TERRY BOWDEN IS COMING AND YOU KNOW YOU LIKE IT
The rumor du jour–and the only food group this time of year is rumor, so double servings all around–is that Terry Bowden is pleading himself into contention for the West Virginia head coaching job. Or he’s making enough noise to be considered. Or he’s from West Virginia, doesn’t currently have a coaching job, once did in fact have a coaching job, and wants to get back into coaching, so using some vocational trigonometry BLAMMO!!! He must be in the running for the West Virginia job.
Anyone wanting to hire him should remember the curious case of Bowden’s departure at Auburn: Bowden fled the Opelika/Auburn metro area six games into the 1998 season after a 1-5 start and a near uprising by Auburn fans and boosters. It was not one of those quick little departures with a tasteful press conference and lots of jovial back-slapping, either: Bowden pulled the original midnight run move, leaving town literally overnight and leaving Bill Oliver to grit out the rest of the season. Bowden was there one minute….and then he wasn’t.

Go down, sun! Dammit, go down! I gotta pack!
We know Auburn’s boosters have roving packs of robotic dogs ready to kill at the drop of their master’s cap, but that’s pushing the logical fear envelope for a coach in trouble. The real shame in Bowden getting another job is that Yahoo would lose one of their more entertaining writers–Bowden’s column is shockingly good, and we’re not just grading on the former coaches’ scale, either; it’s legitimately good and often so.

I am sure there will be a rule , sooner or later, that doesnt penalize the players when they get duped into coming to a university, then the coach bails on them…there is no penalty, no sit out period, just get ya shit and start over somewhere else, but if your on Scholarship, you have to wait a year to play? Bullshit…
If Im locked into a program after being redshirted and supposed to start in that guys system the next year, and he leaves, then I want to transfer and have to wait another year….hell by that time I’m 30 yrs old with 2 kids after waiting on my turn to play……Free Agency fellas, negotiating monetary value on scholarships based on where they are vs where they want to go….
WVU is in a spot right now…no recruiter, no O-coordinator, no head coach, no nothing, and I am sure, depending on who they get, will have to do some sort of damage control to keep the athletes they have…

Was Bowden run off the Plains strictly due to the 1-5 record? Was there some other scandal swirling around him?
MPP makes a good point. I would take a different approach on the remedy, though.
Coaches jumping from school to school with the frequency of a cheap ham radio is bad. Giving players the ability to engage in the same destabilizing behavior would not only NOT solve the problem with coaches, it would create a new, probably much worse, problem with players.
How about preventing coaches from taking another job within one year [options] 1) in the same division; 2) unless both teams agree to it; 3) unless the pay differential is over a certain amount (I’m thinking of a way to allow the normal coaching progression of someone like Urban Meyer).
Just some thoughts.
My point of view here is that I like college football for all the ways in which it does NOT look like the NFL. Encouraging everyone to move from team to team makes it look more, rather than less, like the NFL.

Yeh, there was a bunch of off the field stuff, like starting receivers trafficking cocaine….arrest….half the recruiting class not being eligible, and thus having no depth, lots of injuries…..basically a perfect storm for a coach to get fired and he got caught in the tornado..plus Bobby Lowder wasnt his biggest fan and was, just like he did with Tubberville, actively seeking Bowdens replacement when Bowden was there, and it was rumored that Bowden got wind of it and didnt see the need of hanging around just to be fired, even if he turned it around after going 1-5 and having the off the field issues…..Poor guy goes 11-0 first season in and cant do nothing since they are on probation from the previous regime….

Bowden’s column isn’t bad but his talk show here in Orlando is horrid. It’s clear that it has to be a subject that he’s prepared for in order to speak on it – his knowledge on anything outside of current college football is spotty. Good luck if WVU hires him – can’t recruit worth a damn. The ultra-fast, lawyer talk doesn’t go over so well with recruits, or at least it didn’t in the states of Alabama and Georgia. Auburn was left with the dregs and questionable qualifiers. Once Pat Dye’s recruits were out of Auburn, we had zero talent left – hence lovely 1-5 start to season.
Not to mention walking in and quitting the day before homecoming.

The Bowden boys are an interesting bunch. Tommy is a pretty bright guy – likable, smart and has the demeanor and humor to handle the position he’s in, even if it means perpetually losing three games a year. He’s clearly the most like Bobby once was 20 or so years ago. … Jeff is like your TV when the cable goes out – you might get a clear signal on one channel if you hook up the antennae and tilt it in the right direction. … Then there’s Terry: thinks he’s the life of the party, but in reality he’s just the one talking the loudest. Being a TV/radio commentator/blabbermouth suits him perfectly. … And then there’s Steve…

from the Terry “thinks he’s the life of the party” dept.:
One night, while attending summer quarter at AU right before the 1998 season, my roommates and I went to an almost empty Botchers for some of their giant LITs. Like I said, the place is empty except for Terry Bowden, two guys who I assume were assistants and their wives listening to the accoustic band on the back deck. Terry apparently enjoyed the “college atmosphere” a little too much as he is wearing an untucked, unbuttoned flannel over a t-shirt and jeans with no socks and berkinstock’s and is way more than three-sheets to the wind. He ends up sluring through some song up there with the band and one of the assistant’s wives starts flirting with one of my roommates. At that point the assistant decides it’s time for them to split, which she resists in a drunken MILF comedic sort of way.
Needless to say, it was an interesting night. My only regret is that it was before camera phones.
