MMM, WHO DOESN’T LOVE PRESS CONFERENCES?
The fact we have to wait for a selection show doesn’t seem half as unusual this year as a college football fan. As strange as it’s been, Barry Alvarez could come on the screen in a Cat-in-the-Hat raver cap, technicolor-striped pants, and twirling two glow sticks while screaming “SOMEONE GAVE ME BAAAAAAD DRUGS!!!” and it would feel apropos. It’s been bad trippy time for football fans everywhere this entire season–why change now? Just put Thom Brennaman in the fat pants, dose him on some cut-rate MDMA, turn on the camera, and let the fun begin. WHO LOVES YOU? AND WHO DO YOU LOVE THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

It feels so good when you touch my head…where’s my gum?
So while we all wait for the BCS selection show, please note that EDSBS Live, America’s Most Outstandingly Mediocre College Football Show, has been moved for one week only to Monday night on account of Peter Bean, our co-host, being exceedingly occupied this week for reasons unknown. (He’s secretly negotiating for the job of defensive coordinator of the Texas Longhorns. Let it be known that we think he’d be just as good as their current management.) It will be broadcast live tomorrow night when we’ve got BCS selections to discuss and a bit more time on our hands as a duo.
Regular programming continues apace tomorrow. For the record, we think placing the entire undefeated 2004 Auburn squad and the 12-0 1994 Penn State Nittany Lions would make as much sense as any other arrangement you choose, since the BCS is made to hand pick a pair of lions from the pride for their title game, not pull a pair a pair of random feral cats from a sack.

I’m sorry if my language offended you..it wasn’t my intent.
But even SEC homers are telling you to pipe down. The bottom line is that every team had a bad loss that ended up hurting them in the end. Oklahoma had Colorado, USC had Stanford, Georgia (yes, Georgia!) had South Carolina. Ohio State’s only loss came to the Big Ten’s representative in the Rose Bowl; they won the games they had to win otherwise. Period.

By that logic none of these threads or ESPN shows talking about matchups should matter.
That makes no sense. Seriously, explain why someone should just “deal with it”? Its football, its fun to discuss and watch and play. That is why NO ONE just “deals with it”. People are complaining about Illinois to the Rose or Hawaii even going to a BCS game OR the fact that they aren’t in the champ game. People have discussions about who should be ranked where? Should Kansas be ranked over Mizzou? Over Okla?
Should they all just stop dicussing it and “deal with it”?
And if so, why?

“Ohio State’s only loss came to the Big Ten’s representative in the Rose Bowl.”
#100: I see you’re trying to insinuate that OSU’s one loss was a “good loss” because, after all, the Illini are going to the Granddaddy of them all, as the Big-10’s team with the second best record.
Well that says very little about the Big 10, doesn’t it? Twenty minutes ago even Herbstreit admitted how bad they are.
Illinois is in the Rose Bowl because its tradition to take the Big-10 champ, or the Big-10 runner up, vs the PAC-10 champ. If that wasn’t the case, NO WAY 9-3 Illinois would be feasibly interesting to anyone watching the Rose Bowl. NO WAY. If there wasn’t the hideous PAC-10/Big-10 contract, OSU’s one loss would be to a team no one would put in a BCS bowl.
Do not attempt to make the Illinois loss look like a “good loss.” Illinois had been beaten by IOWA and Michigan. Illinois was unranked and playing AT OSU. It was not a decent loss against a Rose-Bowl-bound (out of tradition ONLY) team, it was a home loss against an unranked team in the “Big” 10 who SHOULD be heading to something like the Champs Sports Bowl against another 3 loss team.
Admittedly, OSU did indeed get the job done at Youngstown State, Kent, Akron and a hyped up, eventually 4-loss Michigan who had an injured Henne and Hart. As for wins against “ranked” teams, where are Penn State, Wisconsin and Purdue now? Is it any wonder the Buckeyes are 11-1 when their highest ranked opponent all season was #19?

The Big Ten was 2-1 head-to-head vs. the SEC last bowl season. I still think the SEC is a tougher conference, but the fact remains that when we had a chance to prove it last year, we didn’t. No amount of strength of schedule comparison can change that.

