MMM, WHO DOESN’T LOVE PRESS CONFERENCES?
The fact we have to wait for a selection show doesn’t seem half as unusual this year as a college football fan. As strange as it’s been, Barry Alvarez could come on the screen in a Cat-in-the-Hat raver cap, technicolor-striped pants, and twirling two glow sticks while screaming “SOMEONE GAVE ME BAAAAAAD DRUGS!!!” and it would feel apropos. It’s been bad trippy time for football fans everywhere this entire season–why change now? Just put Thom Brennaman in the fat pants, dose him on some cut-rate MDMA, turn on the camera, and let the fun begin. WHO LOVES YOU? AND WHO DO YOU LOVE THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

It feels so good when you touch my head…where’s my gum?
So while we all wait for the BCS selection show, please note that EDSBS Live, America’s Most Outstandingly Mediocre College Football Show, has been moved for one week only to Monday night on account of Peter Bean, our co-host, being exceedingly occupied this week for reasons unknown. (He’s secretly negotiating for the job of defensive coordinator of the Texas Longhorns. Let it be known that we think he’d be just as good as their current management.) It will be broadcast live tomorrow night when we’ve got BCS selections to discuss and a bit more time on our hands as a duo.
Regular programming continues apace tomorrow. For the record, we think placing the entire undefeated 2004 Auburn squad and the 12-0 1994 Penn State Nittany Lions would make as much sense as any other arrangement you choose, since the BCS is made to hand pick a pair of lions from the pride for their title game, not pull a pair a pair of random feral cats from a sack.

Missouri doesn’t get a BCS bid because they had to play a team twice?
Not one, but 2 teams, Illinois and Kansas, get BCS bids and Missouri beat both – convincingly (don’t let the final score of the Illinois game fool you).
I’m and Illinois fan, but still think that’s wrong.

Food for thought, if VT schedules The Citadel instead of LSU they would be playing anOSU in the MNC game. The system works??? Still don’t want a playoff?

Finals week sucks/stapler:
Honestly, you’ve been going off about this for two days now. Please, please, please let it go. No one is EVER going to buy into your argument of “they had the number one ranking twice and lost it so obviously they don’t deserve it, yada.”
First of all, you’re not even attempting to take off your red and black glasses to see how the rest of the conference, and the country for that matter, views your team’s situation. There is no jobbing. There is no intentional slighting of Georgia in this scenario. You played a good year of football and need to recognize that you have an opportunity to kick some ass in a BCS bowl game and make your team and the SEC look phenomenal, while positioning yourselves for a primo pre-season ranking in 2008.
Your arguments and logic are flawed and now you’re resorting to name calling (trashy LSU fans, etc) to get people to pay attention to you. I’m actually sorry that I’m responding to you at all, but I’m hoping you will eventually take a step back and realize that you’re being pretty fucking ridiculous about all of this.

So this is what confuses me: if Hawaii beats UGA, what exactly does that prove anyway?
A) Hawaii is better.
B) UGA is better but did not care about the game.
C) Hawaii did not care about this game but is actually so good that they won anyway despite UGA caring very much.
D) Hawaii did not care about this game but is actually so good that they won anyway despite UGA not caring at all.
E) Gators wear jean shorts.
F) UGA straight up don’t give a fuck because they were shafted by LSwho? and Richt thinks that is 1987 and he is back at “Da U”

Auburn was eligible for a BCS game last year and beat both LSU and Florida and didn’t get a BCS bid. It’s about the bowls picking, the Sugar Bowl took LSU instead of AU. Easy choice for them, shit happens get over it. The system puts #1ish vs #2ish, it doesn’t say Mizzou is more deserving than Kansas, it would be nice if it did. Then we could have UGA vs USC and OU vs WVU and VT vs Mizzou, and Illinous vs Florida? but it doesn’t work that way.

If OSU wins, SEC fanatics will have to shut the fuck up (well at least for a moment, we all know they’ll start again)
If LSU wins, especially if they win convincingly, OSU (and the Big 10 by association) will never be able to live down 2 bad NC game losses in a row, or at least not until the Big 10 wins 2 consecutive championships over the SEC.
Yeah, I don’t think OSU is a great choice, but everybody – you need to blame the pollsters. It’s not the Tressel’s fault, it’s not the players fault. And, you know if your team was being doubted by a lot of people about a NC slot, you wouldn’t give a shit. Do we not expect OSU to go to the game?

The score of LSU’s last home game is irrelevant. Georgia lost to South Carolina and was dominated by Tennessee, the same team that lost to LSU in the SECCG. The travesty of this is Georgia should play USC or hell play Oklahoma……Mizzou, beat the crap outta Kansas and showed they were posers and KU leapfrogs them?? KU didnt even go to the damn Conf championship plus got beat by Mizzou…how in the fuck does that compute? On what planet? I am a SEC homer, but something about the Big 12 and how they decide who goes where is fucked beyond fucked…That would be like Alabama beating Auburn, then Alabama finishing 2nd in the SEC, and Auburn jumps them for a BCS bowl…..Thats the math I would like to see the formula for….Is it too much to ask for decent football during the bowl season? WVU vs Oklahoma? After Pat White a) breaks a nail b) pulls a muscle c) gets tattooed at full speed—-they will have to bring the back up in and then its Katy bar the door….

