Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

LE GOOD NEWS ABOUT LE BOWL DU ORANGE

Tonight's Orange Bowl does bring with it good news: Robot Jebus loves you! He watches and sees all you do, and prevents you from treading into the dreaded Robot Hell-worthy behavior.

Also, Thom Brennaman won't be calling the game with Charles Davis. Awake (novel idea) announcers Barry Alvarez, Daryl Johnston, and Kenny Albert will be calling the game from Miami. This spares you the monotone eroticism of Brennaman, but does mean you'll have to look at Barry Alvarez's ties, which can blind from a distance of three miles.

Barry Alvarez addresses the United Nations with his tie.

DCRTV reports that John Riggins is also in Miami to to participate in the Fox broadcast. He’s likely to be moist and garrulous well before kickoff, and that should be entertaining.

Shouldn’t “Du Orange” be “de L’Orange”?

Now…if only we can get a decent game.

Oscar,
I thought that pic was a photo take of the UF secondary during the Michigan game, or the Sooners defense from last night….

Maybe Barry will whack himself in the foot with a golf club again. That’s good tv….

Will Pepper Rodgers & BRAINS! be there too? Will KU employ their famous 6-3-3 goal line defense again?

On sad note, Thom & Charles are doing the BCS Champsionship game. Ugh. Double ugh.

#7, Pepper will be around if and only if VT goes for 2 tonight.

Why do people hate on Fox announcers? I prefer Thom Brenneman and Charles Davis to the blather of Kirk Herbstriet. I love Brent, but if I have to listen to the traitor, I’ll wear out the mute button. If Rupert would just spend the money, he could put a serious crimp in the Mouse empire. Please Mr. Murdoch, part with your billions to stop ESPN from fucking up football forever!

Kenny Albert, Thom Brenneman, Joe Buck…apparently the only qualification to be a play-by-play guy for Fox these days is that your Dad was one.

I wonder when they’ll hire little Spanky Munson or Billy Cossell*?

*actually – if they exist, both are probably in their 60s by now.

All the more reason to boycott the game.

Hopefully, when Mangino tries to give the peace sign at the end of the game, Frank Beamer will respond in the same way Dan Devine did to Rogers all those years back.

It’ll warm this Mizzou fan’s heart to see kU get slaughtered. And just piss me off even more that Oklahoma had to shit the bed last night, therefore giving the Beakers a nice way into the OB (where yes, they did come in talkin’ that noise).

  1. 5,
No Madeline Albright did not light a fart. I am uncomfortable even thinking that let alone typing it. How do I know she did not, I am still here, you are still there (I assume you are on this planet somewhere), there are some discernable figures in the picture. Imagine if you will 9/11 times a million… No, never mind, not even that could bring to mind the devistation which would be wrought. I am going to stop thinking about that now and head to my fallout shelter, just in case these comments have increased the likelyhood of such an event. I am not even sure that the fallout shelter would protect me. God save us all!

People don’t necessarily hate on the Fox announcers – I was down with Papa Hayden and the Munsonesque (not really) beer truck thing. But I still claim the Sugar Bowl call as the absolute worst ever. If you’ve ever heard a dead guy whine, that’s pretty much Brenneman in a nutshell.

“They’re honored to be playing at the Orange Bowl against a fine team like Virginia Tech,” said Coach Mark Mangino of his Jayhawk players during this morning’s press conference in Miami, which was followed by a FedEx funded all-you-can-eat donuts buffet in his honor.

During a more private interview with LAT, however, Mangino candidly shared that, “In all honesty, I don’t think an Orange beats Tostitos, or just plain Sugar. Or Papajohns.com, or Chik-fil-a or Outback, for that matter.” After a hearty, finger-crushing handshake, the Coach ended the interview before waddling forcefully away.

Mangino, however, accidentally left behind his playbook, which the Times has uncovered is in actuality a cleverly disguised Applebee’s takeout menu.

Thom’s promotion to essentially FOX’ #2 PBP guy is just baffling. I mean, I guess I thought Joey Buck’s rapid ascent to #1 was pretty wacky back in the mid-90s, but at least he serves as a somewhat less insane foil to Tim McCarver and somewhat less comotose foil to Troy Aikman.

Brennaman? Dude brings down everyone he’s with. The nauseating voice should be enough easily to get him dumped down to LF Daves territory (though he lacks the ironic detachment that can make the Daves somewhat enjoyable, at least on a hipster level), but it also just so happens that he’s a complete buffoon. We knew this waaay back in the olden days of 2001, when FOX decided it would be fine if Thom was their chief NLCS PBP guy, despite being the Diamondbacks’ announcer in the regular season. What resulted was homerism that even dwarfs his Hawai’i-boosting; this man actually called the Atlanta Braves “like a little league team” after a couple of errors.

So that’s bad enough, right? Well no, FOX decides that Thom should also do ACC basketball for a while, so a few years after the NLCS debacle we’ve got Thom accidentally dropping “yellow” on air in reference to people of Asian heritage. I kid you not. Sadly this episode came a few too many years before the YouTube era, so it’s been lost to history.

And then there’s Tuesday night. Really, this man is so horrible that the best you can hopeful is a mix of annoyance and ambivalence. Too bad that rarely happens. Instead, what you get is somewhat like what would happen if Ralph Wiggum narrated your dearly departed spouse’s funeral.

Thom Brennaman rides on his father’s (Marty, an excellent announcer for the Reds for God knows how long) coattails more than Joe Buck does, if that’s even possible.

by El Hombre on Jan 3, 2008 3:26 PM EST reply actions

I’m not a man who likes to paint with such a broad brush, but I feel confident in saying that if you like the work of Thom Brenneman, you are, unequivocally, a moron.

Crabapple Buck @ 9: Murdoch’s been too busy spending his money fucking up soccer in the UK to do any damage here. The proof? Fox College [your region]. Only a complete idiot would sign up with them as a primary carrier of conference games (Hansen FTW!)

I just realized something – that is NOT Barry Alvarez at the UN – it’s actually Marion Barry having an unfortunate free-basing accident during a speech.
