OPEN THREAD (OF THE DAMNED)

Swindle reports from the SEC Championship press box that Stewart Mandel is a Dapper Dan man. Best of luck to him in his fisticuffs, and to all of you in your end of season drankin’ and gallivantin’.
Swindle: Much thanks to Holly for the open thread opening. We were busy watching Les Miles nutslap ESPN two hours before the biggest game of the year. What happened in that press conference, and what’s allegedly happening in a fitting love triangle to end the Time of Troubles that this season’s been:
–First, the number we’ve gotten on LSU’s counter-offer to Miles is $3.45 million. Michigan’s not even in the same fairway as that offer at ~2.5 million a year.
–The media’s busy parsing the hell out of Miles’ verbiage like he’s a diplomat making a speech at the WTO. They shouldn’t–Miles came out with the body posture of a wrestler addressing the crowd and said ESPN was full of shit. That’s it. Tightly wound, school-of-Woody-Hayes tempermental PR posturing, pure and simple. He could have been brained with a folding chair by Lloyd Carr in the middle of it and it wouldn’t have seemed out of place.
–Sean O’Keefe, chancellor of LSU, looks like a man who bathes in Domaine du Puys and craps solid bars of platinum. Being nicknamed “Pappy” or “Red” and owning several islands devoted solely to his pleasure would NOT surprise us.
UPDATE: CBS and EDSBS, together again for the first time:
Your entire lives have been building to this moment; you just didn’t know it.
Swindle: Verne’s the nicest man you’ll ever meet. Danielson, on the other hand, stabbed us with the sharpened end of a broom handle on the way out. We kid! He was down ton the field doing his job when we were chatting with Verne.
Oh, and stop by and read the liveblog from the Championship Game over at the SN. It’s fact-tastic!
Update: we’re going to do a story on Erik Ainge maturing as a quarterback for tomorrow. We think it’ll happen any day now, and when it does, whoo-whee, look out!

Obviously, I was naive to post a question involving UGA going to the MNC game on a predominately UF site…
Although Rob G makes a very good point. Maybe we should say who we think shold go, and who we think WILL go, if they’re different teams.

All I’m asking is for the title game NOT to include VT. PLEASE, not VT.
OSU v. LSU?? I wouldn’t mind seeing Georgia in the game, but it can’t be Georgia. Or can it…. INMATES ARE RUNNING THE ASYLUM.

Also, fuck you Orson — this weekend proves we need a playoff.

What the hell, I vote for Hawaii if they pull it off with Washington tonight. I still hold that Marshall could have taken it all in ‘99, maybe this could be the mid-major’s revenge.

Has to be LSU.
They won their conference, which Georgia did not. Both have 2 losses.
LSU and VT have 2 losses. LSU smoked VT.
Kansas did not win their conference.
I thought the MNC wouldn’t take any non-conference winners.
So where do more couches burn tonight? Morgantown or Columbus?

Not only does Pitt win, they do it with the Big East officials pulling for WVU. Now how in the hell does this happen? WVUs only TD came after the personal foul on 3rd down. Pitt wrapped up the game twice before being called for mystery holdings. Then no pass interference on WVU after the second mystery hold. Holy crap.

Has to be LSU, assuming OU doesn’t gack this one away. Georgia didn’t win their division, much less their conference; VT got annihilated by said LSU team; USC lost to freakin’ Stanford; Kansas’s best win might be Central Michigan; Hawaii won’t have a win better than Washington.

If anyone can make a defendable claim that UGA deserves in, let’s hear it. It was bullshit when Nebraska got in without winning their conference, but Georgia is taking that to a new level by not winning their own DIVISION. I think that, among 2 loss teams (LSU, VT, OK, USC, ASU, WVa and any others I am missing) & Kansas (1 loss) & undefeated Hawaii………USC is the best team, with Oklahoma next.
That said, you just KNOW that the powers that be will make sure New Orleans gets their hometown Tigers. There reallly should be some way to avoid a team playing a home game for the MNC. Really unfair. Made Texas NC all that much better, that they beat USC in the Rose Bowl.

I’m as big a Georgia homer as they come, but I don’t think LSU deserves it any more than any other two-loss team. They got beaten by two unranked teams, and frankly, they’ve had two shots at getting into the MNC game already this year and dropped the ball on both of them. Give someone else a shot.
And yes, Georgia would be nice, but they’ll be in there next year anyway.

I do not generally complain about officiating. For the most part, I think that those who complain about officiating are wasting their time and sound like “sore losers” (for a back of a better term).
That said, someone needs to conduct an investigation of that officiating crew. Wannstedt looked liked an idiot, stomping around on one foot and complaining about the calls. But he had a point. It would have been criminal if Pitt had not won that game.
