Emotion wins at West Virginia: Bill Stewart will be the next head coach for the Mountaineers.
In the meantime, Mr2Cents catches Bob Stoops in a moment of thought pregame last night.

Threadjack!
Hot message board / blogger rumor of the day – Meyer’s supposed comments to team after the Cap One loss:
“We thought we had some answers early in the season,” said Meyer, “and some of those young guys didn’t live up to the standards we’ve set. Our goal is to be the New England Patriots of college football.”
“Well, for those guys who just put in their time and didn’t make any real contributions, it’s time for you to go. It won’t be hard to say goodbye to some of those guys who just went through the motions. Now for those kids who actually bought into the program, and who made some sacrifices and contributions — you know, like Bubba Caldwell….he’s a graduate of UF and had a great career — you’ll really miss those guys. But just because you’re a senior doesn’t mean you have any value.”

Best photoshop I’ve seen in weeks. One hundred cocktails to Mr. 2Cents.

I imagined Stoops looking more like Paul Wulff blowing an O-ring while depositing a human sized turd on the sideline.
But I had to work last night and I didn’t see the game, so I stand corrected.

I don’t think this is gonna turn out so hot for WfVU. When their two stars go, and they are left with a merely decent coach, that’s the recipe for 6-6 son!!!

Bob Stoops: Phoning it in since December 2003

I hope Stewart does a phenomenal job and is rewarded with several great years at WVU. However, I’ve got two words for any program that hires an interim coach during the afterglow of a great bowl win:
Bobby Williams

Mark Mangino would like to know exactly where Stoops is keeping these gigantic eggs. He has 30 pounds of ham waiting for it in his giant frying pan.
Speaking of Mangino – if Oklahoma is the best The Big 12 has to offer, tonight could get pretty ugly in Ft. Lauderdale.

And, #1…can you “jack” a thread that hadn’t even really started yet?
by Eric on Jan 3, 2008 11:51 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’m probably off base here, but could it be the WVU pres. and ad went from thinking “Holy shit – we are going to catch hell for whoever we hire” to “quick, leading candidate or not, let’s get the announcement out & end this damn thing already” in the span of 3 (ok 5 for bowls) hours

RE #1, sounds like UF is a program on the verge of collapse. Meyer knows that his little two man show ain’t gonna fly in the SEC next year and he doesn’t know how to respond to reality in rational ways. He’ll probably spend the ’09 season on the golf course with Larry Coker. When Lloyd Carr coaches circles around you, then you know the writing is on the wall.

Stapler, problem is he has a national championship. It’s a lot harder to fire a coach with a ring.

I wonder if the WVU AD married the first girl he ever slept with? Like, the next morning.

He may have had a 8-25 record at VMI, but he’s tied for the winningest coach of 2008!
But really, how good does he have to be? Even without White/Slaton/Scmidt, they still have Noel Devine, who’s faster than any D UConn, USF, or L’Ville can run at them.
Stewart probably winds up the Lloyd Carr to Rich Rod’s Bo…not as successful or beloved as the original, but not terrible (only I don’t see any WVA DBs beating out an SEC QB for a Heisman any time soon)

Stapler (#10),
Coach Meyer has made these speeches before when necessary. I think mainly during his first year coaching at Florida when he was faced with players not buying into the program/system and not giving 100% during a particular game, back when some of the players were still suffering from a touch of Ron Zook hangover. Im not a player, so I cant say firsthand what is going on in their heads (none of us can), but its certainly not the kind the sign of anything being on the verge of collapse, and to imply hell be fired after next season is a bit premature. I mean, were you making the same prediction about Georgia after they were beat by West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl in 2006? I doubt it.

Guess “fireronzook.com” made quite an impression over there

Is Urban referring to the cheating by video part or the undefeated part? He has never coached long enough anywhere to coach his own recruits to graduation. His quirky offense would have killed a lesser QB than TT. He can thank Zook for his championship. While he is at it, he can thank Tressel and staff for the lack of adjustments and Roy Hall for injuring Ted Ginn. I hope UF enjoyed the ride, cause Urban renewal is not going to be pretty. Michigan exposed his system, Urban will be listening to NFL offers now.

Re #14: Sadly, Stewart’s 8-25 mark at VMI is better than any of his successors have managed.

1) I figured Stoops was just showing he had what it takes to coach at Notre Dame. If someone tells him he can’t get the job maybe he can refocus on actually winning the bowl games.
2) I had a similar thought about Meyer as noted above, and that he finally finished a third year at school. Time for him to cycle through graduations, injuries, academic casualties and see what happens I suppose. He was still successful this year, and I think will be … well … probably forever. This year just shows what we knew would happen when his “system” met equal or better talent at least half the games in a season and in a bowl game, a consistent won loss ratio more near 2.75:1, for shame!

Wrong fellows. Urban Meyer is bringing Pete Carroll style domination. Which means they will lord over all that is college football until they get put on probation for agents buying players houses and he bolts for the NFL.

FWIW, Bill Stewart was hired after the game when Nick Saban called the WV Governer and told him that Nick Saban doesn’t run the 3-3-5, and thus, wouldn’t be coming, despite the appeal of coaching Noel Devine – the only guy in CFB that Nick Saban is taller than.

#17, with all due respect, Tuberville has exposed his system. 2-0 vs the Myth, and it was done with Rabid Fuck-Lions blitzing every down on D.

Non-BCS bowls wins aren’ t important unless you are following the Paterno-Bowden race to the death.
Better to have Georgia receive the off-season No.1 adulation and the Gators get exposed defensively to remind them of the key problem — getting Tebow & Co. enough posessions in 2008.
K. Moreno’s face on the cover of all the magazines coming out next month for the 2008 season will be enough to motivate those guys.

- I believe it was Urban Meyer who called his running backs “trash” two seasons ago, so I’m surprised. The Gators will be in the national title hunt next season and no one will remember this, I suspect
As for Bill Stewart, hiring a guy after a emotional finish is a dicey proposition at best. UCLA hired Steve Lavin after he wept on the sideline after a Great 8 game.
