Show me your scruples… If you weren’t quite convinced that this whole BCS system is a giant, steaming pile of elephant dung, you will be once you get through the coaches ballots. Among my favorties: **Lllloyd Carr - the 4 L version - voted his Wolverines 21st, a full ten spots ahead of their actual ranking. Oregon, the team Lloyd could not stay within 30 points of at home, is not on his ballot at all. **Dennis Franchione, apparently not content to fuck one football program in the ass, sent a parting shot to Hawaii, ranking them 22nd. Hal Mumme, seeing the team he wished he had, voted the Rainbow Warriors #1. **Tommy Bowden threw darts at his ballot. Oklahoma landed in the 10 spot, four behind… Missouri. Mkay. **The lone moralist in college football? Mack Brown, of course. Every coach except the Longhorns’ voted their team higher than their actual finish. As noted at DC Sports Blog: “The most stark moral offenders are: Lloyd Carr (10 spots difference), Mike Bellotti (8), Chris Petersen (6), Mike Riley (5), Randy Edsall (5), Tommy Bowden (5), Mike Leach (4), Ron Zook (4) and Phillip Fulmer (4). Frank Beamer (3) didn’t quite make this cut, but he was the only coach to vote Virginia Tech No. 2, meaning he tried to put his own team in the title game and no one else did.” **Howard Schnellenberger? Marching to his own beat. USC is ranked behind… Boise State? Crazy Requires Charisma Hawaii coach June Jones says Tim Tebow is a “system quarterback” and his own gunslinger Colt Brennan is college football’s best player. (HT: Wiz) Lord knows this blog couldn’t survive without all the feet coaches lodge in their mouths, but I’m a firm believer that if you’re gonna take the plunge into the abyss of absurd quotes, you gotta do so with charisma. Think pirates. June Jones?
Brian Cook suicide watch: day 13 Your uniforms match my penalty flag. Oregon State may have gotten the last laugh, but not without a valiant fight from the officials, who tried oh so hard to keep the Ducks in Saturday’s Civil War. And as Oregon State blogger Building The Dam points out, that may not have been much of a coincidence. Eugene officiating conspiracies: not going away any time soon! You gotta love it. |

not defending as much as i was pointing out that Stoops’ ballot was no worse than a lot of other folks - there were several coaches and computers who had mizzou (and/or Kansas) ahead of OU, and the fact is OU beat #1 by 21 points and lost ground to LSU, which is a helluva lot worse than Stoops acting in his own self-interest (just like les, tressel, richt, carrol, beamer…)
obviously reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit, which isn’t surprising considering your handle…
if you don’t want coaches acting in their own self-interest (or in the interest of their conference), then the coach’s poll should be done away with - this happens every single year, and the faux moral outrage–OUTRAGE!!!11!11!!!–will never stop rational coaches from acting in accordance with their own self-interest
…and i wonder if you’d express the same outrage if last week’s ballots were released and we got to see who dropped OU this week in order to keep them out of the championship…remember, beating #1 = losing ground, so…

Holly, Jeebus, and I are subbing in for Orson this week; I’m trying to figure out if I changed a setting this morning when I wrote the Curious Index. If I can make the comments go back to the way they were before, I will.
Apologies, if not. Orson will be back next week and can probably figure it out.

We love you, Orson. Please ask the electric box gods to put the internets comments thingy back in the first to last order the way it was before.
Shit, like #39 said.
Howard Schnellenberger’s always been crazier than a shithouse rat.

23: Wow, just wow.
June Jones actually has a fair point but he fails to realize that they’re BOTH system qb’s but people dont look at tebow like that because he plays at an established program unlike brennan. If you really watch Tebow without the blue and orange glasses on you’ll realize he truly isnt accurate, but he throws mostly short easy completion underneath or bombs. Look at the list of highest completion percentage, ALL OF THEM play in a form of the spread with the exception of Sam bradford. Tebow is not a great runner he just plays in the spread out of a shotgun which is easier to run out of, hence why numerous teams use a version of the “wildcat”. He has 22 rushing TD’s but only 838 yards, a 4.3 average and long of. . . 25 yards. Oh and he sure as hell doesn’t run a 4.48. More like a 4.6

Something tells me that against the same “competition” Hawaii saw this season, Tebow would put up even better stats than Colt.
Yea. It’s the system. Fuck you Jones.

The Coach’s poll has always been a joke. They self-professed don’t watch the games, and have a highly vested interest in where their team ends up in the grand scheme of things.
Problem is, I don’t know what to replace it with.

Thanks for the correction, I should have looked it up. The point remains, Tebow is an accurate QB and for a coach to take a shot at him like that is ridiculous.
It’s sad, I used to like Hawaii. Now I just want them to get destroyed by UGA. This is painful for a Gator.

Mark Richt also voted his team no.2, trying to put his team in the NC game.
Stoops voted OU 1 and LSU 6th, while voting mizzou and kansas 3rd and 4th. hmmmm.
seems Frank wasn’t the only rigging the ballots.

Jimer,
You may be right about Jacksonville drafting Tebow out of desperation. As for Brennan compared to Chang, Chang was undersized. Brennan’s a bit on the skinny side, but he has the height and the arm.

He put MU and KU in the top 5. Hardly defensible. Especially KU.

#25, fair comments. Time will tell. I do think he will be drafted high, though. If for no other reason than as Jacksonville resident, if he is available as a Top-10 pick and the team doesnt mortgage the future to get him, there will be a widespread revolt among what Jags fans there are. Sadly, it might come down to drafting Tebow to keep the Jags from having every game blacked out and/or keeping the team in Jax. Blatant ploy or not.
As for Brennan, he is the ultimate system QB. Just ask Timmy Chang about the system. That guy put up the best numbers this side of Colt Brennan and didn’t get a sniff of the league.

Just wanted to say well done, Peter. Until I scrolled down and read Orson’s post I had no idea we had a guest writer for the Curiosity Index. Not many people can be as obnoxious as Orson while also remaining topical and even enetertaining. Fifteen cocktails to you, sir!

#6 Jonathan:
I noticed Stoops redonkulous poll as well. OU #1, MU #3 and KU #4, was it? Nice. Hey, why not put Texas in the top ten you fucktard? Oh, yeah, can’t overrate Texas.
I’m looking forward to our trip to NOLA and playing Hawaii (honestly, I am Pete Carroll jacked), but I would not have minded beating Oklahoma either.

Bob Stoops’ ballot is the biggest joke of them all. He has Mizzou and Kansas above LSU and Georgia, and he has Texas ranked higher than Mack F’ing Brown. Just blatantly trying to boost his SOS. Shameful.

Stoops trying to get his team in the title game is no worse than Les putting OU at 5, Bellotti putting OU at 8, Bowden putting OU at 10, or Schnellenburger voting at all (he put OU at 7).
And it damn sure isn’t as bad as the fact that OU was only 8 points behind LSU in the coach’s poll last week. By destroying the #1 team, they lost 79 points on an LSU team that only won thanks to the steady arm of Erik Ainge. I’ll repeat that, b/c it’s worth repeating: OU beat #1 by 21 and lost 79 points on LSU, who trailed the 3 loss Vols in the 4th.

While I agree with the overall point of your post, I do have a minor correction: Tim Tebow is not the nation’s most accurate passer. Graham Harrell, Colt Brennen, Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel, Case Keenum, and Chase Holbrook all have better completion %s than Tebow, and Bradford has the #1 overall QB rating, edging out #2 Tebow by 2.6 points.
