OPEN THREAD (OF THE DAMNED)

Swindle reports from the SEC Championship press box that Stewart Mandel is a Dapper Dan man. Best of luck to him in his fisticuffs, and to all of you in your end of season drankin’ and gallivantin’.
Swindle: Much thanks to Holly for the open thread opening. We were busy watching Les Miles nutslap ESPN two hours before the biggest game of the year. What happened in that press conference, and what’s allegedly happening in a fitting love triangle to end the Time of Troubles that this season’s been:
–First, the number we’ve gotten on LSU’s counter-offer to Miles is $3.45 million. Michigan’s not even in the same fairway as that offer at ~2.5 million a year.
–The media’s busy parsing the hell out of Miles’ verbiage like he’s a diplomat making a speech at the WTO. They shouldn’t–Miles came out with the body posture of a wrestler addressing the crowd and said ESPN was full of shit. That’s it. Tightly wound, school-of-Woody-Hayes tempermental PR posturing, pure and simple. He could have been brained with a folding chair by Lloyd Carr in the middle of it and it wouldn’t have seemed out of place.
–Sean O’Keefe, chancellor of LSU, looks like a man who bathes in Domaine du Puys and craps solid bars of platinum. Being nicknamed “Pappy” or “Red” and owning several islands devoted solely to his pleasure would NOT surprise us.
UPDATE: CBS and EDSBS, together again for the first time:
Your entire lives have been building to this moment; you just didn’t know it.
Swindle: Verne’s the nicest man you’ll ever meet. Danielson, on the other hand, stabbed us with the sharpened end of a broom handle on the way out. We kid! He was down ton the field doing his job when we were chatting with Verne.
Oh, and stop by and read the liveblog from the Championship Game over at the SN. It’s fact-tastic!
Update: we’re going to do a story on Erik Ainge maturing as a quarterback for tomorrow. We think it’ll happen any day now, and when it does, whoo-whee, look out!

The AD is waiting until Monday to place a phone call, per request of LSU’s AD. CBS was saying “why did Michigan even announce the sought permission.” They did not, LSU announced that Bill Martin asked permission.

College coaches are becoming as dispensable as NFL coaches, the only problem is that the NFL has a designated “dead” period between the end of the playoffs and the the draft. College doesn’t have that “dead” period in which schools can conduct their business…the bowls, conference championships, recruiting, and seasons ending at different times all get in the way, hence the reason for everything to be so secretive. Sadly, I only see it getting worse and worse each year.

I just wonder if your “never a dull moment” conference is eroding away the fabric of college football. You basically have 1 slime ball agent bleeding the entire SEC…he’s probably the one behind the scenes telling the coaches to always bring up how tough the SEC is and how fast the athletes are. I mean if all you ever hear from every coach is how tough this conference is and how fast it is, I guess you start to believe it.
First it was your SEC championship game (nothing more than a new revenue stream for the SEC), then the BCS, and now the three ringed circus that is the coaching carousel in the SEC.

Three wins this year by missed / made last second field goals, playing an LSU team with distractions everywhere and an unproven backup QB.

