise should have been playing in a much better bowl, one win over a lame duck, one last second victory over a MAC team, and five losses. But yeah, the Big 10 can play with the big boys. Whatever.
But hey, it could be worse for the Big 10. At least they’re still better than the ACC.

The SEC isn’t the type of conference that will get “down” like the rest when it has an off year (meaning its off years will be better than other conferences off years), but it will have weaker years, and that’s when hiding behind ’strenght of conference scedule” is somewhat annoying if SEC teams are not playing quality out of conference games.
But, people do seem to forget, as your Auburn example shows, that some SEC teams actually do play some great non-conference games.

Who in the Big 10 do you think is competitive with a team like the 2007 LSU Tigers, or 2006 Florida Gators, or 2004 Auburn Tigers, or 2003 LSU Tigers?

Usually it works, but years like this when Nebraska and ND suck, it doesn’t. Unlike OSU, we don’t have to drive very far to find tough competition.

But, their skill position players really started to come around.
I can see them making a NC run or going 9-3 with a couple too-close-for-comfort wins within those 9, depending on who steps up and how fast they gel.

The point I believe most of the SEC posters are trying to make is that the tests that a team like LSU (or UF last season) faces week in and week out in the SEC better prepares them for a big game than the weaker schedule a team like OSU plays.
Other than the loss to Illinois, only one team came within 10 points of tOSU this season. When you aren’t tested, you won’t get better. It’s not that tOSU isn’t a great team, they just weren’t as prepared to play a full game as LSU was.

I love all of the over analyzing…it was pretty simple from where I watched the game last night that it basically boiled down to what all big time games boil down to…who tackles the best, plays penalty/mistake free, and who doesn’t turn the ball over.
Of course 1 team being better than the other team can directly affect turnovers, tackling, and penalties, but let’s all be honest here, LSU had 1 penalty in the 4th quarter, and 1 turnover late in the game when it wasn’t really close.
There were plays to be made against LSU. Ohio State held them to a season low offensive yardage and out gained them.
5 personal foul penalties, a dropped touchdown pass that turned into a blocked field goal, and the missed blocked punt all killed any kind of momentum.
All in all, it sucks to lose to an SEC team because of the obnoxious fan base and really that is the only reason I hate it. I have no problem giving LSU and Florida credit, but it’s listening to random Alabama talk shit that drives me nuts.
If winning a National Championship every year was really easy, there would be a program out there doing it every year like Nebraska in the 90’s. It takes a special group of individuals to makeup the right team chemistry and talent to pull it off….especially given our system.

The Big 10 was amazingly average this year, and Ohio State was predictably unprepared to face a truly good team because of it. Aside from the defensive line I really didn’t see much of a talent gap. The problem was that Ohio State melted under the pressure. Possibly, that’s due to youth, or it may be due to having no experience against equal or better opponents.

I honestly could see only a couple teams from around the country being able to compete in the SEC. USC and West Virginia are the only two teams that I have watched all year that had the speed and consistent playmaking ability to survive in that conference. Before Dixon went down, I would have added Oregon to that group. Before Cal quit in mid October, I would have added them to that mix as well.

PW summed it up the best, as did Biggus……its true the SEC is a tougher conference, which when the SEC champ is crowned, they earned it….by a trial by fire, which means learning as a team to come from behind in close games in toughest enviroments…and overcoming injuries and adversity…I dont think tOSU had the schedule to prep them….and you dont earn your stripes by playing one tough opponent in a injured Michigan team….hell LSU won its conf champ. with their back up QB, and depth is another thing, LSU was just deeper in personnel…..tOSU just wasnt battle tested enough, kinda like the French in Vietnam….
LSU gets punched in the mouth, tells tOSU after they go up 10-0….”Hey, thats a pretty good right hook ya got there” as they pick themselves up off the mat, then proceed to punch tOSU in the mouth, the gut, kick em in the groin, stomp on their toes, gouge their eyes out then headbutt them, then place them in the Fiquere 4 til they tap out…….then carry them to the turnbuckle and throw them out of the ring and thru the announcers table……for the second year in a row…..
