I just read this on Oct 28th, 2009. So totally, outstandingly cool and clean and fresh and full of
whispery mysteriousness that I had to say thank you. Great writing. Like heady wine, the kind
that makes your head suddenly get all electrically sensitive and your cheeks hurt.

A lovely experience to be reading it and responding here in 2009. Something about stopping by
when everybody has read it and gone, like sitting in a stadium many hours after the game,
the crowds gone, and silence echoing in the halls is just very satisfying in a quiet, ghostly, lonely way.

I’m going to make a habit of it. It’s like stepping back in time – it’s suddenly 2007 and Dennis
Dixon’s injury still has me reeling in pain and none of the events of 2008 and 2009 have
happened yet. Finding stuff to read that makes your brain buzz with pleasure is rare enough
that I’ll take it where I get it, but prowling the ghosts of Internet corridors past is proving to have
unexpected, pleasurable upsides.

For everyone bashing Jax, where the hell do the rest of you live? There’s a lot of shitholes in this country, but I can’t imagine every single one of you Jax bashers doesn’t possibly live in one as well.

I love how one visit for a day or two can sum up a whole town just like that for some of you.
I know the simpleminded rhetoric will be “Well I only need that much time to figure out it sucked”, but Jacksonville has a lot of offer its just not always evident on the outside, you have to dig a little. It might not be that special as a whole, but it has its awesome spots if you know where to look, and know what you enjoy.

Going down to the damn Landing and then a considerably empty stadium afterwards to watch a boring ass ACC game doesn’t sum up the whole town. And who the fuck uses a travel package to stay at the Parkview Inn? Do a little damn research for christ sakes into where you’re staying in a foreign town.

Eighty-some comments about how crummy Jacksonville is and the only posters with any balls are the ones from Jax. Where do the rest of you asshats call “home”? Jax is a great place to live. That the city doesn’t provide what a bunch of filthy, low rent tourists are looking for is what makes J’ville special. You slobs blow into town to watch a football game, sleep ten to a room, walk around with $40 in your wallet, and act indignant that prostitutes and titty bars are so hard to find. You ‘wads couldn’t find your own ass with both hands and a flashlight. The Landing Sucks? Then don’t go there. It was only put there to keep scum like you from venturing out into nice parts of town where you do not belong, and where cops DO routinely taze asswipes like yourselves. Bashing Jax is your prerogative, but ‘fess up pillowbiters. You have Jax envy and would love to live here if not for the excessive one-way drop off fees imposed by U-Haul. So you settle for visiting Jax once every year or two, and then just pace up and down Bay Street, with your 40 bucks burning a hole in your pocket, wondering why Jax is such a dead town. Morons.

As a Citadel graduate, the Charleston idea is an excellent one. During my time there in the 80’s, the 1-AA championship game was held there for a couple of years. I haven’t lived there for a while, but I happened to be there this week and it is still a great place to be.

Johnson Hagood Stadium is currently under renovation. There was discussion of building a larger stadium across the street to accomodate a bowl game or another similar event (the ACC Championship game was mentioned).

The confederate flag postseason ban was quietly lifted a few years ago. NCAA regional baseball games are regularly played in the state now. I don’t believe that bowl games are considered “postseason” games by the NCAA, as there is no recognzied playoff system in 1-A.

The reason that the Palmetto Bowl was scrapped was due to $$$. ESPN would not give a long-term commitment and the school had trouble convincing the state to provide $$ toward a stadium that might only have a bowl game for a few years.

Charleston is a great city and a great place for any sporting event.

i spent a year living in working in riverside getting so stoned an shitdrunk and riding bikes all around at night doing whatever. i was never once approached by a cop, despite seeing them every fifteen minutes. jacksonville is somewhere you can go to disappear

Edsall, unfortunately you are pipe dreaming. Rutgers is not relevant, they got back in their Pumpkin Carriage this year after being handled by 10 at home to Maryland. With the exception of West Virginia, everybody in the Big East football conference is on about the level of Maryland or below. Pitt, Syracuse, and Louisville are all god awful. Rutgers, UConn, South Florida (whom WVU lost to), and Cincinnati are all average to below average at best, none would have a shot to win any other BCS conference. And that brings us to WVU, nobody in the country believes they are better than Oklahoma, USC, LSU, Florida, Georgia or even Virginia Tech. The best thing WVU ever did was stop playing Virginia Tech every year, the team that bent them over with relative ease in Morgantown in 2005. WVU has played exactly one team that was ranked in the top 20 this year at the time they played them, and now they lost. They beat ZERO top 20 teams. VT fans should be slapping themselves for leaving the Big East now, considering they could have possibly played for 3 national titles in a row.

This town is so absurdly lame and second tier it really makes me wonder who in the ACC chose it. Having been to Charlotte, I woule not normally suggest returning there, but from what I have seen thus far, Charlotte is far more cosmopolitan than Jacksonville. I think the ACC championship and the basketball tournament should stick with real cities like Boston, DC, Atlanta, Miami, etc. Second-tier cities should be ruled out prima facia.

ahhh. fuck all that shit. 30 minutes to get to anywhere? stop living on the southside. ortega, avondale, riverside, downtown, springfield, san marco. the urban neighborhoods rock in jax. it’s just that anyone over 30 or with a DMB tshirt lives near the TGIFridays on southside blvd. check out TSI, the pearl, chew, eclipse, shanty town, burrito gallery, opaq, starlite, wallstreet, biscottis, casbah, london bridge, inertia records, or any of the other independent places in the urban core for some cool stuff. you just won’t find it at the beach or any of the outer neighborhoods.

#71, lower crime rate than our nation’s capitol? You’re really trying to show how good the crime rate is in Jacksonville by comparing it to the world’s largest crack house? Jacksonville is just big enough to not be small town and just small enough not to be a big city. I guess if you like that sort of thing then good for you, but in my opinion, that’s the worst of both worlds. I’d rather live in a proper small town.

Anyone not from Jacksonville think it’s a great place to live? Retarded kids don’t know they’re retarded. Just like Jacksonville natives don’t see anything wrong with the city. I guess they just don’t know any better.