NMS says:
“There is no playoff so your “Fact” .. is baseless. ””
Ha, even a playoff wouldn’t “prove” a team better beyond a reasonable doubt. I mean, Pitt beat West Va. Who would say Pitt is a truly better team all things considered?
Does anyone think that, for most of 05-06 George Mason was one of the best 4 teams in college basketball?
I meant that it is factual that those teams are better than anyone the Big Ten plays if you evaluate them by the criteria that everyone agrees is reasonable to evaluate what teams are better than others..and that is things like record, schedule and victory/loss margins.
You know, things that the BCS and polls evaluate on. Of course no one can “prove” definitively that one team is better than another except in certain rare scenarios. For instance, would you agree that USC is better than Georgia Tech? Probably. But they never played head to head this year, nor had common opponents.
Arguing that you can’t TOTALLY PROVE THAT accomplishes nothing when a conclusion using the facts you do have is pretty clear. Just like the facts about the Big Ten this year are pretty clear
And how does disagreeing with you make anyone a loser?

It is clear the system sucks and until they change it, it will always suck.
But the bowl games will get over-hyped, they will all sell out, get massive tv ratings, and by March, no one will remember these controversies, and the system will stay the same. We all agree it sucks. But you trying to continually say, “OSU doesn’t deserve it.” blah blah over and over is annoying. Were they supposed to say “we can’t except.” The system chose them. How much clearer can it be?

Look, however you want to play it, Georgia got jobbed by the BCS again. In 2002, we were stuck playing a completely horrible FSU team, and we had won the SEC and were 12-1 (a similar record to the last two SEC national title winners, if I remember correctly…) with a stifling defense and an offense that was rolling pretty well near the mid-season.
In 2005, we got stuck playing a game in which we got not credit for winning, and only got laughed at for losing. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Anyone?! We’re getting stuck with a Hawai’i team that nobody will expect to seriously beat us, and if the Dawgs, who deserved as much as tOSU to move up into the #2 spot, come out flat and pissed like Auburn did in 2004 in the Sugar Bowl because they got passed over for no good reason, then we get ridiculed and told we didn’t deserve a shot at the MNC because we were pissed we got saddled with Hawai’i.
Look, no disrespect is meant to Hawai’i, but we’re roughly a 100 above them in any strength of schedule rankings. We’ve played tougher teams than them almost ever week of the year (sans our game vs. Western Carolina), and we came out of that 10-2. They played Cupcake U. every week, and are 12-0. Again, it’s not to downplay the fact that they survived their schedule, but it doesn’t do Georgia a lick of good to play them. This is the definition of a trap game, and I, for one, am tired of being the team that consistently gets saddled with them.

All I’m saying is that a loss to a 9-3 team is hardly a “bad loss” when you compare it to the bad losses of some other teams who claim to have a beef on the BCS Title game.
To wit:
Oklahoma lost to 6-6 Colorado
Georgia lost to 6-6 South Carolina (no bowl)
USC lost to 4-8 Stanford (no bowl)
Now if you want to argue that Virginia Tech (LSU, BC), Kansas (Missouri) or Missouri (Oklahoma twice) got screwed, I’m all ears.
I hate arguing for Ohio State because I hate them with a passion, but to say it’s a traveshamockery that they’re in the title game when they have one loss all season is tricky.

It really does suck to be Georgia. It’s a “so what” game if they win, a semi-debacle if they lose, and pretty much everyone outside of Georgia will be pulling for Hawaii in their heart of hearts. Tough cards.
Unlike 2004 Auburn, there isn’t a legitimate beef to be had here. Pretty much everyone in the mix could have been a slam dunk had they made a play at one point or another, but everyone choked or preempted choking by being out of the discussion early. The “hot” or “best right now” argument is pretty flawed, especially because it’ll be a month before they play.
The secondary bowl matchups are pretty disappointing (USC-Georgia could have been ALLSOME, and Kansas-Hawaii would be similarly intriguing, because would we ever know if either of them was any good?), but I’m going to enjoy the sweatervest take on the most histrionic team in recent memory on the big stage.

And, while you had a decent claim for a MNC shot, I wouldn’t say you’ve gotten “jobbed.” In 2002, was the BCS supposed to tell an undefeated tOSU or Miami team to step aside because Georgia (who had last to Zook that year) “had a stifling defense and an offense that was rolling pretty well near the mid-season”?