Yo, EDSBS guy;
Do you really believe what that he has agreed. OOhhhh contrar, my friend. You must pay attention.
Bertman leaked a “deal” that he and Bass have negotiated as the best possible LSU counteroffer. Michigan AD has not even met with Les yet. That will happen tomorrow.
Read Bertman’s release, that there is an “agreement” unsigned. That agreement is a contract. Bass went down to LSU Thursday to negotiate the a counter from LSU.
What is surprising is that LSU has ponied up a counter, before Michigan ever offered. Michigan is still looking at candidates in addition to Miles, and Miles is one of three or four candidates who MAY be offered the job. Nothing is a guarentee at this point.
Les’ comments were “I represent myself”. What do you think that means? It means that Bass does not have authority to sign and bind. He has not agreed to a deal, and you, of all people –whom I deem as relatively intelligent — should no that.
Les also said: “absolutely” in reply to the question whether he will coach this team next year.before taking the field. Ok. Well, last time I checked the worst possible bowl that LSU could play in is on January 1, 2008. Isn’t that next year?
So Bertman added some pressure on him by leaking an untrue story. Miles wasn’t happy about Herbrstreit’s report, but that report only added one new piece of info — Tenuta. Herbie merely said that Miles will take the job” barring something unforseen. That’s been reported since the third or fourth week of the season.
Bottom line, Les’ has not, and will not sign a contract with LSU until Michigan has hired its coach, whether it be him, or someone else. I respect what he said, b/c as he said before the game, his team was distracted. He is doing/did what he though necessary to get his team ready to play.
When this turns out with him at Michigan, in a week and a half to two weeks, Skip Bertman is going to look like the weasel he is.

As a Dawg fan, I can honestly say that I supported Nebraska in 2001. Not Okalahoma in 2003, but there was a clearly better ‘resume’ that year. In 2001 it was a cluster, and there is no way to convince me that Oregon (weak schedule, one loss) or Colorado (b12 champ, beat Nebraska, but two losses) ‘deserved’ it over Nebraska. Sometimes the season is just a mess, and if you have to pick two teams to fight it out then the mess will be reflected in your choice.
I’m not saying Georgia is clearly the team that does deserve it, just that holding them out for not winning the SEC is a bogus reason. Tom already pointed out the geographical oddity of it all. Why not just pretend it’s 1988 and there was a three way tie for the SEC?
What I do know is this: last week the poll voters in all major polls said that Georgia was the #4 team in the country. They had them ranked higher than any other SEC team, and higher than other teams playing for conf champs, knowing full well that the Dawgs would not be in the conf champ game. Nothing has changed about any of that to make people think that LSU suddenly became ‘better’ than Georgia. Crap, the LSU AD was ROOTING for Tennessee the last three weeks. Everybody knows that LSU didn’t want to play Georgia today in that game.
Georgia was supposedly #4 last week and now two teams ahead of them have lost. Put them #2. I’m not asking for them to jump ahead of the two loss pack all of a sudden. They’ve been the highest ranked two-loss team for a month. This year, this crazy year, a 2 loss team is getting into the game. It’s crazy, nobody expected it, but it is happening. All the teams other people are arguing for also have 2 losses. It feels icky, but there is no way around it. But Georgia has been king of that particular hill, and they have done nothing to deserve to drop. They are universally recognized as one of the best teams at this moment (along with USC).
Finally, I pulled for the Gators last season to do the SEC proud and beat the Buckeyes, and I relished it when they did so. The proprietors of this blog are kind gentlemen, and I’ll bet they will secretly feel okay if Georgia gets to do the same thing this year.

People can seriously fucking say that these frauds should have a chance at the title? Its delusional to even imply that. LSU had a decent season. I sure hope you were using the same logic you are using this year last year. Teams sliding up when not losing and all that.

Georgia/LSU will throttle tSOU anyway in tOSU’s “rebuilding year”…IS there are rule about punching Jesse Palmer?? Its up to the voters….I would love to see a healthy, peaking LSU team playing for a MNC vs tOSU that hasnt played a down in 3 weeks…..Georgia, though, is the best SEC team that is healthy and my God, dangerous….Georgia gets in….they win by default……..I would hope the voters would put USC/ OU vs Georgia and dump tOSU by principle alone……..

