THE WEEKEND PLUS: NOLA OLA AY
The Sporting News just read that homicide rates went up by thirty percent in 2007 there, so they’re sending us to New Orleans to cover the crowd and buildup to the national title game. So for the weekend you’ll find us over at the Sporting Blog, where we’ll be posting updates, photos, and hopefully pictures of drunk people fightin’ round the world on Bourbon Street.
If you are going to the game please send us an email at harumphharumph of the gmail variety. We’re looking to hang out with tailgaters from LSU, OSU, and anyone else who shows up to the Superdome. Not that you’ll need any, but we’ll buy you beer. Or you’ll buy us beer. Or we’ll just forget the whole thing and go straight to the ether and absinthe.
And now, Professor Longhair singing and playing “She Ain’t Got No Hair.” Enjoy your weekend

Not to worry Pelican Pants, I am staying home for the game. After being told by the guy working the checkout line at my local Blockbuster, upon seeing my Ohio State hat and sweatshirt, that Ohio State doesn’t stand a chance and that LSU is going to beat Ohio State worse than Florida did last year because LSU this year is a better team than Florida last year and Ohio State this year is worse (even though Ted Ginn only played 1 down, Troy Smith came in 30 pounds overweight from the Heisman banquet tour, and Beanie Wells is a better back than Antonio Pittman), I decided to stay home and spare myself the expense of watching a massacre in person.
The funny thing about this guy, he was an older gentleman, is that he had knew all of the typical SEC arguments to a T. What’s even funnier is that I knew what he was going to say before he said it.
For example: I said, Michigan looked pretty good against Florida. I knew he would say, “if that Michigan team played Ohio State, Ohio State would have lost.” He did. I said, Florida is 2-4 in the last 6 games against the Big Ten and the Big Ten is 12-12 against the SEC in the BCS era. I knew he would say, “yeah but that doesn’t mean anything, if Michigan or any Big Ten team played an SEC schedule it would be different, it’s one thing to get a win in bowl, but when you gotta go up against that SEC schedule week in and week out, it’s just tougher.” He did–that is my personal favorite by the way. Then he threw it at me that all of the big time programs don’t play anyone OOC and their conference schedules are weak compared to the SEC’s. I told him that USC plays tOSU and Virginia to start the season then every team in the Pac 10…”that ain’t nothin’.” I asked him if Western Kentucky, ULM, Duke, and all the other patsy teams that Alabama schedules OOC are tougher…he gave me the typical, but they play an SEC schedule…lol. The funniest part is that all of you sound the same, you have the same standard excuses/arguments, you say the same things over and over again, and all of it is so narrow-minded and short-sighted that it is amazing that you acknowledge that any other conference or team even exists, much less might be as good as or better than your beloved SEC.
Bear in mind this guy was in his 50’s and he was “giving me the business” because I had an Ohio State hat and shirt on…lol. We talked for a few more minutes and he gave me all the other SEC company lines, SEC speed, SEC defense, SEC recruitin’, etc. I tried to tell him that there is a very big possibility that Florida’s dominating win over Ohio State might be the exception to the rule, not the rule when it comes to the bowl games….big ten vs. sec.
I just remember walking out of Blockbuster and telling myself, man, that guy is totally clueless…his SEC pride has clearly altered his ability to think rationally.
Oh yeah, he’s not an LSU fan either, but he’s gotta root for the good old SEC…

So, would you say this years Buckeye team is better than last years? Who would you say was a better team for the SEC? Last years Fla team or this years LSU team, talent wise? or who is the better coach-Meyer or Les Miles?….I have revised my thinking on this game from post way back when….I think since Pellini is leaving, his game plan will be scatterbrained, and I think the way tOSU wins this game is ball control and on a last minute field goal, LSU if they are to win, it has to be jumping out by turning their offense loose using all their weapons to a early lead and taking the run game and Beanie Wells out of the equation since the teams that seem to play LSU tuff had success in running the ball , then passing …(I never thought their secondary was all world after the KY game, and they run a conventional offense which favors tOSU defense)

