MUSTACHE OF THE DAY: BRYAN VAN GORDER
The former Georgia defensive coordinator returns to the SEC as Spurrier's new DC, and also as today's Mustache of the Day.

It's like a Whiskey Tango version of Arthur Blank's half-stache, and a fine one. If he wants to regain his old mojo as a coach, he should regrow it immediately. HAPPY MUSTACHE WEDNESDAY, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

That’s a shitty ’stache … kinda puberty-reminscent.
You neglect to mention his role as a horrible, horrible, horrible, Head Coach at Georgia Southern.
Congrats to him though, he did a stellar job at UGA and deserves a second chance as a SEC Coordinator. Even if it is with the most awful, the OBC.

best job in the world…spurrier doesn’t even watch the defense. you have to suck so bad for so long that someone has convinced the obc that you need to be canned.

I knew it was you, Van Gorder. You broke my heart.

#2: Spurrier may not actually watch the defense, but he counts the milliseconds until he gets to start calling offensive plays again.

Check the link on this one fellas. You get this high paying job, then you start being lazy… typical.

well, I guess we will get to see if it was all Pollack, Odell, Sean Jones & TDavis, or if BVG was a genius. My guess is, it was a little of both.
Best of Luck BVG. Just not against us.

Spurrier isn’t even sure right now if he just hired a DC. That’s how unconcerned he is about defense.
I’m a UGA alum and I like BVG, even if he likes to skip around a bit. Word is he had a personality conflict with a current UGA coordinator/position coach and that expedited his run to GSU after ’04.
I don’t look forward to the ’Dawgs facing him next year, but UGA does catch them early and tend to do well at Williams-Brice.

What a sad excuse for mustachitude.
Bring back the Brimley, Selleck, or at least the Reynolds. Them boys got some heat.

Van Gorder coached backers for the Jacksonville Jaguars for the one season between his UGA and Ga. Southern gigs. He was born a ramblin’ man. Tryin’ to make a livin’. Doin’ the best he can. Problem is, he has the I.Q. of a houseplant.

His D’s were better in the 2nd half too…so memo to Mike Bobo: break 30 on ’em before halftime.

Being fairly new to this site, what is so appealing to men about mustaches? Please enlighten me, Orson.
A lot of women do not find facial hair attractive at all. Keep that in mind guys. BIG turn-off.

BVG is a worthless sack of shit. He took a team that was 8-4 and in the 1-AA playoffs the year before and finished 3-8, winning only ONE home game. It was horrible. Also, he put this year’s Payton award winner on the sideline because he didn’t fit his “idea” of what a QB should be. Fuck this asshole, I hope USC loses every game now. He’ll be there a year and move somewhere else anyway. Since 1989 he’s had 10 jobs. He couldn’t take a little bit of pressure from alumni and boosters at GSU cause we’re not used to losing…so he packed up and quite 2 weeks before signing day. Talk about being a douche.
Oh…and his wife is a bitch.

And 17, if the Dawgs hang 30 on us before halftime, I will eat my shorts.

I’m not too sure bout his wife being a bitch, but my best guy friend went to GSU for undergrad and was ready to erect a very realistic effigy after his tenure in Statesboro. He was a horrible fit down there.
I hate the hire at USC as an UGA fan but he deserves a chance and he obviously did a shit job with the Falcons (though that may not be entirely his fault). Since I’m too lazy to look it up… was it after the 2004 season he left Athens? Or 2005 when we went to the Sugar Bowl in Atlanta and got spanked by WfVU? Seriously, do not recall…

He was LB Coach for the Jaguars for the 2005 season before getting hired at GSU in Jan 06. I’m thinking the WVU game was his last as DC at UGA.
Good luck USC against any spread offense.

Maybe you haven’t heard but UGA cleared the hurdle as a team now and they can score at will. If it weren’t for some gosh-darn bad luck, they’d be playing in, and winning, the BCS Championship game this year. Nothing can stop them. If Bobo wants to hang 30 on USCe in one half next year, Bobo will hang 30.

Van Gorder is a heck of a DC, and I hate that he went to So Car. That gives them a top shelf OC and DC (and LB coach). The only downside I see for them is that their coaching situation looks as shaky as ever as far as long term stability goes. Good gravy, the coaching talent in the SEC is just plain nuts these days.
by Because They Can on Dec 20, 2007 8:18 AM EST reply actions
Sarah,
Van Gorder left after the 2004 season, along with several great players. Martinez had an average linebacking corps to contend with for a couple of seasons, but it looks like with Curran and Ellerbe the linebackers are good to go. Dent even looked pretty good at the end of the season.

I wouldn’t say “at will” but since Moreno started blowing up (last five games) we’ve averaged 37.2 points/game.
May not be UF #s, but it’s a nice run. Anyone else drop 40+ on AU’s D this season?

Like I said earlier – we’ll see how well he does without Jim Donnan’s recruits blowing people up for him.
by CLTDawg on Dec 20, 2007 8:47 PM EST reply actions
BOOKIES!! No kidding, once he is forced to deal with who he recruits, USC is screwed. The UGA homers will talk all the shit they want, but he cannot coach in the clutch. He WILL be gone in 2-3 years. Spurrier will not take the fall for this man’s incompetance.
Check the Greenville SC paper after the GSU/Furman game 2 yrs. ago. He blamed his players for the loss. The same team he inherited from the year before with an all-conference returning QB, playoff experienced O-line and D-line and buttloads of talent.
I don’t care where he goes…you can’t polish a turd. You can dress it up, put it in a million dollar house, talk nice to , but in the end….it’s still a turd. You’re screwed gamecocks (and ya’ll were fun to watch in the 1st half of this season, too.)
by EaglePecker on Dec 21, 2007 2:07 AM EST reply actions
Van Gorder took one of the best players on the team, away from QB, to WR and suffered a 3-8 season (prior season GSU went 8-4). Then this season same player was moved back to QB, same team went 7-4, and he won the FCS Heisman, the Walter Payton Award.
That pretty much sums up BVG’s head coaching abilities. Good coordinator? Yes