My point – a playoff won’t make the regular season less exciting. It will just make the post-season more exciting. (Oh, and they could keep ALL of the bowls, even the Weed Eater Bowl … but that’s a much longer post)

Duke of C-U says:
Per BCS rules, it seems as though Sugar has to consent to SEC team being chosen by the Rose… maybe the Illini make it now? I can’t see the Sugar settling for a Hawaii/Illini v. KU/MU game…
If a bowl loses a host team to the NCG, then such bowl shall select a replacement team from among the automatic-qualifying teams and the at-large teams before any other selections are made. If two bowls lose host teams to the NCG, each bowl will get a replacement pick before any other selections are made. In such case, the bowl losing the No. 1 team gets the first replacement pick, and the bowl losing the No. 2 team gets the second replacement pick. If the Rose Bowl loses both the Big Ten and Pac-10 champions to the NCG, it will receive two replacement picks.
A bowl choosing a replacement team may not select any of the following:
A.A team in the NCG;
B.The host team for another BCS Bowl;
C. When two bowls lose host teams, then the bowl losing the number one team may not select a replacement team from the same Conference as the number two team, unless the bowl losing the number two team consents.

#492 (Duke of CU): Actually, it means Illinois is almost certainly in the Rose Bowl. OSU is moving up to the title game (probably as BCS #1), so the Rose Bowl gets first pick. And they will take a Big Ten team if available (and with the Tennessee and BC losses, UI will be eligible).
stapler: You can’t count to two?
LSU lost damn close games twice against teams which are either ranked now or close to it. Georgia got beaten soundly by one ranked team and lost another game to a 6-6 team. The quality of wins is about the same (Georgia beat Florida and Auburn by bigger margins than LSU did, but LSU also has the evisceration of VT on its resume). The only plausible argument for Georgia over LSU is when they lost, and I don’t think that deserves anywhere near as much consideration as who they lost to and who they beat.
And Hawaii isn’t headed anywhere right now, it appears. They’re getting destroyed by Washington, 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

UGA has won convincingly against Auburn, Florida, and Kentucky in the past 5 weeks. LSU had an insanely big break to win against Auburn, several huge breaks to win against UF, and lost to Kentucky.

Its simply a damn shame that its all coming down to ESPN commentators quibbling about who is “more deserving”. at least we wont have to listen to Kirk Douchestreet lobbying for the Big Ten this year. When it comes down to it, none of the teams in the discussion is more deserving than the other. LSU is ranked low because they lost to Arkansas and Kentucky (4-4 and 3-5 in conference respectively). UGA is ranked high, but didn’t win their conference. Kansas lost to the only “good” team they played all year. Oklahoma lost to Colorado (whom FSU killed) and Texas Tech (High School offense). Ohio State sucks (see Glendale, AZ among numerous other arguments). Va Tech got killed by LSU and choked against Matt Ryan. USC lost to Stanford (at home). Mizzou is perhaps the most deserving team of the bunch (just bear with me here). Their two loses are both to Oklahoma, and although they suffer from the same flaw as Georgia (no conf championship) and Kansas (weak schedule), they have as strong an argument as anyone mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is all academic. There will be lots of face saving, lobbying, buck-passing, and calls for change that will, in the end, amount to all sound and fury signifying nothing.

They might not be one of the best two teams in the country (and I know all SEC/USC fans just like to hate on the Buckeyes, or should I say “Suckeyes”?) but got damn every other team looks kinda undeserving too.

If there was a one-loss team (aside from Kansas, whose best win just might be Central Michigan) to take their place, I would absolutely argue for them ahead of LSU. But how you lose should matter – not as much as how often you lose, who you lose to, who you beat, etc., but it should count for something. Are you seriously telling me that all else (timing of losses, opponent, location, and everything) being equal, a pair of 3OT losses isn’t better than losing once by 6 in regulation and once by 21?