Mr Pelican Pants says:
And TAFKATOSUB,
IF your tOSU doesnt win this game, it doesnt bode well for tOSU in future bowl games, it will have a Stoops-esque curse on that team…….
But if they pull a win out, they will have put the blueprint on how to beat the BCS system to get the MNC game….I dont think you want to name drop OOC games around…. if your a good team playing a weak schedule and can avoid all the trap games and pitfalls, you’d better win it all to prove your point…The argument is 1) Win a semi-good conference with a weak OOC schedule, and go to the MNC hopefully win it or 2) Play in a tougher conference with a semi-weak OOC schedule, win the conference by beating the 3rd best team at the time and barely get to go to the MNC—
If Alabama got drubbed last year by tOSU, then this year they got lucky and won some games they shouldnt have, and I knew they were still the same team as last year, and somehow got back there—-I would hope they would play well, but in my heart of hearts I would accept the beatdown since I know they shouldnt be there in the first place. (Hello Illinois!)
I dont think this will be a blowout on either side, I just think that the 2 best teams in the nation arent playing in the MNC and that is the argument that they whole nation is saying. After watching USC systematically dismantle Illinois, which beat tOSU BTW, in a thumping so epic it shouldnt have happened, I feel that USC could beat both LSU and tOSU combined as an all-star team….But, alas, after watching tOSU and LSU all season, I think this will be a 6 pt game if LSU wins, and under 3 if tOSU wins….LSU has played everyone close-even Alabama-and we aint no tOSU talent wise–Miles made dumb calls all thru the year–i’m just curious if it cost him THIS game since a tiger never changes his stripes, and by now he has too many stripes from bonehead calls to change now……

I would say that, going into this bowl game, this team is more of a team, more focused, better preparation, better chemistry, and the defense, which has played very, very consistently this year, is 1 year older and more experienced. So based on that, yes, I think this year’s team is a better team going into this bowl game.
When you look at the team that played Florida last year, sure we had a Heisman Trophy winning QB (curse), tons of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but we also had 9 new starters on defense. The offensive last year was able to carry the team, but when the offense was shut down, via Ted Ginn going down after 1 play and Troy and the rest of the team thinking they could just roll a helmet out there and win, there was just no hope for Ohio State, and it showed.
I try not to get caught up in what each team did all year, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is the team the prepares the best and plays the best in the NCG.
BTW, I think that Georgia is the best team in the SEC, and I thought that before the SEC championship game. Sure Tenn beat Georgia pretty good, but Bama beat Tenn pretty good…it happens. But no one has been as consistent as Georgia in the SEC.

Not sure how if we lose it doesn’t bode well for Ohio State. Ohio State is 4-1 in BCS bowls, we’ll go to 4-2. The ACC as a whole is 1-7. Furthermore, despite the bad press and last year’s debacle in the desert, the 2008 recruiting class is shaping up to be the best recruiting class in the Jim Tressel era. 3 of the top 10 OL have committed, the #1 WR in Posey (he is killing the DB’s at the All Star Game), the #1 MLB Sabino…and Ohio State is in the mix and likely to land Pryor and Josh Jenkins, despite dumb Luginbill’s reports.
As to your comments regarding our “recipe” for beating the BCS system, you clearly don’t understand or haven’t done your homework. Ohio State just finished a home and home series with Texas and has a home and home series lined up with the following schools: USC, Miami, VT, and OU, so that is 1 OOC powerhouse every year for the next 10 years, plus the Big Ten schedule, which despite your opinion and every other SEC fan’s opinion, is not exactly easy. Especially when you consider the Big Ten being 12-12 against the SEC in the BCS era. Sure we only have 11 teams, and 4 of them are academic first schools: Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue, but Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State, and Ohio State are not exactly cake walks for any of our teams.
Just ask Penn State who before joining the Big Ten was a National Championship contending team, and now they are a combined 8-21 against Ohio State and Michigan since joining the Big Ten and have an overall record of 89-64-2 against the Big Ten….16-16 against the SEC.
Washington was our OOC game this year and they were scheduled back in 2001 when they were competing for the PAC-10, before USC busted on the scene. But we did travel the 5,000 miles out there and play them at their house. They are not as bad as everyone makes them out…the finished 5-7 against the toughest schedule in the nation, USC, Ohio State, Boise State, Hawaii, Oregon, Arizona State, Cal, etc. Not saying they are great, but they are better than ULM, Western Carolina or LA Lafayette.
Don’t talk to me about schedules, Alabama has had some of the worst OOC schedules of any school over the last few years…Duke, Florida International, etc.

