RUMOR RUMOR RUMOR

Okay, it's being reported by our contractor, so all due conflict of interest-y stuff noted, but hyah goes: your gasping Michigan coaching rumor of the day is Rich Rodriguez negotiating with officials from Michigan.

I thought he was going to Alabama.

That was my job. Damnit.

Good fit. The school colors are essentially the same, as is the capacity to “blow it” when it matters most.

by D-nice on Dec 14, 2007 2:52 PM EST reply actions

Do you think Rodriguez took our CHEESECAKE with him?

Seriously, that’s the only reason I came to work today.

OT

Just since you guys enjoyed those Arkasas or South Carolina dick/nutt jokes, I figured you’d enjoy this one.

Toledo, Ohio? You want to negotiate at the Toledo f’ing Residence Inn?

For that reason alone, I would tell Michigan that I am staying in couch burning land.

by Coop on Dec 14, 2007 2:58 PM EST reply actions

They’d be well advised to contact Rita first, as she makes all the job decisions in the Rodriguez household.

by Jthomas666 on Dec 14, 2007 2:59 PM EST reply actions

So, what, Michigan will get 8-10 wins a year, but lose the big games that knock them out of the either the title game or a BCS bowl.

Yeah, I can see Rodriguez at Ann Arbor.

by Techie on Dec 14, 2007 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Why Rodriguez would even consider going to a program committed to big, lumbering, immobile quarterbacks with his offense is beyond me.

It would be amusing if Morgantown lost both its basketball and football head coaches to Ann Arbor in such a quick span.

Michigan the Harvard….. err… West Virginia…. of the Midwest.

Yup. Sounds like a winner to me.

Don’t you know never to trust a contractor?

I bet The Sporting News would so install the wrong kitchen cabinets in your house and then make you feel like it was your fault before correcting the mistake three months later.

@9 The thought of Mallet running a spread makes me too happy for this to really be true.

by NDTom on Dec 14, 2007 3:05 PM EST reply actions

I gather they want to hire him because of how well his offense played against them in the first game of this seas…

Oh – THOSE Mountaineers. My bad.

by Eric on Dec 14, 2007 3:12 PM EST reply actions

@12

Hey NDTom, maybe you should focus on hungry Charlie and getting 4 wins before you starting getting tight in the pants about young Mallett.

by MFUkrainians on Dec 14, 2007 3:12 PM EST reply actions

Ooh. As a fan of two teams in the Big Ten, neither of which is Michigan, Rodriguez to the Wolverines is the first rumor I’ve heard (since Les Miles) that has made me think, “uh oh.” As a fan of the Big Ten generally, though, I think it would be an awesome hire.

Remember when Randy Walker’s Northwestern spread took the Big Ten by storm in 2000? Guess the name of one of the primary coaches to whom he (and current Oklahoma OC Kevin Wilson) had gone for consultation in the off-season prior.

by Big Ten Joe on Dec 14, 2007 3:16 PM EST reply actions

If true, Mallett may fulfill all those Internet rumors from the summer that had him transferring to Arkansas.

Mallett has to be salivating at the idea of being the next Brian Brohm.

by Coop on Dec 14, 2007 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Ain’t that the same play he ran against Bama last year?

by Yukon Cornelius on Dec 14, 2007 3:33 PM EST reply actions

Mallett did run the spread in high school and, to be kind, had “issues” taking snaps under center this year. It might not be the White spread, but he would be fine in RR’s system. There is no way UM ponies up the cash to get him out of Morgantown, though.

by tbliggins on Dec 14, 2007 3:41 PM EST reply actions

How many more million is he going to wring out of WVU for this one?

by Mike on Dec 14, 2007 3:45 PM EST reply actions

this makes perfect sense…DickRod signs a contract, pledges his commitment to WVU and goes and pulls this shit. That’s Nick Saban Mickey Mouse shit. Guess honoring a contract isn’t the fashionable thing to do, but I guess the money must be that much better?

Fuck ‘im, let’s hire Jimbo Fisher.

by David Puddy on Dec 14, 2007 3:57 PM EST reply actions

  1. speaks the truth. They are talking to the wrong Rodriquez.

by Pirate_mate on Dec 14, 2007 4:00 PM EST reply actions

Michigan is the nerdy little kid in high school who asked all the cheerleaders out the prom and got rejected each and every single time.

It’s funny, but also a little sad.

by Rob on Dec 14, 2007 4:04 PM EST reply actions

  1. - Coop – I believe that would be the first recorded occurrence of a QB actually transferring TO Arkansas — Petrino’s already making history

by Rowdy Gaines on Dec 14, 2007 4:04 PM EST reply actions

David -

I’d kill for us to get Fisher! I was on board with RichRod leaving last year because of Fisher wanting out of LSU.

Hopefully if RR leaves, Bowden doesnt die between the hire date and us contacting him.