Exactly. That’s the situation Georgia was in when they played WVU in the Sugar Bowl in ‘05. Everyone talked the entire off season about how humiliating it was to lose to a “Big Least” team.
Of course, in hindsight, they turned out to be a lot better than everyone thought at the time.
It’s just going to suck if UGA has to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl this time. Not that it wouldn’t be great to go to the Sugar Bowl, but as you say there would be nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Well I’ll be danged. WWL puts up an instant poll on their website and offer the possibility of a 6 team playoff (my choice). I thought I was the only one who thought of that. give top 2 byes and have #5 play at #4 and #6 at #3. That way every single regular season game is going to have meaning, even if both losers are still going to get in the playoffs.
Much as I like the Dawgs, I’m afraid LSU or OU have better championship resumes by virtue of winning their title game. For that matter, U$Cs midseason struggles are very much indentifiable as being due to injury, so I’d actually be inclined to vote them #2 were I a poll voter. Which I’m thankfully not.

Both OSU and LSU have their flaws. At full strength, no injuries, playing their best game all season, LSU trounces the Buckeyes in front of a partisan LSU crowd, and I don’t have much of a problem admitting that. Problem is, they’ve got injuries all over the place, they haven’t played a solid game across the board since Va Tech, and they have two QBs who get rattled easily. Dorsey’s a beast, but he’ll probably still be hobbled, and this defense is still giving up yards in bunches to teams it should be shutting down and out (see Ole Miss and yes, Arkansas). LSU hasn’t faced a good defense since they eeked it out against Auburn, and hasn’t played a good, consistent offense since they outlasted Florida. They’re a good team, with the potential to be a truly great team. I just haven’t seen anything out of them recently that tells me they would blast Ohio State. With Florida last year, I at least knew Chris Leak was pretty good when he wasn’t pressured, and that the defense was a killer OSU would have a tough time moving the ball against. When we were blown out, I wasn’t in a total state of shock like most of Buckeye nation. I knew it could have happened, but didn’t think it would. I don’t get that vibe at all for this LSU team.
I just know I haven’t seen this level of cockiness from any fanbase since, well, OSU’s last year before the title game.

Also, Pete Carroll and the Trojans don’t duck competition – you can never take that away from them. But, this year, their scedule turned out weaker than expected. Nebraska sucks, Cal really does suck, UCLA pretty much sucks.

Everyone else did have a shot. Just because they didn’t actually occupy a top spot doesn’t mean that, had they not also lost two games, they wouldn’t have ended up there. Every time one of these top teams lost they opened the door for others. Then the other teams lost too and fell.

Yes, but at the same time the BCS apologists say that the very reason the BCS is great is because “every game counts” and the “regular season is a defacto playoff.” If that’s the case, then how come Hawaii can run the table and still be unsure as to whether they’ll even get into one of the Big 4 BCS bowls. let alone ever have a sniff of the BCSCG? I know they didn’t play anybody, but what are they supposed to do? The PAC 10 is not going to take them, so the best they could hope for would be a move to the MWC, which at this point would be a lateral move at best. As for the non-conference schedule, it’s not like this is NCAA08 for the xbox 360. They can’t just magically adjust their schedule to include three preseason top 25 teams. Besides that, non-conference games are made years ahead of time. Hell, UF already has nonconference games lined up for 2012! In fact, if I’m not mistaken, when Hawaii put UW on the schedule, it was a UW team that had Reggie Williams, Tuiasosopo, Larry Tripplett, etc. It’s not their fault that Rick Neuheisel managed to run the Huskies into the ground before the game got played.
Look, don’t get me wrong. If I had to pick the two best teams in the country, Hawaii wouldn’t be one of them. But then again, neither would tOSU. All I’m saying is that no matter how many bandaids they put on the BCS each offseason to try to tweak the formula it won’t matter; the system will always be flawed due to the fact that nearly half of the NCAA has literally zero chance of playing for the MNC, and nothing short of a playoff will fix things.
Fwiw though, if I did have to pick two teams for the championship, I’d pick tOSU and UGa, if for no other reason than the thought of the suckeyes getting trampled by the third best team in the SEC puts a giant smile on my face.