1. When did we get lucky? We lost 1 game and dominated every other opponent. Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State. Being that Michgan beat Florida and Wisconsin played the SEC east champ to a 3 point loss, not sure how that does in some way validate Ohio State as a pretty good team, not just one that got lucky….in fact, I think LSU’s win over Auburn had a lot of luck involved in it.
2. This is not the same team as last year, as I pointed out earlier. Just about the entire defense is back from last year when Ohio State was starting 9 new guys. Troy, Pittman, Gonzo, and Ginn are all in the NFL. They have been replaced with Beanie Wells a better running back, Robiskie and Hartline who are WR clones of Ginn and Gonzo, and a 5th year junior quarterback who has played just as good as if not better than Matt Flynn.
3. Illinois did not beat Ohio State down, they 21-14 in a game in a game with some highly controversial officiating. Including this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf1sWfPa78Q
Look I know you want Ohio State to lose, even though you probably hate LSU, think they are poorly coached, etc. because it will validate your SEC and make you feel better that although Alabama went 7-6 this year, they were in the toughest conference, blah, blah, blah…You’re just a hater and that’s fine, I live down here in the south and deal with people like you all the time.
Just remember this, despite who wins or loses the NCG, it has nothing to do with conferences, regions of people, etc. It just means that on that day, that team, it’s players, coaches, and personnel, were better prepared and they were the better team. It doesn’t mean the Big Ten is dominant or the SEC is dominant, in fact depending on which way it goes, it could only prove that LSU or Ohio State are dominant because the winner will be the first 2-time BCS National Champion.

The Artist Formerly Known as tOSUBuckeyes says:
It is easy to say now, having watched USC dismantle Illinois and Georgia hammering Hawaii, that those are the two best teams. But at the time the 2 teams were selected, Ohio State and LSU were at the top of the list. Ohio State with only 1 loss to a pretty good team and LSU with only 1 loss in regulation, according to Miles. USC lost to a 7 touchdown dog and Georgia wasn’t even in the SEC CG.
In case you haven’t noticed, this year does not feature 1 or 2 teams that have been consistently dominant all year…it’s week to week with every team.
I know teams are healing up and playing better with some time to heal, but no one really talks about Ohio State’s injuries:
1. #1 DE broke his leg in the first game of the season, out for the year.
2. Beanie Wells has had a bone chip in his ankle all season and a broken bone in his wrist since the spring game, both will require surgery after the bowl game.
3. Ross Homan, a stud starting LB has been out all year with injuries.
4. JIm Cordle, center, broke his right hand and has worn a cast all season and has been snapping with his left hand all year.
5. Brandon Saine, back up RB to Wells and a stud RB had his knee scoped after the Washington game and missed 3 games and only played a little in 2 others.
6. Ray Small WR, was banged up early in the year and couldn’t go.
7. Maurice Wells RB had an ankle sprain and wasn’t available for a short period of time…would have liked to use him more to spell Beanie.
So it’s not like everyone else has been at 80% health and Ohio State was at 100% all year.

You missed my point–in a pretend world—about Alabama getting lucky(it would take alot of luck) going to back to back MNC games…..you wont see that out of the SEC—-too many good coaches with good resumes—now what I do see is the way its set up, there could be an SEC vs Big 10 champ, or SEC vs Pac -10 champ the next few years as MNC game matchups…Its gonna be tougher next year in the Big 10 with everyone goals to stop tOSU, I think 2 loss for a Big 10 team and they are out, and it will be Michigan vs tOSU to see who goes to the MNC, Georgia, Fla, Auburn look to be the cream of the SEC next year, USC should be in the top 5….As far as conferences go, the BIG 10 has 2 powerhouses, 3 at best if you count Penn St…I think if you take the BIG 10 winner, PAC 10 winner, SEC winner and BIG 12 and maybe 2 at large bids or “wildcards”, a playoff would work 10 yrs down the road…Look, tOSU version 2.0 maybe a 100% better team than last year, the shock came from how they LOST last year, it was like they gave up…and how they GOT BACK in it again by playing one less game than everyone else is the biggest complaint, and letting KU, Mizzou, and WVU knock themselves out of contention and open the door and tOSU walks right in by not playing any sort of Champ game(the argument is that they play Michigan for the Big 10 champ is weak…if Michigan sux, then what does the Michigan game mean then?) I guess Ohio State has had the easiest 5 BCS games, never mind that all of them were Conference champions, unlike 3 of USC BCS wins, albeit dominating wins, came against the Big Ten runner-up, and in a virtual home game…not taking anything away from USC, they are scary good and have proven themselves worthy over time, but to say that we haven’t played anyone in BCS bowls is a joke.
Miami was the defending NC and riding a 34 game win streak, no asterisk, they had the ball first and goal from the 2 and couldn’t make 2 yards to win the game. That Miami team was probably the most talented team in terms of future NFL talent ever assembled.
K-State crushed OU 35-7 before OU lost to LSU 21-14.
ND was a blow out, 600+ yards of offense and TGII went nuts.