Please tell me you’re not seriously flashing your OOC cred by mentioning the records of Youngstown State, Akron, and Kent State. The teams that made up their stellar records must be true powerhouses.
I’m a USC fan and don’t believe we deserved the NC game (yes, because of the loss to Stanford). However, I would much rather have had USC-GA or USC-Mizzou or USC-Florida (if we HAVE to play a 3-loss team) in the Rose Bowl. However, since the Illini beat your Buckeyes, I can understand your enthusiasm for their inclusion in the BCS mess.
Mizzou got seriously screwed – sorry, Kansas fans. Meanwhile, USC and GA are both in the sucky position of playing teams in bowl games they will get absolutely no credit for beating and be raked over the coals for not steamrolling.

Just one year later and the tables have totally turned:
2006:
Ohio State: Defeated two numbers twos, played four ranked teams all season, blew out every OOC team they played including defending national champs Texas in Austin, defense played well up until the final few games, and was getting ready to blow out Florida:
Florida: Struggled all year, had a great defense, but no offensive consistency whatsoever, beat one possibly good team in LSU, but no one else of much merit.
LSU: played five ranked teams, blew out every OOC team they played, had a dominant defense up until the final few games, and still picked to win decisively over Ohio State despite the struggles of their defense.
OSU: Hasn’t beat anyone of merit, hasn’t looked great for one entire game, offense is inconsistent, defense is a killer and has yet to be “exposed” by anyone.
Can we at least wait until after the title game to judge these two teams? I’m not sold on either of them.

As a USC fan I don’t really know what to think about the matchup, but I do think that one thing is being overlooked here:
“The Rose Bowl was not allowed to select Georgia because of a rule that protected SEC teams from being selected once LSU went to the BCS title game. Florida was also not an option under that rule, which was passed when Iowa was selected in the 2003 Orange Bowl to play USC, which forced the Rose Bowl to select Oklahoma.”

52 points is actually more than half a hundred. 100 divided by 2 is 50. LSwho lost to Arkansas AT HOME and they allowed Arkansas to put 52 points on the scoreboard. I love how you people want to get all technical about it and say, “uh, well it was overtime, yeah, so allowing unranked teams to hang 50+ on ya at home is okay cause it was overtime, uh” like that is an actual cohesive argument. It’s really quite sad, but then again millions of corporate dollars have been spent trying to brainwash the public into wanting LSwho to play in the MNC, so what can I expect?

Pete Carroll is a genius at making games seriously matter to his team, even after larger goals (usually the NC) have fallen by the wayside. Cliche – but’s he’s a great motivator.
USC, as injured as they were, could have beaten (or at least gone into overtime) with Oregon when Dixon was healthy. Juice Williams is good, but he’s no Dixon.
That said, anything can happen, and I hope Illinois isn’t just happy to be there.

let’s see… what have we learned so far this season?….
- almost any team can beat the other team on any given weekend (Michigan/AppSt)
- a great team with a bad coach can still pull off many big wins (LSU V several) but can lose one (or two?!!!) and still be considered great
- mighty juggernauts stumble every 5 seasons or so (USCw)
- even a blind hog can find a peanut every now and then (IL, Mizzou, Hawaii, Kansas, BC) but in the end they usually fall in a ditch
- even small schools in great recruiting areas can have a good team (USF)
- sometimes one great player can make all the difference (Tebow Daniels McFadden but mostly Dixon)
- Great teams may fall very low but beware the giant when he rises back up (ND, Ala)
- and the most important thing…. just when your ego lets you think you have this college football thing figured out, along comes a season like 2007 to humble you again

AZDuck says:
Among the best proposals I’ve heard,a little counter-intuitive thinking:
Get RID of the 12-team conferences and the championship games.
Instead, move teams into 10-team conferences in which EVERY team plays EVERY other team (like the Pac-10 does now).
Mandate that, in order to be a “BCS” conference, every team from a BCS conference must play at least one home-and-home game with a team from another BCS conference every year, OOC.
Mandate that no more 1AA games are allowed, period.
No more “independents.” Everyone is in a conference. Any teams choosing to remain independent take their own chances at getting selected to a BCS bowl.
With the broken-off bits of the Big 10, SEC, ACC, and Big XII, you should be able to craft 2 more “BCS” leagues.”
All 119 teams in 1A would be graded on the BCS every year, and a four-year rolling average would be used to relegate teams from the BCS conferences and promote teams from the non-BCS conferences. This way, a team from non-BCS-land which has been consistently performing at a higher level (say, BYU, Boise, Hawaii) would be able to get into a BCS league, and teams that severely underperform (Syracuse, Iowa State) would be relegated. The four-year numbers would not unduly penalize a team for one poor season.
By my count, 80 of the 119 teams in 1A would be in BCS leagues.
The BCS bowls would remain largely as they are. Non-BCS bowls would bid for their spots in the pecking order, by way of payouts. The non-BCS bowls would pick in order of payout preference. Each BCS league would have its “traditional champion” tie-in (ie. Sugar -> SEC, Rose -> Pac-10/Big 10), and the non-BCS leagues would get their championship tie-in with a non-BCS bowl (WAC -> Holiday, CUSA -> Liberty).

I don’t like all these mandates. I like to think of each conference as a “laboratory of football.” We don’t need some strong central government telling us how to run our conferences.
And how, exactly, is the BCS flawed in its ability to select a champion? Go ahead, replace it with an 8-team playoff. Certainly the #9 team won’t be screaming about how it deserved to be in the mix. Sure, a playoff allows for the championship to be settled on the field, but how do you decide who gets to be in the playoff? Every team can’t play every other team.