There are zero obvious choices for the BCS crystal bowl game.
There are five teams with legitimate claims to get into the mythical, or comical by now, national championship game, and here they are in my not so humble opinion:
USC, Pac 10 champ
LSU, SEC champ (sorry UGA)
OSU, Big 10 champ
Va Tech, ACC champ
Okies, Big 12 champ (sorry Kansas)
All have two losses, except theOSU. But theOSU needs some sort of penalty for pastying up its schedule toooooooooo much this year, so I would not give them too much credit for just having one loss.
There will be arguing and gnashing of teeth about this BCS situation for years.
My choice: LSU and USC – two toughest teams in toughest conferences, with unfinished business from a few years ago still festering and pestering its fan bases.
Also, note USC’s recent history:
- sixth straight BCS game,
- winning its sixth straight Pac-10 title,
- posting its sixth straight season of 10 or more wins.

LSU barely beat the team that lost to the #7 team in the Pac 10. No way LSU deserves a shot in the title game.
Talk out of both sides of your mouth… LSU beat UT while playing their SECOND STRING QB, who ended up playing half the game with a throwing hand injury. LSU is still a team without their QB. Oregon – like ALL spread teams – is a joke once the QB gets hurt (and the QB will get hurt in the spread).
LSU is the best team this year – top to bottom – because they are so deep. Remember, they had the #1 on their chest for most of the season, so they got every teams best shot, so they should get the spot based upon that alone. I mean, after all, the USC fans taught me that a few years ago.

Playoffs exist to determine from a group of deserving teams a champion. All we have this year are undeserving teams. (I actually kinda feel bad for 95 Nebraska, the 01 Canes, and the 05 Longhorns because they have to share the same title of “national champs” with one of these fricken teams this year) So if your team isn’t picked in the top two, you have not right to complain because everything was in that team’s power to prevent that situtation.
Don’t you see is that the lack of playoffs is what makes college football great? Don’t lose, or you will get what is in the mystery box, and you may not like it. (Hawaii, just sit there and look pretty, not sure what to do with you yet, but schedule only away games next time to get tougher opponents)

Are you new to college football or something? Teams are scared to death to play Hawaii and don’t want to schedule them. Every major power is scared of being on the receiving end of a Michigan/App. State debacle. The BCS is scared as all hell of teams like Boise, Utah, Hawaii, etc. And if you think lack of closure at the end of football seasons is what makes CFB great, well, that is actually too stupid to warrant a response.

LSU handled the pressure plenty well enough against Florida, Auburn and Alabama and stopped the run well enough against (admittedly less than an overwhelming running attack) Tennesee. It did this without Dorsey and a with hobbled Beckwith. It also did this with a second string QB who could not throw for most of the second half (as has been stated in many comments above).
The Dawgs are playing well and If there were a ployoff I’d take Georgia over LSU right now but healthier LSU might be a better team a month from now and given the SEC championship they are at least as deserving of the MNCCG nod. In any case you had your chances and blew them, just like everyone else. The notion that the Dawgs are a clear choice over LSU is absurd.

You talk about schedules, and schools, and all that BS, and you’re missing the big picture. There are 85 college kids that gave their hearts and souls to their football team to live the dream, and they beat all comers. These kids were overlooked by the big boys, and those same big boys then refused to schedule them because they knew they might lose the football game. But these 85 kids at a STATE SCHOOL had a perfect regular season in a year when every other team in the nation had at least 1 loss.
Teams should be arguing about which Goliath is going to try to slay David.
And when Hawaii doesn’t go to the MNC game, I hope the mid majors go back to the US Congress and get this abolished. A State School has just been told that it can’t play for the prize, and all the prestige, respect, and money that comes with that. Taxpayer dollars cannot and should not be used to support this type of discrimination. It is WRONG.