I stopped reading at: “You missed my point–in a pretend world. That might be where you live, but I live in the here and now, like most rational fans, not in the past before scholarship reductions, recruiting websites, the Internet, cell phones, microwave ovens, MTV, and text messages…

Thanks, I think. I have a bunch of friends down here in the south that are SEC fans and for the most part they are rational, it’s just the random guy in a Blockbuster who feels it’s necessary to run smack about the SEC just because someone has an Ohio State shirt on or something…what’s even more funny is how I always hear the same old tired ass lines…I guess it’s why I love college football so much.

Herbstreit said that he would have preferred OSU in the Rose Bowl than in the BCS title game, because losing in the Rose Bowl would not nearly be as bad as losing, again, in a prime time game where more people are watching.
If USC-w played the Buckeyes, both at full-strength like they are right now, what do you think the score would be? I think the score would have been 35 to 13.

I think USCw at full strength is clearly a better team than tOSU and I doubt anyone on here, including TAFKAtOSUB, would disagree.
However, the same could’ve probably been said about the 2002 Miami team as well.

Is it too late to have a jamboree? Have tOSU play Georgia in the first half, then have LSU vs USCw in the second half, then the have USCw play Georgia in OT…..hell we could have settled this in the Rose Bowl

Sorry but I have no idea what the final score will be and if I were to guess it right it wouldn’t mean I’m a genius or if I were to guess it wrong it wouldn’t mean I’m an idiot. It think it’s a closer than what the experts think and Beanie Wells could have a good day running the ball. 24-20 Ohio State.

I thought Illinois played well until they started to turn the ball over in the red zone, they are still not good enough to beat USC had they scored instead.
That said, USC looked great, especially on defense, but I also think that Juice Williams had a career day against Ohio State — and he should get the credit for it more than Ohio State getting the blame for losing the game. Juice had a Chad Henne/Michigan vs. Florida type performance against us.
Ohio State vs. USC in the rose bowl would have been a great game, but let’s see how the Buckeyes play against LSU before we compare notes…USC gets the advantage of having looked good in the Bowl game…prior to the Rose Bowl I would have said that it would be extremely evenly matched and Ohio State, with the running game, had a decent shot at beat USC at home in the Rose Bowl.
We’ll get to see these two lock horns in September next year…should be a classic. I have a ton of respect for USC, they will go anywhere and play anyone and they have dominated the SEC in their last 4 games.

They certainly look that way right now, but Mizzu, WVU, and Georgia all looked pretty good too.

Trying to expalain away tOSU’s 4-1 BCS bowl record is dumb. Any win in a BCS game is a “quality win” (Even Georgia over Hawaii).
I see tOSU beating LSU by 4 with coaching being the determining factor. Les will have his luck run out.
I think a healthy USC would beat tOSU at this point. There was a whole lot of luck in addition to Booty’s broken finger that went into the Stanford loss. But the best team I saw all year was Oregon before Dixon got hurt.

When Ohio State loses TAFKATOSUB says…
“Illinois did not beat Ohio State down, they 21-14 in a game in a game with some highly controversial officiating.”
Yet when Ohio State wins because of a phantom pass interference call TAFKATOSUB says
“Miami was the defending NC and riding a 34 game win streak, no asterisk, they had the ball first and goal from the 2 and couldn’t make 2 yards to win the game. That Miami team was probably the most talented team in terms of future NFL talent ever assembled.”
You can’t have it both ways… and don’t pull any of this “two different situations” B.S. like people caught in their own hypocrisy usually pull.
“…not taking anything away from USC…”
But TAFKATOSUB is going to take everything away from USC. Why? I have no clue, the diploma on my wall says “Texas Tech”
“K-State crushed OU 35-7 before OU lost to LSU 21-14.”
Kansas State’s nonconference schedule that year was worse than Ohio State’s was this year (although you could say that about a lot of Snyder-era Wildcat teams) . Wayyy overrated.
Speaking of overrated… OU’s 2 losses that year were to KSU, equally overrated, and LSU, the only decent opponent they played that year. Yes, it was a down year for the Big 12.
“ND was a blow out, 600+ yards of offense and TGII went nuts.”
Considering you were playing a Charlie Weis-coached Notre Dame team… that’s not hard. Notre Dame was also overrated,
“…never mind that all of them were Conference champions…”
and what conference does Notre Dame play in again?
Also, I noticed you didn’t even try to defend the ‘99 Sugar Bowl against the Aggies who beat yet another overrated Kansas State team to get there.
