COACH EXCITE-O-PANTS IT ISN’T
DOUBLE LATE UPDATE Yup. Totally done and official. It was in Wikipedia three minutes after Petrino called Blank at 5:45 p.m. to phone in his resignation, which must be some kind of internet sorcery. Jeff Schultz of the AJC calls Petrino “a quitter,” and we’re sort of inclined to agree, even with the biblical disasters that struck the Falcons this year–he didn’t even finish out the damn string, the least any coach could do. They gave you four mil a year. The least you could do is finish the disaster out and then go instead of “blindsiding” your boss. Having been a bad employee for most of our our life, we can totally say with authority that this is beyond the pale, since we’ve never done it, and we suck. Just ask our employers.
We’ll leave the rest of the post as evidence that, truly, no one knows anything. But all of that Will Muschamp shit? To hell with it. Bobby Petrino is the next head coach at Arkansas, according to John Clayton of ESPN. If true, the SEC just got even more horrifying. If not: ESPN’s hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahariffic.
The whole thing would have had to have been hammered out in a matter of minutes over cellphones to happen and sketched out on the back of a napkin. Given the amount of money involved–3 million a year–we wouldn’t have predicted that it would have happened any other way.
Ah, great to have a monster like Petrino in conference to go with Meyer, Fulmer, Tuberville, Miles, Saban, Spurrier, and Richt. Hey, anyone take the Michigan job yet? Anyone?
Will Muschamp, excitable defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers, will indeed likely be the next head coach at Arkansas. He’s naturally going to be called Boom! Motherfucker for life, but we’ll throw a few other possible nicknames out there just for the hell of it in a vain attempt to be family friendly, you thieving horde of goose-raping assholes.
–Coach Excite-o-pants
–Spanky the Indomitable
–Coach Mustyfist
–Mr. Babychimp

–Hyper-hypo.
UPDATE! We didn’t mention that this is potentially a really, really good hire, and a bonus for us as Florida fans since we won’t have to face a Muschamp defense every year now. We should have done that, so…um, yeah. It’s potentially a really, really good hire.

#46 – Actually, that report was part of a goof being done by their afternoon drive time show. There were also internet rumors all afternoon that Norm Chow was on the Westwood campus today, but those have also been debunked by the LA Daily News.
UCLA has not hired a head coach. Looking more and more like they’re gonna give the job to defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker

Fucking. Pissed.

you seem to miss the fact that most NFL players were GREAT college players. How many players from SEC teams make significant impacts as rookies??? Thats just the ones that even MAKE IT to the league! The SEC right now is a great breeding ground for NFL talent….but could NEVER compete with an NFL team….even the 0-fer dolphins.

So, are any actual Razorbacks fans happy about this turn of events? Maybe its just me being stodgy, but wouldn’t Hogs be a little leery? The guy has a great couple of seasons at Louisville (and the Big East ain’t no SEC) and then runs off to the bigger bucks in the pros. The guy has less than one bad season at Atlanta and then runs back to the lesser bucks back in college fb. What sort of trends can we expect here?
Looking in the crystal ball: Early October 2008 Arkansas will be in the AP top ten. Early November 2008 they will implode and drop out of the rankings entirely. By mid-November Petrino will announce he’s dumping Arkansas to coach for chump change at a local junior college, where he will lead the 2009 team to an undefeated season, followed by accepting a 2010 head coaching job back in the Big East after Schiano finally gives in and becomes the third coach at post-Carr Michigan. Repeat?

I totally agree with Steely… LSU this year couldnt beat 2 teams in their own conference, they arent beating a shitty NFL team at all.
if there was ever a team in college that in a one-shot game had a chance the same year that there was a super-shitty team, it wouldve been the ‘01 Miami team, ala the year the Panthers went 1-15, and were a TERRIBLE 1-15 at that.
I would probably hedge my bets that ‘04 USC could have covered a spread against the then 2-14 Texans, but not have beaten them.

Good luck with that, hogs. Petrino is a fucking pussy who never even tried to adapt to the NFL, and is now bolting with three games left in his only NFL season. Yeah, the Falcons are a trainwreck, but any coach worth a damn would want to try and overcome it. He was everybody’s hero building up Louisville, and never faced any real pressure there. First sign of trouble in Atlanta, and he fucking folds up his sour-pussed tent and runs away. What happens when real college DC’s figure him out, and he goes 6-6, and the natives start getting restless? He’ll fold again.
As a Falcon fan, good riddance.

Regarding Bill’s question of the reaction in Arkansas.
Arkansas fans are not happy; we are ECSTATIC. Many are showing up to the airport/press conference. We are going from horrible play calling (Alabama this year anyone?) to one of the better ones out there.
Many are also very happy that many national media outlets have to eat crow because we ran poor ol’ Houston Nutt on a rail. Forde, Maisel, etc.

Dude – come on. We had a 58 year Chris Weinke at QB, and he was the HIGHLIGHT on offense(sic) that year. Not to mention the D was miserable and Siefert hated the players worse than they hated him. I know a few guys that were on that team, and trust me, if they could have pulled a Petrino – they would have. That said, despite that 1-15 record, they still weren’t as fucked up as the Falcons are today. Where are Bartkowski and Andrews when you need ‘em most?

Actually I think Walker would be a good choice, and not just because the loons at Bruins Nation would go full-psycho mode from the get go and provide good laughs. As a USC fan I’d rather see him get run off and have UCLA lose next year’s recruiting class. I think a Chow/Walker combination would be about the best possible staff there, well other than a Chow/Coach O combo.
But I don’t see any coach stepping into there and being more of a problem for USC than Erickson or Bellotti (or Tedford if he returns to form) for at least a couple of years.

I like Patrino, but when he left Louisville, after saying he and his family called Louisville home and did not want to leave, he seemed slimy and duplicitous. I was actually happy to see him get in over his head in the NFL and get his butt kicked. Maybe he just had to find out the hard way that he’s a college coach. I’m happy about the hire, however a little leery of a man who seems on paper and on TV like a cut-and-run, opportunistic quitter. I hope that Patrino will stay put and show some loyalty. Arkansas needs a steady, successful coach to unite the fan base, I hope Bobby P can be that guy. His reputation is likely to be a little tarnished after this too. For everyone’s sake, he needs to stay put. Arkansas is already slightly wounded and will need a good coach after D-Mc and Felix Jones likely leave to go pro. I am happy about this tho. Wooooo Patrino, Soooie.