A look at Ohio State’s SOS in comparison with certain others:
According to Sagarin, Ohio State’s schedule is ranked 60th and Hawaii’s is ranked 137th – lower than some D-1AA teams.
From CBS Sportsline, AKA SEC homer country, here are their SOS rankings for some notable teams:
Ohio State: 43rd
LSU: 26th
Missouri: 3rd (!)
Hawaii: 118th
Oklahoma: 44th
USC: 73rd
Georgia: 21st
WVU: 42nd
So all comparisons of Hawaii’s schedule to tOSU’s can stop now. You’re going more than a little overboard. As you can see, tOSU’s SOS is significantly weaker than only LSU, Georgia and Missouri according to none other than the bright minds at your favorite channel, CBS.

For all those who were clamoring about USC and bashing Ohio State’s schedule…USC beat a total of 2 teams with winning records, Ohio State beat 6. USC lost twice, once to a team with a losing record, Ohio State lost once to a 9-3 Illinois team.
As to the conference argument, Notre Dame went 2-1 against the Pac 10 and 0-4 against the Big 10.
==========
I am shocked that LSU as able to leap frog every one in 1 week; voters basically said that the 7 point win over 9-3 Tenn was better than OU’s 21 point domination of #1 11-1 Mizzu.
I think the Texas Tech and Arkansas losses wash each other out, leaving OU’s loss to CU be perceived as worse than LSU’s OT loss to Kentucky. Personally, I would consider those games a wash as well. Then I would look at who played better in their last game. No one could honestly say that LSU played better than OU this weekend.

Stoops, on the other hand, really did lobby hard. And although I think OU is (1) playing great, (2) would be competitive and maybe even win the NC, they also shot themselves in the foot. That said, their SOS is higher than USC’s and they had to beat a good Missouri team twice.

And no, Hawaii would not kill OSU. If not for a completely bullshit illegal forward pass call, they might not even have beaten Washington. You need to go to the Sugar Bowl and break 100 points. It won’t be hard because Hawaii sucks. Once you do that, you are a co-national champion. Sure, people will say it doesn’t really count like USC’s in 2004 or Michigan’s in 1997, but they’re just jealous, that’s all.

@738 Trojanrick. You’ve completely misinterpreted my post. I am a Trojan fan. I wasn’t complaining. (VT, Auburn, Nebraska, Arkansas, ND, in the past few years just to name a few, and the examples you gave for the future, including Ohio State for the next two years).
I was just pointing out that this year, a non-conference schedule that would normally be strong (Nebraska, Notre Dame), and a portion of the conference schedule that looked great on paper earlier in the season, turned out to be not as strong as expected. And, therefore, USC’s argument for a national championship is weakened. It’s not that the Trojans have no argument, but it’s not as strong as if Nebraska would have stayed in the top 20, ND was up to its normal standards, and teams like Cal and UCLA didn’t go from Top 10 to mediocre.

tOSU: Youngstown St., Akron, Washington, Kent State

Mich: Appy State (L), Oregon (L), Notre Dame, Eastern Mich.
Illinois: Missouri (L), West. Ill, Syracuse, Ball State

Iowa: Northern Ill, Syracuse, Iowa State (L!), West. Mich.

You can cut this a couple of ways, given that we’re talking about what SHOULD happen vs. what will actually happen in terms of getting two teams together for a one game playoff.
1) You can make the old claim that if you don’t win your conference championship, you need not apply. In that case, it’s between LSU and VPI as to who gets to play tOSU. LSU beat VPI……like a drum. I don’t care if it was in July. That’s the nice thing about college futbaw. Every game matters. Sure, late games count more, but they didn’t play late. They played, and the result was unequivocal. In this case, LSU deserves the shot. I don’t get what Tech’s case is at all.
2) If you want to ignore conference championships, then UGA could make the claim that, after tOSU, they were next in line and were ahead of LSU. I don’t particularly subscribe to this one, but at least it’s a case.
So, tOSU is a given and UGA and LSU can make their cases. Tech has no case. Hawaii doesn’t have a case either other than being undefeated. I realized that the Hawaii argument goes something like “blah blah blah undefeated, blah blah blah 2006 Boise State, blah blah blah just as good, blah blah blah unfair, blah blah blah top 10 teams won’t play us.” but here schedule makes a HUGE difference. They had to gear up for Boise State and a bad Pac-10 team and that’s about it. BCS bowl? Sure, have fun and I’ll be pulling for you to pull of the stunning upset. Championship game? Please apply when everyone who plays a much tougher schedule has 3 losses and then we’ll see.

