Bobby Petrino will resign his position as coach of the Atlanta Falcons and is close to an agreement to become the new coach at the University of Arkansas, multiple sources tell ESPN.

According to sources, Petrino and his agent have been talking with the Falcons about his preference to return to the college ranks. The former Louisville coach was looking for an opportunity to break into the Southeastern Conference ranks, and Arkansas was a natural fit.

There is no deal yet between Petrino and Arkansas, but once there is, Petrino is expected to be paid around $3 million a year, sources said.

Petrino signed a five-year, $24 million contract to be the Falcons head coach, so he will be taking a pay cut to re-enter the college ranks. The Falcons are 3-10 and have had their season torn apart by Michael Vick’s involvement in a dogfighting ring and subsequent 23-month jail sentence, which was levied Monday.

Petrino will succeed Houston Nutt, who was hired by Mississippi immediately after resigning at Arkansas. Tommy Tuberville and Tommy Bowden were both linked to the Arkansas opening, but they remained as coaches at Auburn and Clemson, respectively.

Arkansas flirted with hiring Jim Grobe — a private fundraising arm for the Razorbacks approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach — but Grobe stayed with the Demon Deacons.

If Strong isn’t getting a job because of that Peach Bowl, that’s fucked up. The whole Florida team wanted no part of that game and Miami took great pleasure in whipping them. Almost too much pleasure because karma (and LSU in 2005) is a bitch.

Arkansas had black basketball coaches back to back with Nolan Richardson and Stan Heath (17 and 5 years +/-) and that didn’t cause the Mississippi to flow north; chickens still layed eggs, etc.

If a black HC candidate was a good fit I don’t think there would be any hesitation to hire; even at Arkansas.

I think alot of the problems are due to the fact that the talent pool of black HC candidates just isn’t that large, and those that have been promoted haven’t done that well.

I’m all for hiring great minority coaches, but I damn sure don’t want my school hiring a guy because it’s the PC thing to do, I want them to hire the guy because he’s the right fit.

If Charlie Strong can win a NC every year, people would be lined up around the block for his coaching expertise, but if he sounds like Buckwheat from the Little Rascals, I can see the apprehension in hiring him, as head coach is a very public position.

I damn sure don’t want my new coach saying, “Everyting gonna be O-tay wit dis team now dat I’m he-uh!”

I meant to say White Coach but you get what im saying. If he has a white, black, yellow, alien type looking wife all is fine in my book. My issue is getting a head coach that can get the job done. Not just in between the lines, from goal line to goal line but the entire process of class room, staying focus on the goals of the team, and to continue the do great recruiting from the speed state, the big state and Arkansas. The Razorbacks have some issues NOW with keeping the current talent they have recruited. We have had problems with recruiting for the last 2 years.

I don’t think anyone on here is advocating for the exclusion of blacks from the coaching ranks, but a lot of programs are funded in part by old boosters who grew up in the south in the 50’s and, as unfortunate as it may be, race does play a role in the hiring process.
