SOOOOOOWEEEEEE BOOOOOOM MOTHERSCRATCHER!
Boom, motherfucker! The creeping rumor is Will Muschamp, the defensive coordinator at Auburn, acolyte of Nick Saban, and occasional affront to FCC broadcasting standards, will be the next football coach at Arkansas. This is still in the realm of creeping rumor, of course, but it’s an odd hire for one reason: having just gotten rid of a spastic, yeah-rah offensive guy, Arkansas will have gone out and grabbed a spastic, yeah-rah defensive guy.
Admittedly, this is a very, very good yeah-rah guy, and it seems less of a conscious decision to hire one guy in particular than an commitment to hiring the person they felt to be the best coach out there after Jim Grobe turned them down.
Again, purely speculative, but here in the blogosphere that flies like Kevin Everett out of a hospital.

I sincerely hope that this one actually happens. We demand a certain level of insanity in Arkansas and I think Will fits the mold nicely.
Especially since the Pirate King fell off of the coaching prospect list quick, fast, and in a hurry.
And if Muschamp also decides to spurn the Hogs, please just promote Reggie Herring already. He curses just as much.

One last time–why is Arky completely overlooking an Arkansas native; who played his college ball in Arkansas; has coached at A&M, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Florida; and who has 3 more years of DC experience than Muschamp?
Could someone please explain that to me?

I can’t explain why Charlie Strong is getting overlooked, although it’s my understanding that he was interviewed. At this point, I have to believe that Charlie is the worst interviewee in the world considering how many times his name has been linked to an opening in the past.

As long as Tommy has been at AU the defense has been good. I used to attribute that to Tommy himself being a defensive guy and putting an emphasis on it, but I suppose that the main advantage to this could be that Tommy know what to look for in hiring DC’s. Either way, I would be more worried about who will run the offense as that has been a bigger question mark over the past 10 years, in my eyes at least. Especially considering that there isn’t anyone on Auburns team that I see having success at the QB position in the SEC, but that’s just my opinion.

Charlie Strong would be a very great head coach for the Razorbacks. Charlie R. Strong is a college football coach currently serving as co-defensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and linebacker position coach of the Florida Gators. Place birth Batesville, Arkansas. Why would you not want to look at him as a head coach. I bet you if he was to become the head coach for the Razorbacks he would say hell ya. We’re not living in the 1950s any more this is 2007. We need to get over that black coach thing. He is a coach not a black coach just a coach. Question for you that will reply to this comment… What do you call a white coach? A Coach or a Black Coach?

I don’t think anyone on here is advocating for the exclusion of blacks from the coaching ranks, but a lot of programs are funded in part by old boosters who grew up in the south in the 50’s and, as unfortunate as it may be, race does play a role in the hiring process.

I meant to say White Coach but you get what im saying. If he has a white, black, yellow, alien type looking wife all is fine in my book. My issue is getting a head coach that can get the job done. Not just in between the lines, from goal line to goal line but the entire process of class room, staying focus on the goals of the team, and to continue the do great recruiting from the speed state, the big state and Arkansas. The Razorbacks have some issues NOW with keeping the current talent they have recruited. We have had problems with recruiting for the last 2 years.

I think alot of the problems are due to the fact that the talent pool of black HC candidates just isn’t that large, and those that have been promoted haven’t done that well.
I’m all for hiring great minority coaches, but I damn sure don’t want my school hiring a guy because it’s the PC thing to do, I want them to hire the guy because he’s the right fit.
If Charlie Strong can win a NC every year, people would be lined up around the block for his coaching expertise, but if he sounds like Buckwheat from the Little Rascals, I can see the apprehension in hiring him, as head coach is a very public position.
I damn sure don’t want my new coach saying, “Everyting gonna be O-tay wit dis team now dat I’m he-uh!”

Arkansas had black basketball coaches back to back with Nolan Richardson and Stan Heath (17 and 5 years +/-) and that didn’t cause the Mississippi to flow north; chickens still layed eggs, etc.
If a black HC candidate was a good fit I don’t think there would be any hesitation to hire; even at Arkansas.

Bobby Petrino will resign his position as coach of the Atlanta Falcons and is close to an agreement to become the new coach at the University of Arkansas, multiple sources tell ESPN.
According to sources, Petrino and his agent have been talking with the Falcons about his preference to return to the college ranks. The former Louisville coach was looking for an opportunity to break into the Southeastern Conference ranks, and Arkansas was a natural fit.
There is no deal yet between Petrino and Arkansas, but once there is, Petrino is expected to be paid around $3 million a year, sources said.
Petrino signed a five-year, $24 million contract to be the Falcons head coach, so he will be taking a pay cut to re-enter the college ranks. The Falcons are 3-10 and have had their season torn apart by Michael Vick’s involvement in a dogfighting ring and subsequent 23-month jail sentence, which was levied Monday.
Petrino will succeed Houston Nutt, who was hired by Mississippi immediately after resigning at Arkansas. Tommy Tuberville and Tommy Bowden were both linked to the Arkansas opening, but they remained as coaches at Auburn and Clemson, respectively.
Arkansas flirted with hiring Jim Grobe — a private fundraising arm for the Razorbacks approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach — but Grobe stayed with the Demon Deacons.
Information from ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton was used in this report.