Pitt Fan says:
Well, good for Pitt. That was neat to watch.
The two best teams, IMO, are Hawaii and Kansas. Hawaii is UNDEFEATED; they beat Boise State (the defending Fiesta Bowl Champions) and a solid BYU team and a University of Washington team that beat Standford, which beat USC. So Hawaii has an OK tree of scheduling, and is the best of the western group of teams.
Kansas and Oklahoma had a common opponent in a common stadium: on the road against Colorado. Kansas won, Oklahoma lost. So Kansas is the best of the big 12 teams.
LSU lost to a Kentucky team which lost to a Mississippi State which lost toa West Virginia team that lost to Pitt. So by the logic that says that Kansas shouldn’t get a shot in the championship game because of who they lost to, then Pitt deserves a shot at the national title!? (Of course not). Still, losing to a team that is within three degrees of losing to Pitt is bad, and should be a disqualification.
We move on to Georgia: they lost to a South Carolina team that beat the Mississippi State team that beat the Kentucky team that LSU lost to.
LSU is probably *slightly* better than Georgia. But Pitt is still within a 3rd degree of teams they have lost to. They don’t deserve a chance at the championship game.
We discount West Virginia because they lost to Pitt–automatic disqualification. And we move on to Ohio State. First, they were hardly overwhelming in their victory over a Michigan team that lost to Appalacian Statae. And they lost to an Illinois team that lost to a Michigan team that lost to Appalachian State AND lost to an Iowa team that lost to Western Michigan! Also, that Iowa team lost to an Indiana team that lost to Duke that lost to NOTRE DAME! (Side note: USC lost to a Stanford team that lost to NOTRE DAME too). If losses Notre Dame, Appalachian State and Western Michigan are within 3 degrees of your schedule, you are not worthy of the national championship.
Hawaii is the best team in the country. They should play for the national championship against the other best team in the country–Kansas., The rest of the “powerhouses” have losses to the “poor houses” either on or within 3 degrees of their schedule. Kansas vs. Hawaii in New Orleans!

Now that I see the polls have LSU #2, I guess the conference championship game helped the SEC again. So quit the bitching about the extra game, it has benefited the winner 2 years in a row. UGA got hosed. If they had played LSU yesterday, I am quite confidant that they would have fared better than Tennessee, meaning that LSU would be playing on New Years Day in a lesser bowl. I hope UGA gets the Rose Bowl, but we won’t know until tonight. BTW, the Big Ten can’t have a conference championship because they need 12 teams. Since we have one more than the name implies already, one more is not going to happen. But our conference championship game happened naturally on November 17 when tOSU beat Michigan.
Look for Les Miles to emerge from his smoke screen to talk to UM and accept the job if offered on Monday.
The sweetest part of being #1 is knowing how much it pisses off the detractors. If you feel we don’t belong, I suggest you contact a bookie and bet all you can. If you are right, you will be rich. If that’s “not much better”, I don’t know what it would take for a team to have a much better resume than Hawaii’s.
Stapler: Are you seriously arguing that a loss to the SEC East champion … should make you the SEC champ? There aren’t words to describe that kind of idiocy. Why’s tOSU railed against? Remember the wet sloppy kisses the Big 11 got last year from the media? Remember the destroyment they got from Florida? Remember all those big OOC games they played this year? Remember all those big conference games last year? Playing nothing but little brother schools in Ohio does not lead to national respect, and the putrescence of the Big 11 makes it looks like you’re skating in with minimal effort.
As a Nebraska fan, I remember the resentment Nebraska’d get in the 80’s and early 90’s about being a paper tiger as they couldn’t win the big one.
1987, lost to final #2 FSU and #3 OU
1988, lost to NC runner up Miami
1990, lost to co-NCs Colorado and Georgia Tech (eat that, UGa fan!)
1991, lost to co-NC’s Washington and Miami
1993, lost to NC FSU
You will be resented for repeatedly winning big games. Some people still think OSU got over on Miami as the PI call was… iffy, and that factors into it. All the jokes about Notre Dame and bowls I’ve heard before.
Of course, you will also be resented when you do nothing but kick ass. But that’s a way better kind of resentment.

