HOWDY, BOOM M’FER: MUSCHAMP TO TEXAS
According to the always reliable internet buzz, Will Muschamp to Texas is a done deal, with something like 1.6 mil over three years as the pay. If either Mack Brown or Tommy Tuberville comes headhunting for you as an assistant, you’re truly gifted as a coordinator, and a spot as the DC at Texas is the next logical stepping stone to a head job for the still frighteningly young (34) Muschamp, who’s piling up the little Ivy League applicant coaching resume: forged in the furnace of Saban Academy, coaching under Tuberville at Auburn, and now likely to pilot a Texas d badly in need of repair. He’s playing Resume Hero and doing so in an extremely impressive fashion. If he could only get a gig as Pete Carroll’s tiny assistant, he’d have the perfect CV.
Having a top ten defense helps, too. What Muschamp’s defense has in common with former Texas DC Gene Chizik’s attack is a collective satanic mean streak, though Muschamp’s defenses don’t tend to lead with the head like Chizik’s did. (Hello, Reggie Brown. Hello, Joel Klatt.) Muschamp’s also way more blitzy, and will often come into the second half with rapid and canny adjustments. (Hello, Florida 2006.) They just play mean, fast, and smart football without making things too difficult on themselves, something Texas’ defense needs badly.
In short: he yells, he barely sleeps, and his players would by all indications eat glass for him. Sold!

Although I’m just a fan–not a blogger–I’m pretty sure Muschamp coached under Tuberville at Auburn.

Muschamp is going to wonder what he got himself into the first time one of his linebackers gets outrun by a white fullback from (insert random Big 12 North school here).
Of course, he’ll be making 500k to be an assistant, so he may not mind.
I say he stays for 1 year, tops.

I just wonder who Aub. is going to find to replace him. Do they go after Foster? He just got a raise. Tenuta? It’s going to be interesting. Losing Muschamp hurts Auburn in my opinion. Good move for him, though. It’s a lateral move, but it pads his resume.

#8: Cripes – what’s with all the killjoys on here lately?
The general tenor of my post – that Big 12 linebackers (well, entire d-units, really) are capable of giving up long touchdown runs to fairly slow, plodding, fullbacks was pretty well proven when Runaway Beer Truck lumbered past “the best run defense in The Big 12″ on Wednesday night.

#18 – equating 21st Century Auburn with 1950s Kentucky automatically renders your argument null and void.
If being DC at Auburn is so low-profile, why were about a half-dozen schools lining up to interview him to be their Head Coach?
I guess he’s hoping for those cherry coaching jobs you get when you’re the DC at Texas…football factories like Iowa State and Syracuse.

#20 – actually, “fullback” was my proxy for slow….but, yes, generally African-American backs have proven they are a tid bit faster than their Caucasian teammates.
If he’d like, we could list the top 50 running backs in terms of career yards-per-carry since the 1960s, and see how many are black, and how many are white. I would venture to guess the statistics would back up my “ignorant” statement.
The point is that the kind of LBs he’ll get at Auburn hold Darren McFadden to under 50 yards rushing, the kind of LBs he’ll get in the Big 12 give up 57 yard touchdown runs to Owen Schmitt.

Will Muschamp’s interview consisted of an Orange Bowl drinking game with Mack Brown and step son du jour Chris Jessie. Drink everytime Todd Reesing’s height or courage was mentioned, drink everytime Sean Glennon bonerama’d the ball into the Kansas secondary, drink everytime Mangino encompassed more than 75% of Mack’s DLP TV (it’s the mirrors!). Muschamp passed with flying colors boom motherfuckering his way into a sleep over and remembering nothing of Chris Jessie inadvertedly nearly touching his balls on any of the turnovers in the second half.

i’m probably one of the sec idiots you speak of, but i’m going to need a little more evidence than that to prove that going from coaching arguably the best def in the arguably the best conference in america, to coaching a middle of the pack def in the big 12 is not a lateral move.

He’s got a good defensive unit returning, the offense should be better . I say he stays at Auburn, waits on a HC job. Why risk having problems somewhere else. At any rate he won’t be at Auburn but another year or 2 anyway, if he hasn’t already committed to Texas. Should know by this pm. BTW, Auburn is not part of Opelika. 2 totally different towns.

I would say moving from the SEC to the Big 12 is a lateral move at best….after the Sooners showing vs WFV and the Noel Devine, star of NBC’s Jumpers,(he jumps from the backfield and instantly appears in the end zone 70 yrds away in the blink of an eye), its definately not a step up. What Oklahoma needed was a Defensive Line, and their 2 missing corners , plus a new HC….Muschamp will be able to continue his recruiting pipeline in the south , plus in Texas he should be able to get all the talent he needs to build his style defense…..the one he is leaving behind is freakin loaded with NFL talent…..he best be getting paid

If this deal goes through, and the rumors that Mack Brown will only remain coach for 2-3 more seasons until he retires, I would assume there is some sort of silent agreement that Muschamp would replace him. Currently there is no one on that staff that would be a suitable replacement.

Auburn also has a very highly rated school system Auburn High is 2nd in the state. Kind of handy if you are going to coach at the University and have children. A great place to raise a family.

I might be going back a ways but his coaching vitae was forged in the furnace of Brother Oliver who laughs at the puny defensive resumes of Tubs, Saban, and Mack Brown…

Know what Chiz, Gibbs, and Muschamp all have in common? None of them ever lost to Bama.
