OPEN THREAD (OF THE DAMNED)

Swindle reports from the SEC Championship press box that Stewart Mandel is a Dapper Dan man. Best of luck to him in his fisticuffs, and to all of you in your end of season drankin’ and gallivantin’.
Swindle: Much thanks to Holly for the open thread opening. We were busy watching Les Miles nutslap ESPN two hours before the biggest game of the year. What happened in that press conference, and what’s allegedly happening in a fitting love triangle to end the Time of Troubles that this season’s been:
–First, the number we’ve gotten on LSU’s counter-offer to Miles is $3.45 million. Michigan’s not even in the same fairway as that offer at ~2.5 million a year.
–The media’s busy parsing the hell out of Miles’ verbiage like he’s a diplomat making a speech at the WTO. They shouldn’t–Miles came out with the body posture of a wrestler addressing the crowd and said ESPN was full of shit. That’s it. Tightly wound, school-of-Woody-Hayes tempermental PR posturing, pure and simple. He could have been brained with a folding chair by Lloyd Carr in the middle of it and it wouldn’t have seemed out of place.
–Sean O’Keefe, chancellor of LSU, looks like a man who bathes in Domaine du Puys and craps solid bars of platinum. Being nicknamed “Pappy” or “Red” and owning several islands devoted solely to his pleasure would NOT surprise us.
UPDATE: CBS and EDSBS, together again for the first time:
Your entire lives have been building to this moment; you just didn’t know it.
Swindle: Verne’s the nicest man you’ll ever meet. Danielson, on the other hand, stabbed us with the sharpened end of a broom handle on the way out. We kid! He was down ton the field doing his job when we were chatting with Verne.
Oh, and stop by and read the liveblog from the Championship Game over at the SN. It’s fact-tastic!
Update: we’re going to do a story on Erik Ainge maturing as a quarterback for tomorrow. We think it’ll happen any day now, and when it does, whoo-whee, look out!

For kicks … the eight team playoff (six major conference champs, two wildcards using BCS rules), with predicted seedings based on BCS standings:
#1 OSU vs. #8 WVU
#2 LSU vs. #7 KU
#3 UGA vs. #6 OU
#4 VT vs. #5 USC
For further kicks … the sixteen team playoff (all conference champs, five wildcards using BCS rules) with predicted seedings based on Sagarin rankings:
#1 OSU vs. #16 FAU
#2 LSU vs. #15 CMU
#3 UGA vs. #14 UCF
#4 VT vs. #13 BYU
#5 USC vs. #12 HAW
#6 OU vs. #11 ASU
#7 KU vs. #10 UF
#8 WVU vs. #9 MIZZOU
Seriously – who wouldn’t enjoy either of these?

4. Bite us, UGA, you couldn’t even beat the Tennessee Volunteers. So long, and thanks for playing….

Mr. Pelican Pants, OSU was ranked 10-12 when it started out. Two big 10 teams were ahead of them. They get ranked real high normally, but not really this year. Don’t blame OSU for EVERY freaking other good team losing at least 2 games. They might not be one of the best two teams in the country (and I know all SEC/USC fans just like to hate on the Buckeyes, or should I say “Suckeyes”?) but got damn every other team looks kinda undeserving too.

>> “damn close games against teams which are either ranked or close to it” sounds an awful lot like Lesspeak. Kind of like “unbeaten in regulation.”
If there was a one-loss team (aside from Kansas, whose best win just might be Central Michigan) to take their place, I would absolutely argue for them ahead of LSU. But how you lose should matter – not as much as how often you lose, who you lose to, who you beat, etc., but it should count for something. Are you seriously telling me that all else (timing of losses, opponent, location, and everything) being equal, a pair of 3OT losses isn’t better than losing once by 6 in regulation and once by 21?

Exactly. That’s the situation Georgia was in when they played WVU in the Sugar Bowl in ‘05. Everyone talked the entire off season about how humiliating it was to lose to a “Big Least” team.
Of course, in hindsight, they turned out to be a lot better than everyone thought at the time.
It’s just going to suck if UGA has to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl this time. Not that it wouldn’t be great to go to the Sugar Bowl, but as you say there would be nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Reasonable_Bama_Fan says:
Well I’ll be danged. WWL puts up an instant poll on their website and offer the possibility of a 6 team playoff (my choice). I thought I was the only one who thought of that. give top 2 byes and have #5 play at #4 and #6 at #3. That way every single regular season game is going to have meaning, even if both losers are still going to get in the playoffs.
Much as I like the Dawgs, I’m afraid LSU or OU have better championship resumes by virtue of winning their title game. For that matter, U$Cs midseason struggles are very much indentifiable as being due to injury, so I’d actually be inclined to vote them #2 were I a poll voter. Which I’m thankfully not.

But the voters put UGA at #4, above LSU, last week, even taking into account those two “quality losses.”
The system sucks, but it’s the system we’ve got. If it changes next year, so be it. But I still say, even though they aren’t more deserving than anyone, UGA isn’t less deserving either.

Oh, and for everyone who’s just trotting out the negatives against a particular team:
Don’t. Every team has a lot of negatives against them. This isn’t like the Washington-Miami-FSU argument, or AU-U$C-OU argument, where you’re trying to pick from a bunch of positives. This is trying to find the least of all evils. Americans should be used to this after the last 40 years of Presidential politics. So focus on the team’s total resume, particularly quality wins.

lets just admit that this season is out of control. No one team wants to win. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I understand the ‘parity’ argument, but how many times can you remember 1 and 2 losing each week?!?! Don’t blame Ohio State, they have a coach that plays so bland that all of the bookies in Vegas go nuts trying to create a point spead for them to barely win by. In every conference, the established crown princes went through some injury issues: USC, LSU, look at Oregon crusing to the post season. . .then they lose the star. The Big East were their usual ‘we think that we can play with the big boys’, conference but can’t put a solid winner together.
face it, this is the year that a playoff system will be created on.

Looking back over the schedule, I’m more and more inclined to toss USC into the conversation for tMNC. They only lost in conference (as did LSU) and Pac-10 has beaten an SEC team (Cal over Tennessee, who we might remember played for the SEC title today), while SEC has beaten no Pac-10 teams this year. I know I’m just gonna get shouted down for Pac-10 prejudices, but face it: it’s a good fucking conference. If you want to make the argument that the SEC is tougher, then they shouldn’t lose to PAC-10 teams.

I feel like shooting myself now. I would rather have had Mizzou and WFVA both win rather than see the BCS pick some random 2 loss team and SCREW USC AGAIN! USC has been screwed by the lack of a playoff in 2003, 2006, and this year its going to be screwed as well.
I know, you’re all going to claim Stanford, Stanford, etc. But USC lost to Stanford because freaking Booty broke his finger during the game, refused to come out, and threw 5 picks. If this came down to a playoff, who would love to play USC now that USC’s players are healthy?