Spartan Dan: See the Big10 OOC schedule matrix above.
I have no idea how good the Big 10 really is, because you all only play each other, the MAC, and Notre Dame, and local 1AA schools.
Based on the very limited data available from non-Big 10/MAC/ND/1AA sources, the conference is:
5-4 in OOC against BCS conferences.
Wins: Washington State, Washington, Pitt, Syracuse (2X)
Losses: Oregon, Missouri, Dook, Iowa State
tOSU beat UW more convincingly on the road than Hawaii did at home. I’d be willing to buy tOSU as being a little bit better than Hawaii.
But don’t try and tell me that there are seven teams in your league better than Boise. That’s crap. Not in a league where Iowa loses to Iowa State and NW loses to Dook.
Bottom line is that Hawaii is undefeated and everyone else has at least 2 losses. Their schedule stinks, but so does tOSU’s. Again, I think there is no real data showing that the Big 10 is really any good other than the shared historical memory of the Big 10 once being a major conference.
Maybe if MSU had’nt chickened out of a game in the islands Hawaii would have one loss and we wouldn’t be having this talk right now.

Lets say you have two one loss teams. One teams only loss comes from the other one loss team. The other one loss team’s one loss comes from a below average team. Both teams have one loss, but objectively, one team lost to a good team and the other lost to a bad team. Yes, head to head does look good but it too discounts the fact that the other team lost to a bad team. Therefore, an argument can be made that some tiebreakers do have it backward.

I know that it seems rather set in stone at this point, with tOSU and LSU, but everyone needs to remember the super fun factor here: The Harris Poll. With Oklahoma doing rather well in the computer ratings (#1 in the Saragin), they could leap over tOSU/LSU if they get a #1 in the Harris. Personally, I think an OU LSU matchup (complete with all the comparisons to the last really funked up BCS season that, in the end, gave us OU and LSU) would be much closer to the top two teams. WIthin the grouping of OU/LSU/tOSU/USC/VaTech/UGA, I think tOSU (with the only argument being one loss rather than two, but then look at the sched) and UGA have the short end of the stick when it comes to ammo to argue with.

Selection of BCS teams is looking like this:
1. NCG – #1 in the poll (looking like OSU)

4. Sugar Bowl/Fiesta Bowl (if LSU or Oklahoma respectively is #2, otherwise this pick gets skipped)
5. Orange Bowl
6. Fiesta Bowl
7. Sugar Bowl
Mind you, one of these picks has to be West Virginia and one may have to be Hawaii.

LSU – Sugar (unless they get #2)
Oklahoma – Fiesta (unless they get #2)

In order for the Rose to select Georgia, the Sugar’s going to have to release Georgia to the Rose in order for them to select us. If you look at selection procedures, a team that picks an at-large member and is replacing the #1 team needs consent from the bowl that lost the #2 team (LSU in the Sugar) to select a team from the same conference (in this case, Georgia).
In short, there’s pretty much no chance the Sugar releases Gerogia in that instance. I wouldn’t see why they would, but maybe it does happen.

My beloved Trojans? They are not playing the best football in America right now; their defense is. The offense is 15th-20th (except for the monster know as Fred Davis).