Sadly, Houston Nutt already has a job, or that crazy motherfucker in the land of burning couches would just be too nice of a fit…

by beckett929 on Dec 14, 2007 4:08 PM EST reply actions

Um…Am I the only one who thinks this whole Michigan thing smells a little funny. How is it that they have not hired a new coach in one of the most sought after positions in college football. Did Les Miles actually SIGN that contract extension LSU was talking about. I guess after Nick Saban’s shinanigans last year, I don’t trust any of these guys.

by shovel pass on Dec 14, 2007 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Michigan is just dragging this search out long enough so they can hire Les Miles the day after the championship game. It’s obvious.

by stapler on Dec 14, 2007 4:12 PM EST reply actions

This is a strange parallel to last years search for Alabama….I had heard that we had Nick Saban since Nov of last year and had to wait til the season….same for Michigan…..they supposedly have had Miles locked down, have to wait it out, and here comes Mr. Rita Rodriquez, both of em, and we of course offer him alot less money than Saban(due to Nick having a NC ring)
and he agrees in principle, then Jimmy Sexton calls and squashes it, promptly Rich gets a raise from WVU and some improvements on facilities……he is playing the game, and I’m 90% sure Les is already Michigans, just playing the waiting game….Rich is looking for a bump, again

by Mr Pelican Pants on Dec 14, 2007 4:17 PM EST reply actions

It would be amusing if Morgantown lost both its basketball and football head coaches to Ann Arbor in such a quick span.

No, STN, that would not be funny at all.

I don’t see it happening – $4M is a lot of money and U of M would have to buy into a few years of suck while Rod installed his offence. And I have to keep telling myself these things so I don’t freakout at the very idea of this.

by CouchBurnin'Girl on Dec 14, 2007 4:30 PM EST reply actions

Seeing as how it worked out for West Virginia when Michigan took their basketball coach, maybe they should want us to take their football coach too?

I mean, Huggins is going to win a lot in Morgantown, possibly more than they did under Beilein, at least until he lands the program on probation.

Of course, there isn’t a coach alum waiting in the wings like there was for basketball, so maybe not so much.

by Yinka Double Dare on Dec 14, 2007 4:49 PM EST reply actions

Has the bama fan who put together coachrod.com sold the domain to some Michigan fan yet? That was probably the most comical coaching hire gun jumping I have witnessed. Photoshopped him into Bama gear and all. WFV to Michigan would be a snap with just a logo change.

by TIGERinATL on Dec 14, 2007 5:03 PM EST reply actions

Boy Pelican Pants – you sure are hung up on that idea of Miles still going. I really don’t see it. They’d be taking quite a risk that Rod will take the job if they do indeed plan on hiring Miles.

by The Last Dragon on Dec 14, 2007 5:18 PM EST reply actions

Pelican must go to a very good fortune teller. Mal Moore didn’t even know as much, or he wouldn’t have bothered “unofficially” offering the Bama job to Spurrer and Rich Rod just so they could say no.

But if I recall, Saban was the first hot name on bama’s list, but he turned them down initially. So yes, we all heard that Saban was locked down (even though he didn’t even consider it until after his season), because bama fans are always certain that the best case scenario is right around the corner, waiting to return them to national dominance, and are always willing to tell whoever will listen.

by TIGERinATL on Dec 14, 2007 5:30 PM EST reply actions

Aaand if that one doesn’t work: http://i12.tinypic.com/8e6mo9g.jpg

If Rodriguez does go to Michigan, I humbly propose a certain Mountaineer fan site change a few letters of their name, something like wemustignitethiscoach.com, at least for a day. Except people in WV might actually do something like that, so maybe not.

Is it me or does her hair style remind you of a Pekinese dog? Pekinese dogs are good lap dogs and I am sure she fits the mold, except when they sneeze, and since their noses are basically shotgun barrells, you dont want to be in the line of fire when they Snarf…

If you believe everything you hear “officially”-(meaning via media outlets, WWL, etc) about a coaching search, you probaly believe that hiring Tony Franklin as your O-coordinator is a good hire….many deals are made months before they are official…most times many involved are on a need to know basis, and there is alot they dont need to know even though they are part of the “search” in their mind….

by Mr Pelican Pants on Dec 14, 2007 6:09 PM EST reply actions

  1. She is attractive, but that hair…

Rodriguez should take the SMU job. His wife would fit in perfectly in Dallas.

by UTEx on Dec 14, 2007 6:42 PM EST reply actions

Senora Rodriguez reminds me of the “executive matchmakers” you see in the back half of airline magazines.

by Albino Tornado on Dec 14, 2007 7:16 PM EST reply actions

You know who Michigan and the schools should have been going after?… Jerry Moore at App St. Hell, he already p3wned the Wolverines and now he won his 3rd Div 1AA title. Sounds like getting a coach to out-Tressel Tressel, especially with the spread.

Rod: Okay, family, we’re moving to Ann Arbor. Let’s get on the plane.

Rita: Okay Rod. Sounds good.

Kids: Okay dad. We’re excited.

Rita’s Hair: Hell no, we aren’t Rod. I’m not leaving West Fucking Virginia. This is home for me. Fuck you, I’m not going.

by Gurn on Dec 16, 2007 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Well, as if there weren’t reason enough to hate Michigan, they have to go and steal the other Mountaineer coach too.

by Kate on Dec 16, 2007 2:46 PM EST reply actions

as a lifelong ‘eer fan… I’m disappointed to lose one of our own, but glad hes gone at the same time… a gimmick offense with no Plan B when the run isnt working has gotten us beat the last two years in games we shouldve won…
