OPEN THREAD (OF THE DAMNED)

Swindle reports from the SEC Championship press box that Stewart Mandel is a Dapper Dan man. Best of luck to him in his fisticuffs, and to all of you in your end of season drankin’ and gallivantin’.
Swindle: Much thanks to Holly for the open thread opening. We were busy watching Les Miles nutslap ESPN two hours before the biggest game of the year. What happened in that press conference, and what’s allegedly happening in a fitting love triangle to end the Time of Troubles that this season’s been:
–First, the number we’ve gotten on LSU’s counter-offer to Miles is $3.45 million. Michigan’s not even in the same fairway as that offer at ~2.5 million a year.
–The media’s busy parsing the hell out of Miles’ verbiage like he’s a diplomat making a speech at the WTO. They shouldn’t–Miles came out with the body posture of a wrestler addressing the crowd and said ESPN was full of shit. That’s it. Tightly wound, school-of-Woody-Hayes tempermental PR posturing, pure and simple. He could have been brained with a folding chair by Lloyd Carr in the middle of it and it wouldn’t have seemed out of place.
–Sean O’Keefe, chancellor of LSU, looks like a man who bathes in Domaine du Puys and craps solid bars of platinum. Being nicknamed “Pappy” or “Red” and owning several islands devoted solely to his pleasure would NOT surprise us.
UPDATE: CBS and EDSBS, together again for the first time:
Your entire lives have been building to this moment; you just didn’t know it.
Swindle: Verne’s the nicest man you’ll ever meet. Danielson, on the other hand, stabbed us with the sharpened end of a broom handle on the way out. We kid! He was down ton the field doing his job when we were chatting with Verne.
Oh, and stop by and read the liveblog from the Championship Game over at the SN. It’s fact-tastic!
Update: we’re going to do a story on Erik Ainge maturing as a quarterback for tomorrow. We think it’ll happen any day now, and when it does, whoo-whee, look out!

As far as I’m concerned, LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee finished in a three-way tie for the SEC title. Why should I give any credence to the arbitrary way they divided up the teams for their cash-grab extra game? They all had two conference losses. Why do some of you give what is essentially an accident of geography so much importance?

OK, class, let me summarize the 2007 CF season for you:
There are 119 Division 1 football teams. 118 of them have a legitimate claim to play in this year’s MNC game. You know, Notre Dame being unique as it is, and all…

Stapler, I agree with you that Georgia deserves a shot at the MNC, but your excessive exclamation points and calling people douchebags makes you look like a jackass.
Also, MSU was actually pretty decent this year. Oh yeah, and UGA lost to a 6-6 team at home.

LSU, who the pollsters had ranked lower than Georgia and Kansas – even when they knew neither team could win their division – and the VTech team they beat way back when the Mets were still playing meaningful baseball, will get to leapfrog all of them now that there’s an opening in the BCS Bowl.

Xon says:
As a Dawg fan, I can honestly say that I supported Nebraska in 2001. Not Okalahoma in 2003, but there was a clearly better ‘resume’ that year. In 2001 it was a cluster, and there is no way to convince me that Oregon (weak schedule, one loss) or Colorado (b12 champ, beat Nebraska, but two losses) ‘deserved’ it over Nebraska. Sometimes the season is just a mess, and if you have to pick two teams to fight it out then the mess will be reflected in your choice.
I’m not saying Georgia is clearly the team that does deserve it, just that holding them out for not winning the SEC is a bogus reason. Tom already pointed out the geographical oddity of it all. Why not just pretend it’s 1988 and there was a three way tie for the SEC?
What I do know is this: last week the poll voters in all major polls said that Georgia was the #4 team in the country. They had them ranked higher than any other SEC team, and higher than other teams playing for conf champs, knowing full well that the Dawgs would not be in the conf champ game. Nothing has changed about any of that to make people think that LSU suddenly became ‘better’ than Georgia. Crap, the LSU AD was ROOTING for Tennessee the last three weeks. Everybody knows that LSU didn’t want to play Georgia today in that game.
Georgia was supposedly #4 last week and now two teams ahead of them have lost. Put them #2. I’m not asking for them to jump ahead of the two loss pack all of a sudden. They’ve been the highest ranked two-loss team for a month. This year, this crazy year, a 2 loss team is getting into the game. It’s crazy, nobody expected it, but it is happening. All the teams other people are arguing for also have 2 losses. It feels icky, but there is no way around it. But Georgia has been king of that particular hill, and they have done nothing to deserve to drop. They are universally recognized as one of the best teams at this moment (along with USC).
Finally, I pulled for the Gators last season to do the SEC proud and beat the Buckeyes, and I relished it when they did so. The proprietors of this blog are kind gentlemen, and I’ll bet they will secretly feel okay if Georgia gets to do the same thing this year.

Do I root against an overrated OSU team and stick with the SEC or do I root against an LSU team that has proven they don’t deserve to be #1 and will have leapfrogged my Dogs?
Maybe UGA can whip Hawaii and then fans can burn down the Superdome thus screwing the BCS and both of the teams (which UGA would beat).

I’m gettin’ sick and tired of all this LSU crap. It’s like for some unknown god damn reason they were just meant to play in the MNC no matter what. They’ve had their fucking chances and they choked them all away. They dont deserve a third chance and its an intellectual travesty to imply that they do. UGA clearly deserves to play in the MNC, period. End of discussion. LSwho lost the last game of their regular season to Arkansas, in a game where they gave up something like 500 points and 5000 yards. Give me a fuckin’ break. People can seriously fucking say that these frauds should have a chance at the title? Its delusional to even imply that. LSU had a decent season. Put em in the Sugar as a cosulation prize but it is shameful as all hell to put them in the MNC. Downright fucking shameful. The Dawgs deserve the shot. Open up your damn eyes, people. The trees are blocking the view of the forest, I guess.

I love the logical gymnastics that Dawg fans are doing to justify earning a trip to the national championship by sitting home and watching another team with an identical record win the championship of their same conference. Yes last week the pollsters thought Georgia was number 4. So what? It’s a poll silly. It’s a popularity contest. Are you just now realizing that people’s opinions shouldn’t factor into crowning the championship?
Any idle team faces the possibility of being leapfrogged. Want to play for a national championship? Then MAKE PLAYS!

Before you make your choice, ask yourself two questions
1) If West Virginia and Missouri had not lost, would you honestly still vote LSU over Georgia? And Kansas? What about Virginia Tech?
2) What is a more damning result to the system we have. Having current #4 Georgia going to the BCS championship game after #1 & 2 lose, without winning a conference championship? Or having a system in which the voters ranki teams obligatorily and arbitrarily until the final week?

As Coach Mark Richt himself just pointed out on Sportscenter, though, winning your conference is not a requirement for the MNC. There is NO rule that you have win your Conference to be in the BCS MNC game….its up to the voters, and I dont see why Georgia shouldn’t be vs tOSU.

Georgia/LSU will throttle tSOU anyway in tOSU’s “rebuilding year”…IS there are rule about punching Jesse Palmer?? Its up to the voters….I would love to see a healthy, peaking LSU team playing for a MNC vs tOSU that hasnt played a down in 3 weeks…..Georgia, though, is the best SEC team that is healthy and my God, dangerous….Georgia gets in….they win by default……..I would hope the voters would put USC/ OU vs Georgia and dump tOSU by principle alone……..
